Nothing Hokie About This Lax News: First up is some exciting news as Broad Run High School grad Kate Sistare ('09) has made the Virginia Tech 2010 women's lacrosse team as a walk-on. This news comes via her mother -- and Spartan coach! -- Jen Melhuish:
"Hey Dan, Great news. Kate went through the walk on tryouts at Virginia Tech and just was notified that she has made the 2010 Virginia Tech Women's Lacrosse Team! We are beside excited! Lots of hours spent working out this summer has paid off! Go Hokies!!!!"
Sistare was the Dulles District Player of the Year in the spring and helped the Spartans to a fourth straight Dulles District title. In fact, in Sistare's four years playing for her mother at Broad Run, the Spartans did not lose a single contest to a district opponent.
Old Dominion Makes History: Football returned to Old Dominion University for the first time since 1940 and two Loudoun athletes are on the roster -- Park View High School grad Robbie Duncan ('08) and Broad Run High School grad Bryan Morrison ('08). If you remember correctly, these two great offensive linemen were a big reason that in 2008 Broad Run and Park View clashed on the final day of the regular season with perfect 9-0 records. BR won that game but lost the next week in a rematch in the first round of the playoffs. Both are redshirt freshmen this season. Good luck!
Upset Special!: Stone Bridge High School grad Ryan Moody ('08) made his first college start as a redshirt freshmen Saturday and it was a memorable debut as Moody caught 3 balls for 79 yards including a 48-yarder that set up William and Mary's first TD in a shocking 26-14 upset at Virginia.
Moody was starting for senior D.J. McAulay, the Tribe's leading receiver a year ago that has battled leg problems int he preseason ... McAulay, after watching Moody pile up the 70 yards in the first half, made a quick recovery and was able to go the second half.
At 5-foot-11 Moody wasn't given the proper consideration by the "big boys" such as UVa and what a shame as he is one of the best high school WR's I have seen and he punctuated his Bulldog career with three TD catches in the state title game in 2007 (six catches for 158 yards in the win over Potomac!)... played at Scott Stadium, the very same field he made his college debut on Saturday.
So the Cavs, should have been warned (please tell me they scout a state title game in their home stadium for goodness sakes!), this kid can play football.
There are more local connections on The Tribe as Potomac Falls grad Adrian Tracy ('05) was W&M's leading solo tackler in the win with eight stops by himself from his defensive end spot.
Two other Stone Bridge players are on the roster, both freshmen offensive linemen: Trevor Springman ('09) and Dexter Strong ('09).
William and Mary is No. 7 in the FCS latest poll (think NCAA Division I-AA though for marketing reasons the NCAA doesn't call it that anymore).
At No. 6 is James Madison which also had some local ties including Park View High School grad Donny Smith ('05) who starts at center. Another center is freshman Aaron Kakol of Briar Woods ('09). And there are two Stone Bridge players on the roster (hey, aren't there Stone Bridge grads on just about every college team these days!): running back Daniel Allen ('09) and WR Michael Prince ('09).
The Dukes will look to repeat W&M's magic with an upset over Maryland this weekend.
Demon Deacon Devin: And finally, Stone Bridge High School grad Devin Brown ('07) is one of the featured backs this season at Wake Forest where he caught a touchdown pass Saturday and rushed eight times for 46 yards and pulled in three balls for 32 yards -- and had seven yards in punt returns -- as the Demon Deacons opened with a 24-21 loss to Baylor.
Stone Bridge grads Zach Thompson ('09) and Mike Olson ('09) will redshirt this season at Wake Forest and Thompson's twin Patrick Thompson ('09) will enroll at the school in January to make it four Bulldogs in the football program.
