Volleyball Notebook: Woodgrove Wins First Match in School History; Tuscarora Wins First Ever District Contest in 5-Game Thriller; Broad Run Edges Freedom and More!

(Sept. 24, 2010) - It was a wild week of volleyball in Loudoun with so many great story lines. Woodgrove High School, for starters, defeated Millbrook in five on Wednesday for the school's first ever victory.

The Wolverines almost achieved that feat the night before but it was Tuscarora taking a first as the Huskies won their first ever Dulles District match in a 5-game thriller between the county's two newest high schools.

Broad Run, which fell to Loudoun County on Tuesday, put an end to Freedom's winning streak on Thursday and claimed sole possession of the second spot in the Dulles District in a -- naturally -- five-game thriller.

Heritage, on the same day they got some ink from the WashPost, fell to Fairfax but the Pride bounced back against Oakton on Thursday. Loudoun Valley meanwhile survived two 5-game (thrillers!) to come away with wins over Langley and Robinson.

And Stone Bridge ... just keeps winning.

Thurs. Sept. 23
Briar Woods def. Tuscarora, 24-26, 25-10, 25-17, 25-15
The Skinny: Natalie Deffer led the Falcons with 19 service points, and Jazmeen Chinn and Keandra McCardell both had 10 kills each. Hanna Reed added 11 digs on defense for BWoods and McCardell had three solo blocks.

Broad Run def. Freedom, 25-21, 22-25, 25-22, 24-26, 15-7
The Skinny: The Spartans put an end to the Falcons winning streak in the battle for second place in the Dulles District.

Loudoun County def. Dominion, 25-14, 25-12, 25-6
The Skinny: Loudoun County improved to 9-1 (7-0) on the season as they reach the halfway point of the regular season. The Raiders were led by Colleen Bowlds (23 assists, 16 points, 7 digs, 2 aces), Jenna Strange (8 kills, 7 digs, 6 points, 2 aces), Danielle Cullen (7 kills, 6 points, 4 digs), Taylor Huewe (4 kills, 1 block), Katrina Kirby (2 kills, 2 blocks), Gabby Serafin (10 digs, 9 points), Kathleen Horvath (10 digs, 4 points, 2 aces), Megan Fox (5 points, 3 aces, 2 assists), Jordan Leiter (2 aces, 2 assists, 2 points), Maggie Phillips (2 kills), Rachel Harrison (2 kills). The County JV team swept Dominion 25-8, 25-8 to improve to 9-0 on the season. The County Freshmen team also swept Dominion 25-5, 25-7 to improve 7-0 on the season. The Raiders return to action next Tuesday as they travel to Woodgrove High School.

The Skinny: With so many new players on the court this season the biggest challenge for Valley has been to develop some consistency and some team chemistry.

Said Valley coach Laird Johnson" "With only two players returning with full playing time from last year we have had to work on getting the others up to game speed and they are responding well. We still have high expectations for the season and feel we should be in contention for the district title again. Our goal as always is to advance to the playoffs and extend the season.

The Vikes defeated Langley after dropping the first two sets. Offensive leaders were Abby McIntyre with 13 kills and Taylor Maddox with 10 kills. Katelyn Hamilton split setting duties with Brittany Brown with Hamilton collecting 16 assists and Brown adding 12. Whitney Jenkins and Taylor Maddox anchored the defense with 12 digs and 10 digs. Valley's front line controlled the net recording a total of 19 blocking combinations (solo and assists).
