Girls Soccer: Region II Bracket Released - Briar Woods, Freedom on Road, Woodgrove Hosts on Monday; Broad Run Hosts Tuesday

(May 27, 2011) - The Region II girls soccer bracket has been released with Briar Woods and Freedom on the road Monday and Woodgrove at home. Three-time defending state champion Broad Run will host a game on Tuesday.

Briar Woods is at Kettle Run and Freedom at Millbrook on Monday while Woodgrove will host Western Albemarle. Broad Run hosts the winner of Briar Woods vs. Kettle Run Tuesday setting up a potential match-up of the two Ashburn rivals.

Football: Park View Players Attend "4th and Life" Forum Hosted at Redskins Park

Park View Patriots are front and center at forum

(May 27, 2011) - Football players and coaches from Park View High School were among more than 100 local players selected to attend a 4th and Life High School Football Forum held recently at Redskins Park.

The forum, hosted by the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation and sponsored by Coca-Cola, included an informal, conversational atmosphere between Redskins alumni players such as LaVar Arrington, Gary Clark and Dexter Manley, and the high school athletes.

“To have this opportunity to give back, what better way to come back and be in here. It's a moment of giving back and sharing, with like I said, our little brothers," said Arrington. "To me, it's an elite fraternity when you are a football player, and to come back and talk to these young individuals, it's an honor. It's actually a very big honor to be able to do it here.”

The forum included players from 10 schools from Prince George's MD, Fairfax, Loudoun, Shenandoah and Warren County.

The forum allowed the young athletes to hear directly from some of the most well-known Redskins to play the game and learn from them what it takes to be successful as a football player and as a person. The discussion  touched on a variety of topics from peer pressure to staying and living healthy to planning for your next steps in life.

Baseball: Stone Bridge's Rositano Named Liberty District Player of the Year, Bulldogs Plank is Coach of the Year

(May 27, 2011) - Stone Bridge High School senior Spenser Rositano, who hit .400 to lead the Bulldogs to a Liberty District regular-season title, has been named the 2011 Player of the Year in a vote of the district's coaches. Stone Bridge skipper Sam Plank was named Coach of the Year and McLean junior Josh Sborz was named Pitcher of the Year.

In all the Bulldogs had seven players selected to the first team.

Youth Sports: Baseball - 13th Annual Mickie Gordon Tournament Opens Today

(May 27, 2011) - The Greater Loudoun Babe Ruth League hosts starting today the 13th Annual Mickie Gordon Tournament which will run through May 30th in Loudoun County

Teams from Maryland, West Virginia and Northern Virginia will be playing in the 13th Annual Mickie Gordon Tournament hosted by the Greater Loudoun Babe Ruth League.

The tournament will feature 26 teams and games start Friday night at Fireman’s Field in Purcellville, Virginia. The first game will feature GLBR’s own 13 year-old team hosting the Potomac Riverdogs, a Dulles Little League Travel team. First pitch is scheduled for 5:45 p.m. The matchups continue throughout the weekend with each team playing at least three games in the tournament.

The tournament games will be held at Franklin Park, Fireman’s Field, and, new for this year, Woodgrove High School in Purcellville. Teams compete Friday, Saturday and Sunday for a spot in the championship games to be held at Fireman’s Field, Monday May 30th.

Football: Dominion's Ivan Ayala to Play at NCAA D3 Mount Union

(May 26, 2011) - Dominion High School will hold a college signing ceremony on Wednesday, June 1 at 4 p.m. in the school's media center for senior Ivan Ayala, who will play football next year at NCAA Division III power Mount Union.

Ayala joins teammate Trey Baxter, who previously signed with Mount Union. The Alliance, Ohio, school is 153-6 since 2000 and has made sixth straight appearances in the NCAA Division III National Championship game -- the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl. The Purple Raiders finished a fifth straight undefeated regular season in the Ohio Athletic Conference in the fall and won 14 straight games before falling in the title contest.

Ayala is a 6-foot-2, 245-pound lineman that helped the Titans secure the school's first ever playoff appearance in the fall. He was second team all-Dulles District at offensive tackle.

Boys Basketball: LTT 10th Grade Gold Wins Division II State Championship

(May 26, 2011) - The Loudoun Triple Threat Gold 10th Grade boys registered an impressive 5-0 record in Richmond to win the 2011 Virginia AAU Division II State Title.

