News: Next Level Performance to Offer Free Fitness Training Sessions

(June 12, 2012) - Next Level Performance is offering two free fitness training sessions in Ashburn for athletes ages 12 and up looking to take their performance to the next level.

The two free fitness training sessions are scheduled for Thursday June 14 fro 9 to 10:30 a.m. and Tuesday June 19 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Breezyhill fields in Ashburn. (Corner of Claiborne Parkway and Hay Road across the street from Stone Bridge High Schoool. Parking is located near the tennis courts and pool off of Hay).

State Champs! Woodgrove Girls Soccer, Softball Win AA Titles; Tuscarora Boys, Broad Run Girls Soccer Fall Just Shy

(June 9, 2012) - Woodgrove High School opened just two years ago in Purcellville and on Saturday the young school celebrated two state titles within hours as the girls soccer team defeated Dulles District rival Loudoun County, 3-0, to win the AA crown and then the Wolverines softball team blasted Broadway, 9-0, to take the state championship at Radford University.

The Tuscarora boys soccer team fought back from 2-0 and 3-1 deficits to tie Jamestown, 3-3, but fell on a late goal, 4-3 in the AA title game at Radford, and the Broad Run girls soccer team fell oh so shy of a fifth straight state title -- and a first at the AAA level -- when they fell to Cosby in penalty kicks, 3-1, after the two sides had battled to a scoreless standstill at Westfield High School after 100 agonizing minutes of regulation and overtime play.

(June 9, 2012) - Friday was almost a perfect day for Loudoun AA and AAA teams, especially on the soccer pitch, as local soccer teams were 4 for 4 in the VHSL state semifinals and overall 5 of 6 on the day in all sports.

Advancing to AA title games: Loudoun County and Woodgrove girls soccer; Tuscarora boys soccer; Woodgrove softball. Advancing to AAA title game: Broad Run girls soccer. Only Broad Run softball saw its season end.

State Semifinals: AA Clean Sweep as Woodgrove Softball; Loudoun County Girls, Tuscarora Boys, Woodgrove Girls Soccer All Win; AAA Broad Run Girls Soccer Wins

Radford (June 8, 2012) - The Loudoun soccer teams wore the away colors today at Radford University but they made themselves at home as they went 3 for 3 in the VHSL AA state semifinals. Over on the softball field, Woodgrove made it a clean sweep as they advanced as well to a state championship game. And the night ended with the Broad Run girls soccer team advancing to a fifth straight state title game, their first at the AAA level.

At 10 a.m., Woodgrove girls soccer started the Loudoun run with a 3-0 win over Blacksburg and at the same time the Woodgrove softball team was beating Abingdon, 3-1. Then the Loudoun County girls pulled out a dramatic 1-0 win over Jefferson Forest and finally, maybe the most shocking final of the day here, Tuscarora boys thumped state power Blacksburg, 4-1.

On Saturday, Loudoun will crown a state champion as Loudoun County and Woodgrove battle at 10 a.m. in a rematch of the Dulles District and Region II title games. All four of the Raiders losses this season have come to Woodgrove, a team that has won 22 straight games.

At noon then Tuscarora, like Woodgrove a 2nd-year schools, will play Jamestown in the AA boys soccer state title game.

At 1 p.m. Woodgrove softball, state runner-up in 2011 to Briar Woods, will face Broadway in a match-up of two teams that split a non-district doubleheader this season.

In AAA, Broad Run softball saw its great postseason run ended with a 10-2 loss to Cosby in the semifinals at Westfield High School. Broad Run girls soccer faces Deep Run in a semifinal at Westfield at 8 p.m. tonight.

The Spartans girls soccer, winners of four straight AA state titles, did not take the field until after 9 p.m. Friday but Broad Run put up an early Darbie Kelley penalty kick and that stood the test of the BR defense for a 1-0 win over Deep Run.

Broad Run plays Cosby at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Westfield for the AAA title.

VHSL State Championships: Six Loudoun Teams Play in Semifinals Friday

(June 8, 2012) - Six Loudoun teams -- Broad Run girls soccer and softball, Loudoun County girls soccer, Tuscarora boys soccer and Woodgrove girls soccer and softball -- will play Friday in the Virginia High School League state tournament semifinals.

