Baseball: Woodgrove Bounces Back with 12-1 Win Over Heritage to Grab Dulles No. 3 Seed

(May 25, 2012) - The Woodgrove High School baseball team bounced back from a tough semifinal loss to beat Heritage Thursday, 12-1 in five innings, to secure the Dulles District's third seed heading into the Region II tournament. The Pride also advance as the No. 4 seed.

Matt Jeffery went 3 for 4 in the win with two home runs, a double and five RBIS, and Matt Reed was 3 for 3 with three doubles and three RBIs. Scott Van Steelant, who picked up the win with three innings of scoreless work, also went yard with a two-run home run for the Wolverines.

Offensively for the Pride: Lorenzo Calderon 1-3; Zack Hopeck 2-3; Drew Woodford 0-1, BB, R; Brandall Peters 1-2, 3B, RBI; Nick Fuhrmann 0-1, BB.

The Dulles title game between Potomac Falls and Loudoun Valley was halted and resumes Friday.

Girls Soccer: Stone Bridge One Win Away from AAA State After 3-1 Victory at Lake Braddock

(May 25, 2012) - The Stone Bridge High School girls soccer team is one win away from a AAA state tournament bid after a 3-1 Northern Region quarterfinal at Lake Braddock Thursday night.

Trailing in the first half, Stone Bridge junior Murielle Tiernan received the ball from junior Carson Cyphers and dribbled through multiple Lake Braddock players before putting the ball in the net to tie the game before halftime. Junior Ashley Herndon scored two goals in the second half of the game off of passes from Tiernan.

SB goalkeeper sophomore Natalie Grundler had three saves in the game. Stone Bridge, now 14-2-2 overall,  will play at Yorktown on Wednesday May 30 at 7 p.m. in the regional semifinals.

Girls Lacrosse: Travel Pays off for Raiders as Loudoun County Clinches First Ever State Bid with Win on the Road

(May 25, 2012) - After spending over 14 hours traveling, sitting and waiting for lightning to pass the Loudoun County High School girl lacrosse team arrived back to Loudoun County after securing a spot in the AA Northern Sectional final on Friday. The Raiders (15-4) will play at Woodgrove tonight in the sectional final. 

The Raiders defeated Culpeper County Thursday, 20-6, in a match-up of two teams progressing deeper into the playoffs than they ever have before.

 Scoring for the Raiders included: Senior Rachel Solis (8 g, 5 a), juniors Sarah Greenspon (3 g, 1 a) and Haley Knudsen (2 g, 3 a), sophomores Megan Norris (2 g, 3 a), Rachel Conway (1 g) and Alex Lord (1 g, 3 a) and Freshman Emily Solis (3 g, 2 a). Defensively, the Raiders were an almost unyielding wall led by freshman goalie Maddy Wheeler. Aiding the defense were seniors Shannon Rose and Stephanie Modica, juniors Becca Vang, Stephanie Schulze and Ashlee Bowers and freshman Erica Beal.

Purcellville (May 25, 2012) - Woodgrove High School's girls soccer team scored two first-half goals on their way to finishing off the Dulles Double of winning the district's season and tournament titles with a 2-0 home victory against Loudoun County May 24 in the tournament final.

Juniors Brittany Basinger and Ashley Bonner each netted goals in the first half to give the Wolverines (18-0-1) a 2-0 lead at halftime. A flash of lightning during halftime led to a weather delay that lasted approximately 70 minutes before the game was called and ruled official.

Boys Soccer: Tuscarora Slides to Dulles Tournament Title with 2-0 Win over Briar Woods

Ashburn (May 25, 2012) - After securing the first Dulles District tournament title in Tuscarora High School's short two-year history with a 2-0 win at Briar Woods, the Huskies boys soccer team, held hands at midfield, sprinted as a group and splashed their way in head first slid-and-slide celebration towards the team bench.

Tuscarora (16-2-2), with just one senior on its roster, got goals from sophomore Edgar Resendiz with 3:11 left in the first half, which was played in a constant rain, and a goal from junior Armando Grazon with 25:13 left in the contest.

"It's great to win the first district tournament championship in the history of the school," said Tuscarora coach Dave Gryder. "It shows the amount of work they have put in as a team since November."

Purcellville (May 25, 2012) - Woodgrove High School made up for lost time after a lighting delay forced its AA Northern Sectional Girls Lacrosse semifinal game against Purcellville rival Loudoun Valley to begin about 25 minutes later than the scheduled 8 p.m. start time May 24.

The host Wolverines scored three goals in a little more than a minute to start Thursday's game and maintained a lead the rest of the way for a 21-11 victory. The win advances second-year Woodgrove into Friday's championship game against Loudoun County and secures the Wolverines a spot in the state tournament for a second consecutive year.

"It's extremely exciting and satisfying," Woodgrove coach Bob Fuller said of returning to the state playoffs. Fuller was an assistant coach at Loudoun Valley prior to starting up the Wolverine program. "The girls have worked even harder this year. Valley is a great team and County is a great team. To make it back is a great thing."

