Boys Lacrosse: Stone Bridge Celebrates Southward's Signing with Limestone

Ashburn (Feb. 21, 2012) - Stone Bridge High School celebrated last week the college signing of senior standout goalie Jesse Southward, who will continue his education and lacrosse career next year at NCAA D2 Limestone College in South Carolina.

Southward owns all of the Stone Bridge goal tending records including Saves in a Game (20), Saves in a Season (153), and Saves in a Career(384). As a junior last season, Southward was a captain and garnered both Team MVP and 1st Team All-District Honors as Stone Bridge posted an 11-5 record.

Wrestling: Loudoun Crowns 2 State Champions! Potomac Falls' Zulkhuu wins AA 152 Title; Freedom's Timbers Takes Down AAA 285 Crown

(Feb. 19, 2012) - Wrestling state titles have been tough for Loudoun athletes to bring home with just 20 young men achieving the honor in the past 41 years, but on Saturday both Potomac Falls senior Batchka Zulkhuu and Freedom senior DaQuante Timbers captured state championships.

Zulkhuu became the first local wrestler to win a state title, since another Panther Justin Wheaton did it in 2005, when he captured the 152 pound AA championship in Salem. Zulkhuu won by technical fall over Andrew Saunders of Northside in the finals, 21-6, to cap a 52-4 season.

Just hours later, at Robinson High School in Fairfax, Timbers completed a total domination of the 285-pound weight class in AAA with a pin in 3:08 over Jake Pinkston of Robinson. It was the third fall in four matches for Timbers as he needed just 48 seconds to advance to the quarterfinals and 1:19 to make it to the semifinals. His 15-6 semifinal win over Marshall's Matt Crawford was Timbers only match that didn't end early. The victory left Timbers 55-2 on the season.

Basketball: Loudoun Valley Boys, Loudoun County Girls Win Dulles District Tournament Titles

(Feb. 17, 2012) - The Loudoun Valley boys and Loudoun County girls captured Dulles District tournament basketball titles Friday night at Heritage High School. The Valley boys beat Potomac Falls, 57-37, and the County girls beat Woodgrove, 39-33.

In the boys game, Loudoun Valley (22-3) scored the first 11 points of the championship  and led Potomac Falls (17-8), 15-2, after the first quarter with senior John Yoxthimer scoring 13 of his game-high 21. He also had 10 board as the Vikings out-rebounded the Panthers, 42-27. In all, four Vikes ended in double figures with junior Jovon Miller scoring  14 and junior s Cameron Kiani and Josh Grimard each getting 10.

Potomac Falls, 1 of 15 from 3-point range in the loss, was led by Greg Graves with 11 points and six rebounds.

In the girls game, Loudoun County (19-7) trailed early sophomore Maggie Phillips fueled a 12-2 run that started midway in the first quarter and put the Raider up for good. By halftime the Raiders were up by double digits, 21-11, and the Wolverines could only claw back to within in five points in the second half.

Phillips finished with 17 points on 7 of 10 shooting. Seniors Erica Linnemann and Katrina Kirby had eight points each for the Raiders. Senior Casey Cummings hauled down 13 rebounds for County and Kirby had eight.

Woodgrove junior Sarah Hardison and sophomore Halle Lynch each had nine.

Volleyball: Heritage Celebrates College Commitments of Kamis and Yokoyama

Leesburg (Feb. 17, 2012) - Heritage High School held a celebration Wednesday for for two seniors that will play NCAA D3 volleyball next year, Christina Kamis at Washington and Lee and Stephanie Yokoyama at Johns Hopkins.

Yokoyama, a four-year starter, broke the VHSL record for career assists with 3,300 and for service points with 1,057. She was named AA first team all-state, Region II and Dulles District. She was named the Dulles District's Player of the Year after leading the Pride to a 22-2 record.

Kamis was a behind-the-scenes role model for the Pride program and a big reason that in 2010 the team advanced to the AAA state quarterfinals. She picked up first team All-Cedar Run District and second team All-Northwest Region honors that campaign.

Basketball: Updating the Region II Division 3 Basketball Possible Match-ups

(Feb. 17, 2012) - If you think the process for seeding the Region II boys and girls basketball tournaments is crazy, remember that the athletic directors rejected a proposal that called for all region teams to board buses on the first playoff night ... proceed to a pay telephone and follow instructions to a gym to play ... of course, the fact that there are no more pay telephones left in the U.S. defeated this plan.

