(Feb. 18, 2011) - The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors is seeking input on its Fiscal Year 2012 budget, including the operating budget for Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS).

(Feb. 17, 2011) - Heritage High School freshman Kayla Tibbs, who has helped the Pride toe school's best ever regular season and first ever regional playoff bid, has been named first team All-Cedar Run District in a vote of the coaches.

Two of Tibbs' teammates made the second team -- Kayla Whoolery and Sydney Mcdonald -- as did three Loudoun Valley standouts -- Jamie Gutch, Kelsey Luck and Jillian Hurtt

Volleyball: Tuscarora's Megan Bryn Named Honorable Mention to PrepVolleyball.com Frosh 59 List

Leesburg (Feb. 17, 2011) - Tuscarora High School's Megan Bryn has been tabbed as one of the top freshman volleyball players in the country as she was named Honorable Mention this week in PrepVolleyball.com's Frosh 59 List.

The list recognizes "2010’s best playing high school freshmen in the country”.

Bryn, the area's only freshman to be named, lead the first-year Huskies in five statistical categories and was named team MVP.

Here’s what PrepVolleyball.com said about her:

"Megan Bryn, 5-9 OH, Tuscarora (Leesburg, Virginia) – A natural leader selected as team captain, Bryn is a powerful attacker who led a first-year varsity program in kills and aces in 2010. She also was second in digs, displaying the back court prowess of a libero."

ByrnMegan is a member of the NVVA 15 Select-1 club team, the only area 15s team to be listed by PrepVolleyball.com (Honorable Mention) as one of the best 15s club teams in the country.

News: Loudoun County Mental Health Peer Council is Here to Help Those Suffering from Mental Health Issues

(Feb. 17, 2011) - The Loudoun County Mental Health Peer Council is not a program, doesn't have a building or address, but is simply just people in recovery (peers) that want to help anyone suffering from mental health issues in Loudoun County.

Their website is designed to give people the who, what, and where to go for as many services that are available to help you or a loved one recover from most problems associated with poor mental health. You can also contact the council at cpeers@yahoo.com

Youth Sports - Gymnastics - Dulles Gymnastics Captures 9 First Place All-Around Scores in Weekend Meets

Sterling (Feb. 17, 2011) - Dulles Gymnastics Academy, the newest gymnastics facility in Northern Virginia, competed in two meets last weekend, capturing nine first place All-Around scores.

The competitive girls competed in the Dalmatian Classic in North Wales, PA featuring 15 teams and over 450 athletes from Pennsylvania, Ohio, New Jersey and Virginia. The Boys Team competed in the President’s Day Meet at Youth Sports in Woodbridge.

Ashburn (Feb. 17, 2011) - Now here is some "upsetting" news: The Loudoun County Animal Control is cautioning Loudoun residents of a series of Wolverine attacks this week.

While this young group of Wolverines, travelling from the western half of the county, was thought relatively harmless heading to the Ashburn area this week, there was a confirmed surprise attack of Spartans at Broad Run High School on Valentine's Day and then last night a high-flying flock of Falcons were grounded at Briar Woods High School by the increasingly confident Wolverines.

The next Wolverine sighting should come Friday in Purcellville when a pack of Panthers are scheduled to step into the Wolverine den ...

OK ... OK ... I had to have a little fun after watching the Woodgrove High School boys basketball team, the No. 7 seed coming into the Dulles District tournament and just 1-8 since Jan. 22, exit the court Wednesday night with big smiles on their faces after a second straight stunning win -- this time 68-52 over No. 3 seed Briar Woods, just two days after a 69-67 shocker over No. 2 Broad Run, which was 19-3 on the season.

"It ranks with the best back-to-back wins Woodgrove has ever had," said Woodgrove coach Steve Douglas with a wry smile when asked to access the historic importance of this week's twin upsets in comparison with his tenure at Dominion where he led the once-struggling Titans program to a state quarterfinal appearance.

The first-year Wolverines have actually won three in a row this season but that came in the first half of the season when things were going well for the team with no seniors as Douglas guided them to a 6-4 start including wins over AAA schools Loudoun Valley and Heritage.