A win would advance the teams to the finals with Broad Run in action at the AAA championships at Westfield High School in Fairfax County and the other four teams at Radford University.

Track and Field: Loudoun County Comes Within 2 Points of AA State TItle

Dulles District and Region II Champions Raiders cap stellar season with state runner-up finish

(June 7, 2012) - The Loudoun County High School boys track and field team fell just shy of claiming the AA VHSL state title last weekend, scoring just two points shy of champion E.C. Glass.

The Raiders finished with 48 points while Glass scored 50 with the state meet coming down to the final race as Loudoun County took third in the 4x400 meter realy with the quartet of junior Steven Graham, sophomore Nolan Graves, junior Patrick Joseph and senior Teddy Murphy turning in a 3:23.24 for a third place finish and six points.

That would have been enough for County to claim the crown but Glass shaved almost 90 seconds off their seed time to sneak into sixth place and score a crucial three points that turned out to be the difference. (It should also be noted that Glass picked up five points in the pole vault, an event that Loudoun athletes are not allowed to compete in). Woodgrove girls took fifth place.

Joseph had a double-title meet claiming the 800 meters with a 1:54.41 and then the 1600 meters with a 4:15.71. Graham won the 400 meters state title with a 49.01.

Heritage senior Marcus Finney capped his great prep career in style with wins in the 110 meter hurdles (state record 14.10) and 300 meter hurdles (38.53) as well as a fourth in the 100 meters (10.98). Raider Murphy was third in the 100 hurdles (14.57) and the 300 meter hurdles as well at 39.08.

(June 6, 2012) - Broad Run High School senior Erin Brady and freshman Caroline Kerns along with Freedom senior Mallory Ullrich have bee named first team Northwest Region in a vote of the coaches. 

Named to the second team were Freedom sophomore Taylor Gaunt and senior Rachel Ivey as well as Broad Run senior Dani Dangremond and junior Cassie Smith.

Forest Park's Annah Linberg was named the Player of the Year and Battlefield's Kevin Hilton took Coach of the Year honors.

Softball: Broad Run's Ed Steele Named Northwest Region Coach of the Year; Spartans Beller, Miller First Team

(June 6, 2012) - Broad Run High School softball coach Ed Steele, who has guided the Spartans to the state semifinals in their first season at the AAA level, has been named the 2012 Northwest Region Coach of the Year in a vote of the region's coaches. Spartan outfielders Frankie Beller and McKall Miller were also named first team.

News: Marty Newsom, Popular Co-Owner of APEX Gymnastics, Passes Away from Heart Attack at Age 42

Leesburg (June 6, 2012) - The Loudoun community suffered a great loss last night when Marty Newsom, popular co-owner of APEX Gymnastics, passed away from a heart attack at age 42.

Marty Newsom

Newsom, a former gymnast at the University of Wisconsin who went on to coach and judge the sport, co-founded APEX in 1997. Newsom was a standout at Herndon High School after moving to Northern Virginia from England his sophomore year. While in England he was top five in the country in his age group.

A memorial account is being set up for Apex scholarships so his family is asking that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to "APEX scholarship" in honor of "Marty Newsom". Woodgrove: Defense Helps Softball, Girls Soccer Advance to State Semifinals

Purcellville (June 5, 2012) – It was all about the defense Tuesday night as Woodgrove High School celebrated VHSL AA state quarterfinal wins in softball and girls soccer.

In softball, Woodgrove ended Culpeper’s cinderella run for a state title with a 3-0 victory. Wolverine senior
pitcher Allie Reid had a phenomenal performance as she struck out eight batters while only surrendering two hits.

The Woodgrove girls soccer team dominated play throughout the game against Grafton; however they needed extra time to advance to the next round with a 3-1 overtime victory. Ashley Bonner’s two overtime goals secured Woodgrove’s spot in the semifinal round.

Girls Soccer: Road Warriors! Broad Run, Loudoun County Advance to State Semifinals with Road Wins

(June 6, 2012) - These girls are Road Warriors! The Broad Run and Loudoun County high school girls soccer teams advanced to their respective VHSL state tournament semifinals with big quarterfinal wins Tuesday.

Broad Run (14-4-5) shocked highly-ranked Kellam (ranked No. 10 in the country by ESPN HS), 2-1, in the AAA state quarterfinals and Loudoun County (17-4-2) rolled over Tabb, 5-0, in the AA state quareterfinals.