What we have then, is Jeremy "Hoops" Huber ... a humble prognosticator who could be called Dr. Huber as he earned a PhD in bracketology from the University of Hoopsville ... Huber emerged late last night again from his glass-enclosed bubble located under the Potomac River and predicted not only six more weeks of high school playoffs but the following update for Region II Division 3 boys and girls brackets:

The Good old Jefferson District seems to be throwing a monkey wrench into my predictions! I saw tonight on twitter that @scrimmageplay has "confirmed" that the Western Albemarle-Charlottesville, Jefferson District boys final on Friday night is "win and your in" in regards to regionals with Monticello already in; I assume then that they go off the following model for rankings ... regular season winner, tournament winner, regular season results ... if that's the case, then it would play out like so (we'll assume a high seed - Western Albemarle - wins):

Football: Dominion SR E.J. Holland Commits to NCAA D2 UVA-Wise

Sterling (Feb. 17, 2012) - Dominion High School senior defensive end/linebacker E.J. Holland has signed a nearly full scholarship to play football next year at the University of Virginia at Wise.

Holland, a back-to-back all-Dulles District second team at LB, helped the Titans in 2010 earn the school's first ever playoff bid. The 6-foot-2, 225-pound Holland says he will bulk up at UVA-Wise and compete at DE.

(Feb 24, 2012) - Stone Bridge High School grad Johny Bladel, a junior pitcher and outfielder for NCAA Division I James Madison University (JMU) Dukes, has been named to the 2012 Preseason All Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Team.

As a sophomore, Bladel was named American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) First Team All-East Region, Second Team All-CAA, and First Team All-State.

Girls Basketball: Woodgrove Fights Off Upset-Minded Tuscarora to Set Up Third Meeting with LC in 8 Days

Woodgrove continues to fly high!

(Feb. 16, 2012) - The Woodgrove High School girls basketball team fought off an upset-minded Tuscarora team for a 50-35 Dulles District semifinal win Wednesday that set up another Woodgrove vs. Loudoun County meeting in Friday's 6 p.m. title game at Heritage High School. It will be the fourth meeting on the season and third meeting in eight days for the two schools.

After struggling through a sluggish first half Wednesday, the Wolverines applied their patented
defense to pull ahead for good. Woodgrove trailed by three at the half, but outscored the Huskies 33-14 in the second half for the win.

Boys Basketball: Broad Run JR Nigel Johnson Named ESPNHS Player of the Week for East Region

(Feb. 16, 2012) - The honors keep on coming for Broad Run High School junior Nigel Johnson as he has been named by ESPNHS as the boys basketball Player of the Week for the East Region. Johnson earned it for a 3-game performance that netted 110 points including an all-time Loudoun record of 55 in a 109-014 overtime loss to Osbourn in the Cedar Run District semifinals.

The Skinny: Briar Woods held by Panther defense without a field goal in second quarter fell behind by 21 and then staged a furious 4th quarter comeback with 26 points fueled by six 3-pointers that just fell short in an entertaining contest in Ashburn (more later from Dan "Buzzer Beater" Sousa). BW senior Myles Tate led all scorers with 26 while Potomac Falls' Greg Graves and Wanya Allen combined for 30. PF depth was a key with Panthers getting six or more points from six players.

The Skinny: Katrina Kirby scored a game-high 24 points as the Raiders earned a third shot at the Wolverines after falling to them last Friday on the final day of the regular season and then on Saturday in a one-game playoff to decided this tournament's top seed. County's front line had a total 42 in this win with Maggie Phillips (10) and Casey Cummings (8) too much for the Pride. Heritage was led by Breana Smart with 16 and Kayla Tibbs scored 10.

Girls Basketball: Loudoun County's Linnemann and Woodgrove's Hardison Named Dulles District Players of the Year

(Feb. 15, 2012) - Loudoun County senior Erica Linnemann and Woodgrove High School junior Sarah Hardison have been named the Dulles District Players of the Year in a vote of the coaches. Linnemann picked up Division 4 honors and Hardison Division 3.

Linnemann and Haridson led their respective teams to the regular season district co-championship with the Raiders and Wolverines each going 15-1 in league play. Boys Basketball: Potomac Falls' Graves, Woodgrove's Gilson Named Dulles District Players of the Year

(Feb. 15, 2012) - Potomac Falls High School senior Greg Graves and Woodgrove High School senior Brad Gilson have been named Dulles District boys basketball Players of the Year in a vote of the district's coaches. Graves earned the Division 4 nod and Gilson the Division 3 honor.

Graves has signed to play for Mount Saint Mary's and Gilson with Columbia.

Chad Dawson, who led Loudoun Valley to the regular-season district title, was named the Division 4 Coach of the Year and Steve Douglas of Woodgrove picked up Division 3 honors.