The 11-man roster represents nine area high schools. In their third consecutive trip to the State finals, the team posted an average margin of victory of 20 points per game with victories over BWSL Wolverines, Virginia Storm, Richmond Surge, Virginia Warriors and the Winchester Eagles. The Championship will result in a high seeding for LTT Gold’s return trip to AAU Division II Nationals at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando this July where they hope to improve upon their 12th place finish in 2010.

Track and Field: Loudoun Valley Girls 2nd at Cedar Run Meet; Heritage Boys, Girls 3rd

(May 26, 2011) - The Loudoun Valley High School girls track and field team took second at the Cedar Run District meet last week behind power Battlefield. The Bobcats swept the boys meet as well.

Heritage boys and girls were third in the 5-team meet.

Valley's Victoria White was runner-up in the high jump (4-10) and in the discus (78-01). Viking Alex Davis was third in the shot (25-05). Jennifer Friberg (16.19) and Tess Warner (18.19) were 2-3 in the 100 meter hurdles. Friberg won the 300 meter hurdles (49.59) with Warner third (51.08).

Heritage's Myah Robinson was  first in the 100 meter hurdles (16.07), second in the 300 hurdles (49.67) and second in the long jump (16-02.50) and teammate Whitney Amo was third (16-01.75). Hertiage's Ashley Gregory was second in the triple jump (32-07) and Sharar Payne was third in the discus (75-02.50).

Heritage's Troy Newcomer and Marcus Finney were 1-2 in the high jump, both at 6-00. Finney took the 110 hurdles (14.78). Heritage's Desean Griggs was third in the discus (117-07.50).

Valley's Kevin Wiley was first in the shot (49-04) and Colin Smith was second in the discus (117-10). BenjaminWalker won the 800 (2:02.65) and Daniel Ferrell was third in the 3200 (10:21.78).

Track and Field: Stone Bridge Boys Runner-up at Liberty District Meet

(May 26, 2011) - The Stone Bridge High School boys track and field team finished runner-up to South Lakes at last week's Liberty District meet. The Seahawks also took the girls title as well.

Nia Hill for Stone Bridge was first in the triple jump (35-09.75), second in the long jump (15-07.75) and third in the 200 meters (27.08). Haley Springman captured the discus (117-08) and was second in the shot (32-10). Also for SB: Andie Acosta was second in the triple jump (34-015) and Amanda Morgenthal was third in the 100 ( 13.20).

The boys were led by Dexter Rogers who was second in the long jump (20-10.50), second in the 100 (11.26) and third in the triple jump (42.03.75) and Adrian Thomas, who won the 400 (49.63) and was 2nd in the 200 (22.39).  Also for SB: Kelvin Ojo was third in both the 100 (11.31) and 200 (22.55), John Starke was second in the 400 (50.25), Joe Lynch was second in the 800 (1:57.92) and Jonathon Kasande tied for third in the high jump (5-08).

The Bulldogs were especially strong in the relays, capturing both the 4x100 (Stan Johnson teamed with Ojo, Starke and Rogers) with a 43.97 and the 4x400 (Rausaun Goldring teamed with Lynch, Thomas and Starke) with a 3:24.59

College SIgning: Heritage Holds Ceremony for Six Athletes Headed to College Ranks

Leesburg (May 26, 2011) - Heritage High School held a signing ceremony on Tuesday to celebrate six athletes headed to the college ranks.

Those honored at the ceremony included: Brittany Burkhard – University of Maryland – Cheerleading; Shane Carrera – Bowdoin College – Baseball; Erika Grabbi – Princeton University – Lacrosse; Tyler McCullock – Eastern Mennonite University- Baseball; Troy Newcomer – Christopher Newport University – Track; and Damon Rosenburg – Denison University – Swimming.

News: Stone Bridge Honored for Work on Athletic Fields

Ashburn (May 26, 2011) - Pioneer Athletics announced earlier this month that Stone Bridge High School has been selected as one of the winners of the 2010 Fields of Excellence Award.

As a winner, Stone Bridge High School will receive a certificate of recognition and a Fields of Excellence banner that they can proudly display at their winning field. Pioneer may also use the picture of Stone Bridge High School’s winning field in their upcoming publications and annual calendar.

Softball: Dominion Junior Brittanne Gasser Makes Verbal Commitment to Play NCAA D1 at Central Florida

Sterling (May 24, 2011) - Dominion High School junior center fielder, Brittanne Gasser, has given a verbal commitment to play at NCAA Division I University of Central Florida starting in 2012-13.

Gasser led the Titans offense with a .469 batting average and a .812 slugging percentage. She had 4 home runs and 20 RBI's on the season.