But then January set in and the Wolverines weren't improving in their second spin around the Dulles District schedule as teams they played to three points such as Park View, beat them by 14 the second time, or Briar Woods, which won by 11 in a first meeting and then 16 the second time. In fact, after the holiday break, Woodgrove's only wins came against winless first-year school Tuscarora and Douglass' former team, a struggling dominion squad.

"About two weeks ago I felt we hit a wall," said Douglas.

Boys Basketball: Stone Bridge Coach Sonny Green Steps Down After 7 Seasons

Ashburn (Feb. 16, 2011) - Stone Bridge High School boys basketball coach Sonny Green confirmed Wednesday night that he has informed the administration that he is stepping down after seven seasons with the Bulldogs.

Green took over for Mark Alexander, now the Loudoun County boys varsity coach, in 2004-05 after Alexander was called to Active Duty. In his first season, Green was named the Dulles District Coach of the Year as the program had its first winning season and the Bulldogs advanced to the Region II tournament.

The next year the Bulldogs moved to the Liberty District where they have struggled, failing to advance out of the first round of the district tournament for six straight seasons. The Bulldogs finished 5-18 this season.

Green said he "needed a break" as the reason for resigning. He was the boys basketball coach with the third longest tenure behind Potomac Falls' Jeff Hawes and Loudoun Valley's Chad Dawson, whom Green played with in college and worked with as an assistant before taking over the Stone Bridge program.

The Skinny: The Pride continue their record-setting season as they qualify for regionals for the first time ever. Heritage has now won a school record 14 games this season. It was a balanced Pride attack with five players scoring eight or more points. Jamie Gutch scored 21 points in her final game for the Vikings but it wasn't enough. After a cold start from the field in the first quarter, Heritage warmed up on their homecourt, shooting a hot 21 of 31 over the next three quarters before coach Anthony Long emptied his bench in the final minutes. Valley led early in the second quarter but Heritage, with fullcourt pressure forcing some turnovers, went on a 13-4 and never trailed again.

(Feb. 16, 2011) - Woodgrove High School junior Brad Gilson and Potomac Falls senior Lukas Mihailovich were selected as the Dulles District Division 3 and Division 4 Players of the Year in a vote of the district's boys basketball coaches.

Coach of the Year honors went to Jeff Hawes, who led Potomac Falls to another regular-season title, and to Steve Douglas, who has engineered first-year Woodgrove into the postseason tournament semifinals tonight.

In Division 3, it was Dominion High School freshman A.J. Johnson and Woodgrove first-year coach Kevin Copley taking away Player and Coach of the year honors.

Ashburn (Feb. 16, 2011) - Cheers Sports and VivaLoudoun.com released today their Athletes of the Month selections for January 2011. The January 2011 honorees met at Lifetime Fitness in Ashburn on Feb. 12 for a photo shoot.

Each month VivaLoudoun editor Dan Sousa selects the top athletes from across Loudoun's 12 public high schools for the Cheers Sports Athletes of the Month program. For January 2011, a total of just five athletes per each of the six winter sports (boys basketball, girls basketball, gymnastics, wrestling, boys swim, girls swim) were selected with the 30 athletes coming from 11 different high schools.

"Selecting just 30 athletes for the photo shoot is tough as there are so many great athletes in Loudoun," said VivaLoudoun editor and founder Dan Sousa.

Youth Sports - Gymnastics - APEX Sweeps Team Event in Pennsylvania; Sends 3 to Finals at Landover Event

(Feb. 15, 2011) - The APEX gymnastic teams Levels 5, 6 and 7 team completed a sweep of the team gold medals in the Hershey Hug and Kiss Meet in Pennsylvania over Valentine's Day Weekend.

The Level 5 Team won an additional nine gold medals and placed many gymnasts in the top three podium finishes. The level 6 and 7 teams brought home an additional 12 first place medals and topped the all around at every age group.

Level 5 gymnasts Erin Keane, Breanna Puterio, Lauren Hertel, Samantha Sharp and Raelynn Alexandre all used this meet as a qualifier to the Sectional competition where they will attempt to qualify to states.

