Ashburn (Sept. 26, 2009) - The Broad Run High School football not only won its 19th consecutive game Friday, but the Spartans did it big, rolling over rival Park View, 52-22, in a AA Dulles District opener that saw defending Division 4 state champion Broad Run score 39 points in the first half.
Broad Run (1-0, 5-0) dominated the first quarter and went up 14-0 and then the Spartans exploded for four touchdowns in the second quarter, three on passes from sophomore quarterback Connor Jessop to senior wide receiver Adrian Flemming. Leading 39-7 at the half, Broad Run senior running back T.J. Peeler went 54 yards on the Spartans first play from scrimmage in the second half to make it 46-7.
Peeler took the rest of the night off, finishing with 207 yards on 13 carries for a 15.9 yards per rush average. Jessop was an efficient 5 of 6 for 95 yards. Both Joey Quigg and David Weaver added touchdown runs.
The Spartan defense stifled the Patriots, throwing the Park View running game for minus yardage on the first five attempts of the contest and after scoring a touchdown on the game's opening drive, the Spartans followed by recovering a Park View fumble in the end zone three plays to make it 14-0. Senior Josh Nappier came up with the recovery.
Park View (0-1, 2-2) finished the first quarter with a net yardage of minus-16 while Broad Run piled up 129 yards in the opening quarter. The Patriots earned a brief respite by pulling off a fake punt in the second quarter to keep a long drive alive. After 14 plays and more than eight minutes with the ball, Park View scored on an 17-yard pass from Brandon Lee to J.R. Shooks on 4th-and-3.
With the score 20-7, Broad Run blew the game open with three touchdowns in the final three minutes of the half. Quigg's nice kickoff return set up a 54-yard, 2-play drive that had Peeler gaining 15 and then Weaver making a highlight reel run, breaking several tackles, as he took it in from 39 yards from the wingback spot.
The Spartans held Park View to 3-and-out and Flemming was able to return a punt to the Patriot 40. Again it only took two plays as Peeler broke off a 25-yard run and Flemming caught a fade in the end zone for a score on the next play. It appeared that Park View might score before the end of the half as Tommy Sedeski took a kickoff 54 yards to the Spartan 31, but on 4th-and-10 from the Broad Run 12, a bad snap, left Sedeski very little time to throw and he was sacked for a 17-yard loss with 36.2 seconds to go in the half.
Peeler then went 25 yards and Jessop hit Quigg for a 26-yard catch on a play that Quigg took a huge lick but managed to hold onto the ball. After spiking the ball, Jessop threw to Flemming on a middle screen and the lanky senior weaved his way into the end zone for this third score of the quarter with just 18.9 seconds left.
Broad Run coach Mike Burnett said after the game that his team wasn't trying to make a statement with the overwhelming opening but that his team was just trying to make plays. He did tell his team after the game that the win was one of the executions of a gameplan since he took over the program in 2006.
Park View coach Andy Hill may have summed it up best: "Broad Run will always be dangerous because they always play big in big games."
