Boys Basketball: Stone Bridge Coach Sonny Green Steps Down After 7 Seasons

Ashburn (Feb. 16, 2011) - Stone Bridge High School boys basketball coach Sonny Green confirmed Wednesday night that he has informed the administration that he is stepping down after seven seasons with the Bulldogs.

Green took over for Mark Alexander, now the Loudoun County boys varsity coach, in 2004-05 after Alexander was called to Active Duty. In his first season, Green was named the Dulles District Coach of the Year as the program had its first winning season and the Bulldogs advanced to the Region II tournament.

The next year the Bulldogs moved to the Liberty District where they have struggled, failing to advance out of the first round of the district tournament for six straight seasons. The Bulldogs finished 5-18 this season.

Green said he "needed a break" as the reason for resigning. He was the boys basketball coach with the third longest tenure behind Potomac Falls' Jeff Hawes and Loudoun Valley's Chad Dawson, whom Green played with in college and worked with as an assistant before taking over the Stone Bridge program.