APEX Qualifies 3 to Event Finals
The APEX Levels 8, 9 and 10 were in Landover competing at the East Coast Classic on February 11th. The Level 8 team finished fourth in team competition. The Level 9 team finished third in team competition and qualified Sara Connors, Kylie Klokis and Jessica Schaub to the State Championships.

In addition, APEX qualified three gymnasts to event finals - Maddy Scozzie on floor, Bridgette Schaal on beam and vault and Alex Cocozza on beam.

News: VHSL Appeals Subcommittee Denies Western Albemarle and Fluvanna County Appeals; Affects Region II Basketball Seeding

Charlottesville (Feb. 15, 2011) - The top-seeded Western Albemarle High School girls basketball team and the top-seeded Fluvanna High School boys basketball teams must forfeit first round victories in the Jefferson District tournament after the school's had appeals denied by the Virginia High School League Tuesday afternoon.

The decision affects Region II tournament seeding as the Division 3 and Division 4 brackets are seeded according to a forumula based in part on the finish of teams in the postseason tournament (the Dulles District for example awards its top seed to the regular-season champion and then all other seeds based on tournament finish).

Western Albemarle High School and Fluvanna County High School reported to the Virginia High School League (VHSL) office that their basketball teams had violated the Varsity/Junior Varsity Tournament Participation Limitation (58-2-2). The policy states – “When a district sponsors both a postseason junior varsity and a postseason varsity tournament, a player shall be limited to participating in only one of these tournaments.”

Western Albemarle’s violation occurred during its first round Jefferson District Tournament girls win over Goochland. Fluvanna County’s violation occurred during its boys first round Jefferson District Tournament win over Western Albemarle. As a result of the violations, both schools forfeited their first round wins for use of an ineligible player. Both schools appealed the penalty, and a hearing was conducted Tuesday afternoon, February 15.

“It’s never a good situation when rules violations occur,” said VHSL Executive Director Ken Tilley. “But the rules are designed to ensure equity for all VHSL member schools and participants.”

As in every case that comes before the VHSL Executive Subcommittee, the appeals by Western Albemarle and Fluvanna County were reviewed based upon their own merits in accordance with a thorough and structured process. After reviewing all information presented as well as testimony from school administrators and League staff, the subcommittee voted 3-0 to deny each school’s appeal.

As a result, the Jefferson District Girls Tournament second round game will be:
Goochland vs. Monticello (6:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 16, at Monticello HS)

As a result, the Jefferson District Boys Tournament second round will be:
Western Albemarle vs. Monticello (6:00 p.m. Thursday, February 17, at Monticello HS)

Wrestling: Six Loudoun Athletes Crowned Region II Champion; Freedom Finishes 4th

(Feb. 15, 2011) - Loudoun wrestlers represented very well at the Region II  meet over the weekend at Orange County High School as six area athletes were crowned champions and Freedom High School finished a solid fourth place.

The Eagles -- with two individual champions as did Loudoun County and Potomac Falls -- scored 150 points to finish 8.5 points behind third place Brentsville. Fauquier won the meet going away with 260 points and Millbrook was runner-up at 189.

Loudoun placed four schools in the top 10 with Loudoun County sixth, Potomac Falls seventh and Broad Run 10th. The top four wrestlers move on to the AA state meet this weekend in Salem and Freedom, County and Broad Run each advanced four. Potomac Falls will send its two champions and Briar Woods moves on one wrestler as 15 Loudoun athletes total will make the long trip.

Showing its depth at 112 will three advanced and it was an All-Loudoun final as Nick Rea of Potomac Falls defeated Angel Rios of Broad Run, 11-4. At 125, Loudoun County's Tyler Anthony defeated Cody Landis of James Wood, 6-2.

At 130 it was another All-Loudoun title match with Sean Gaetani of Freedom edging Neil Hartman of Broad Run, 7-5, to give the Eagles the school's first ever regional champion in wrestling. At 145 Batchka Zulkhuu of Potomac Falls continued his impressive season with a 7-5 win over Seth Baker of Fauquier.

