| All About the Hardware: Loudoun County captures Dulles District regular season and tournament golf titles for the second straight year. |

Ashburn (Sept. 21, 2010) – There were no surprises at the awards podium Tuesday for the AA Dulles District golf tournament at the 1757 Club as Loudoun County captured its third straight title and Raider senior Brantley Kushner defended his individual title.
For the second straight year, however, there was a bit of a surprise in the runner-up spot as Freedom – after a 4-4 district dual campaign and fifth and third place district mini tournament finishes – claimed second to qualify for the Region II tournament which the Eagles happen to host in two weeks at the South Riding Club.
The top story, however, was all about Loudoun County for the third straight year and like last year, when the Raiders won by 18 strokes, it wasn’t close this year as County scored 311 on the tough course to finish 17 ahead of Freedom at 328.
“It’s getting to be a habit, but a good habit,” said Loudoun County coach John Laycock.
Kushner, a runner-up as a sophomore and champion his junior year, came into Tuesday with a little bit of rust after taking some time off with a shoulder injury but he was able to fire a 72, mostly by keeping his driver safely in his bag on the tight course that features plenty of opportunities to get your golf ball wet.
“I hit driver twice all day, it’s a short course but you can’t hit driver a lot, there are a lot of water hazards,” said Kushner.
Laycock said that Kushner has been the squad’s consistently low scorer during their 3-year run.
“Brantley has consistently been our best player for the last three years and that came through today,” said Laycock. “It adds a lot of pressure when you are defending individual champion, which he was, and he obviously responded to that. He tweaked his shoulder a couple of weeks ago … he’s a competitor and he knew when he wanted to be ready.”
Runner-up to Kushner was Freedom senior Jason Scrivo in a story of redemption. Last season the Eagles and Scrivo hosted the Dulles District tournament and they were a strong favorite to qualify for regionals but the Eagles finished six strokes behind Potomac Falls and Briar Woods in fourth place and Scrivo himself had a nightmare of a finish.
“Last year I shot 83 and I had a 10 on No. 16 … that was devastating,” said Scrivo. “This year I came back and was successful.”
Scrivo trotted his driver out six times and shot 75, some eight strokes better than his only other 18-hole round at 1757, and that was enough to help the Eagles distance themselves from a bevy of pursers including Dominion (333), Park View (333), Briar Woods (337) and Tuscarora (338).
Qualifying for regionals in addition to the Loudoun County and Freedom squads were a pair of athletes from Tuscaorra (Alec Gard who shot 76 for third, and Phillip Corcoran with an 80), Briar Woods (Adam Ochs who shot 77 to tie for fourth with County’s Michael Linville, and Nick Vazzana) and Dominion (Richard Boudreau who shot 78 for sixth and Shelby Shote with an 80).
For Ochs, Shote and Vazzana, it will be a return trip to regionals.
Now Loudoun County will attempt to qualify for the AA state tournament with a top two finish at the Region II tournament, which the Raiders won in 2008 and took runner-up in 2009.
“We have six guys that can go low,” said Kushner. “It is all mental for us. We have played good all year but we have to stay strong with our golf swings and mentally just play good.”