Broad Run will face Deep Run, a 3-2 winner over Stone Bridge, in Friday's 8 p.m. state semifinal at Westfield High School. Cosby and Cox face each other in the other semifinal at 6 p.m.

Loudoun County will face Jefferson Forest, a 3-0 winner over Salem in a noon semifinal at Radford University. Woodgrove faces Blacksburg in the other semifinal at 10 a.m.

Softball: Broad Run Plays "Small Ball" to Advance to State Semifinals

Ashburn (June 6, 2012) - A clutch two-out hit put Broad Run High School in front, and a spectacular double play kept them there as the Spartans won their Virginia AAA state softball quarterfinal game 2-1 against Hickory June 5 in Ashburn.

Madison Small, the Spartans' sole starting freshman, delivered an RBI double for the go-ahead run in the sixth. In the seventh, third baseman Amanda Pugh protected the narrow margin, diving to snag a bunt and whirling to nip a Hickory runner retreating to second.

One out later, the Spartans were winners in their first ever Group AAA state tournament contest. Broad Run was a perennial AA power until moving up to AAA this school year.

Leesburg (June 6, 2012) - Just three days after claiming their first-ever region championship, the Tuscarora High School's boys soccer team conquered another of its lofty goals June 5. Junior Angel Ceron-Garcia netted a pair of early goals and freshman Sergio Resendiz tacked on two insurance goals as the host Huskies thumped Region I runner-up Tabb, 4-0, in the Virginia AA state quarterfinals.

The state tournament victory was the first for any athletic program at Tuscarora, a second-year school in Leesburg. The Huskies - who lost in the 2011 state quarterfinals on the road - improved to 20-2-2 in their second season, including a 7-0 mark in postseason play.

"It's a huge accomplishment for our school," Tuscarora coach Dave Gryder said before vocing his appreciation of the Huskies' boisterous home crowd. "With the crowd we had, it definitely brought the school together and definitely supported us."

Tuscarora will make its first trip to Radford University - the site of the state semifinals and final - just two wins shy of its ultimate goal. The Huskies will face state powerhouse Blacksburg (21-1) in the semifinals June 8 at 2 p.m.

Briar Woods: Softball Stopped at Poquoson; Boys Soccer Falls at Jamestown in State Quarterfinals

(June 6, 2012) - The Briar Woods High School softball team's run to a second straight state VHSL AA championship came to an end as Region I champion Poquoson used a one-out RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull out a dramatic 1-0 win over the visiting Falcons in the state quarterfinals Tuesday.

The game featured two of the top pitchers in the state in Briar Woods senior left-hander Macy Jones and Poquoson senior right-hander Maggie Tyler, and each held the other's offense in check most of the game before the Islanders finally broke through.

Stone Bridge: Not the Start or Finish Bulldogs Softball and Girls Soccer were Looking For

Ashburn (June 6, 2012) - On paper it should have been a brilliant evening for Stone Bridge High School's softball and girls soccer teams as the two Northern Region champions hosted Central Region runner-ups in VHSL state quarterfinals Tuesday.

Things, however, didn't go exactly as planned for the two programs which came into the big night with just four combined defeats in 46 total contests.

For starters, the girls soccer game actually kicked off a few minutes early and by the time some Bulldog fans made their way into the stadium it was already 1-0 Deep Run with a shocking goal just 86 seconds into the contest. Over at the softball field, things were delayed with a late arrival of the Patrick Henry-Ashland squad and after the first pitch, Stone Bridge squandered a first inning opportunity that set the tone for the game.

Less than two hours later, it was all over as Patrick Henry (22-2) closed out a 4-0 shutout over Stone Bridge (24-3) softball, and then down on the soccer field, Ashley Herndon's late goal with 20 seconds left only made the final score a little more palatable, as the Bulldogs (16-3-2) fell to the Wildcats (19-3), 3-2.

Richmond (June 6, 2012) - Governor Bob McDonnell announced today that the Washington Redskins will retain its corporate headquarters in the Commonwealth and will continue its investment to expand and improve the training facility in Loudoun County. In addition, the Redskins will begin working with the City of Richmond to identify a suitable training camp site to hold summer practice in Richmond, starting in 2013.