For the first time in the finals, a Loudoun wrestler fell as David Richardson of Loudoun County lost 9-0 to Van Grimes of Fauquier in the 152 match but teammate Kenton Perez was up next at 160 and he secured a 12-0 win over Will Prados of Brentsville.

The night ended with another Freedom champion as DaQuante Timbers, 45-2 on the season, pinned Ben Carey of Warren County in 1:38.

One wrestler finishing his career for Freedom was Steven Marquina at 119. One of the inspirational leaders for the eagles, Marquina was battling through a knee injury on day two and put out a valiant effort in his final matches as an eagle, taking sixth overall.

Also at 119, Loudoun County sophomore lost in triple overtime to eventual champion Bennett Payne of Fauquier and then, due to injury, had to sit out the third place match.

The region meet was also a source of redemption for several wrestlers who struggled at districts but were able to qualify for states such as Michael Hulcher of Briar Woods at 112 and Tarkan Martin of Broad Run at 125 -- both were fourth place at districts, just qualifying, and both wrestled well enough to take fourth at regionals.

Rea at 112 was third at districts and came away with the regional title. Two runner-ups from districts -- Akhil Gowda of Broad Run at 103 and Smith of Loudoun County at 119 -- also are moving on with 4th place finishes.

Michael Hosti of Freedom was third at 135 and teammate Tyler Young was fourth at 152.

(Feb. 15, 2011) - Stone Bridge High School 145-pound senior Pat Taylor has qualified for the VHSL AAA state wrestling meet this weekend at Robinson High School with a fourth place finish last weekend at the Northern Region meet.

Volleyball: Another Freedom Volleyball Player Headed to College Ranks as Flanigin Commits to Wingate University

South Riding (Feb. 15, 2011) - On the heels of the school's best volleyball season in history, Freedom High School has yet another athlete headed to the college ranks as senior Jenna Flanigin has verbally committed to play next year at Wingate University, one of the top NCAA Division II programs in the country.

Flanigin joins senior teammate Tori Kramer (Waynesburg) and junior teammate Kaitlyn LaMantia (North Carolina State) to make commitments.

The middle blocker for the VA Elite 18s club team helped Freedom secure a Region II runner-up finish and the Eagles first-ever trip to the state tournament.

North Carolina-based Wingate plays in the South Atlantic Conference and went 31-2 overall in 2010. The Bulldogs have lost only two matches in each of the last four seasons for a total record of 138-8 since the start of the 2007 season.

The Bulldogs have won five consecutive regular season and tournament titles in the conference, while making six consecutive NCAA Division II tournament appearances.

Wrestling: Stone Bridge Finishes Runner-up at Liberty District Meet

(Feb. 15, 2011) - Stone Bridge High School freshman Garrett Maged captured the Liberty District 112-pound title on Feb. 5 and helped the Bulldogs to a runner-up finish in the 8-team meet.

Volleyball: Broad Run Junior Mallory Brickerd Becomes Fifth Member of VA Elite 2012 Class to Commit Early

Ashburn (Feb. 15, 2011) - The VA Elite 17s club volleyball team needs one one more verbal commitment and they will be able to field an entire starting line-up of Class of 2012 athletes that will play at the NCAA Division I level as Broad Run's Mallory Brickerd has chosen William and Mary.

The 6-foot-1 outside hitter for both the Elite and the Spartans, will play for the Tribe in the Colonial Athletic Association beginning in the fall of 2012.

Brickerd joins VA Elite 17s club volleyball teammates: Freedom's Katilyn LaMantia (North Carolina State), Stone Bridge's Alex Heyn (Ohio State), Heritage's Kelsey Hrebenach (Maryland) and Madeira School's Breanna Atkinson (Duke).

Girls Basketball: Stone Bridge's Murielle Tiernan Named First Team All-Liberty District

(Feb. 15, 2011) - Stone Bridge High School sophomore Murielle Tiernan, who led the Bulldogs to a Liberty District regular-season title, was named first team all-district in a vote of the coaches.

Stone Bridge senior Cori Prince was named second team and Prince's sister, sophomore Nicole Prince, was named to the all-defensive team.