Boys Lacrosse: Woodgrove Storms Past Briar Woods to Clinch State Tournament Trip

Ashburn (May 25, 2012) - A slow start in March doomed the Woodgrove High School boys lacrosse teams hopes of a Dulles District regular-season title, but the Wolverines have dreams of a bigger banner after they clinched a VHSL state tournament spot Thursday with a 12-10 win at Briar Woods in the AA Northern Section semifinals.

Briar Woods (16-2), the Dulles District regular-season and tournament champion, was unbeaten this year against AA level competition with their lone loss coming against AAA power Chantilly, but Woodgrove (14-5) jumped out to a quick start with senior Chad Niergarth scoring three of his four goals in the first 4:12 of play and the Wolverines never trailed in the contest.

"We are peaking at the right time. We struggled early, took some tough losses and we grew as a team. We are getting better each game," said Woodgrove coach Jeff Lewandowski.

Baseball: Potomac Falls Looks to Add Another Title Tonight in Dulles Finals

(May 24, 2012) - The Potomac Falls High School baseball team is shooting for yet another title tonight as the Panthers host Loudoun Valley at 7 p.m. in the Dulles District championship game. Prior to the finals, Heritage and Woodgrove meet in the consolation game at 4 p.m.

The Panthers started the year at 2-2 and have since gone on a 18-game winning streak to claim the Dulles District regular-season title and a regional top spot.

Football: "Jacked up"! Stone Bridge's Allen Commits to National Champion Alabama

Ashburn (May 24, 2012) - Stone Bridge High School junior defensive standout Jonathan Allen must be "Jacked Up" to make his college decision with his commitment this week to BCS National Champion Alabama.

While a defensive lineman for the Bulldogs, ESPN's recruiting blog says that Allen would be a natural fit in the Crimson Tide's "Jack" Backer role. Read more here.

The Washington Post's Paul Tenorio (who may or may not sleep in his car on Bulldog coach Mickey Thompson's driveway ... just teasing Paul) weighed in on Monday with a big story on Allen's commitment. Allen told Tenorio that it was Florida and 'Bama as the final two frontrunners. Read more here.

The 6-foot-3, 225-pound Allen is ranked in the Top 100 of all players in the U.S. by some services and in ranked in the Top 10 of defensive ends by some.

(May 23, 2012) - Leesburg Christians School's athletic program had quite a spring s their baseball, girls soccer and track program all won their respective state championships. LCS competes in the Old Dominion Association of Christian Schools (ODACS) and this is the first time any school has swept all spring sports in the conference.

News: Western Cup Exchanges Hands in 2012

Purcellville (May 23, 2012) - The Woodgrove High School Wolverines have won the Western Cup in their second year of athletic competition with neighboring Loudoun Valley Vikings.

The schools created the Western Cup in 2010, the year Woodgrove opened, to cultivate and generate a friendly rivalry while also bringing a tight-knit community together. Loudoun Valley had been the only high school in Purcellville since 1962.

Sterling (May 23, 2012) - The Park View High School football team will host its third annual  fundraising golf tournament on June 18 at Algonkian Regional Golf Course.

Breakfast is at 8 a.m. with tee off at 9 a.m. The 4-player scramble (best ball format) also features lunch and prizes. Register before June 10 at a cost of $340 per team (or $85 a person). (May 23, 2012) - Four Loudoun athletes -- Sam Bezell, Seth Miller, Grant Swaney and Jimmy Wyrick -- helped private school St. Stephen's/St. Agnes bring home a VISAA boys lacrosse state title this week with a 7-4 over the Blue Ridge School in Charlottesville.

Swaney had three goals and two assists in the win while Miller added a goal. Beazell was in goal for the victory and Wyrick played on defense. Swaney, Miller and Wyrick are two sport athletes for the Saints, also playing soccer.

South Riding (May 23, 2012) - Freedom High School junior Ryan Adams threw a 1-hitter and junior Collin Dean drove in a run and scored a run to lead the Eagles to a 2-0 win over Osbourn in the AAA Cedar Run District tournament finals Tuesday. Broad Run saw its season end with a 4-3 loss to Patriot in the consolation game.

Freedom (16-6 record), which also claimed the Cedar Run regular season title, will host the winner of Patrick Henry-Roanoke vs. Stafford in a Northwest Region quarterfinal game on Memorial Day, Monday May 28.

Adams allowed just three Osbourn hitters to get on base (one reached on a walk and the other on an error) and the only hit he gave up came in the first inning to the third Patriot batter of he day. He finished with five strikeouts.


Despite the stellar performance Adams was very modest about his role in the victory: “Defense was key. They locked down big plays with two double plays."

Girls Basketball: Broad Run Names Sean Gundry as New Varsity Coach

(May 23, 2012) - Broad Run High School has named Fairfax High School assistant coach Sean Gundry as it new varsity coach. He replaces Chris Pasternak who stepped down in February after one season in place of long-time Spartan coach Mike O'Hara, who resigned in 2011 after 10 seasons.
