News: Park View Students Support Red, White and Food Event

Sterling (Sept. 29, 2010) - Park View High School students gave up part of their lunch periods throughout the day on Sept. 10th, to stand in long lines formed to help feed the area’s hungry.
Announcements were made leading up to the Red, White and Food event, seeking student volunteers who carefully bagged healthy snacks in the Park View cafeteria to send to the D.C Central Kitchen.


This was the second year for the operation of the Red, White & Food project for which the entire student population pitched in to help out. Park View faculty members and Extra Mile Club sponsors Elizabeth Driggers and Magi Shepley, both special education teachers, helped launch the program again this year.

The Red, White & Food donation project was initiated by Park View senior Christine Ruiz and coordinated by Extra Mile Club officers Rachel Ward and Clara Parker.

“Local business support increased dramatically this year,” said Driggers. “Whole Foods; Sterling Wegmans, Sterling Safeway Store, Sterling West Target, Sterling Buffalo Wing Factory, and Park View High School families donated all of the food and supplies to support the students’ volunteer efforts.”

The D.C Central Kitchen operates in Northwest Washington in conjunction with one of the country's largest homeless shelters.
