Youth Sports - AAU Basketball Tryouts Scheduled

(Mar. 8, 2011) - AAU basketball tryouts are coming up around the county starting with the FLEXX All Stars program which will hold tryouts tonight, March 8, from 8 to 9:30 p.m. for 11U (5th grade) and 10U (4th grade) boys at the FLEXX Sports and Entertainment Center in Lansdowne.

A second tryout for 10U will be held Wed. March 9 from 5 to 6 p.m. and a second tryout for 11U will be held Thurs. March 10 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Visit the FLEXX All Stars website or follow them on Facebook.

News: Flood Watch for Wednesday Evening through Thursday Evening

(Mar. 8, 2011) - A flood watch is now in effect for the Loudoun area from Wednesday evening through Thursday evening. The flood watch includes portions of Eastern Maryland and Northern Virginia, east of the Blue Ridge and Catoctin mountains.

(Mar. 7, 2011) - Some teams have bandwagons ... the Loudoun County High School girls basketball team apparently has a Batts-mobile as the Raiders have zoomed into the VHSL Division 4 state semifinals on a 20-game winning streak steered by high-scoring senior Brittany Batts.

For the Potomac Falls High School boys basketball team this season hasn't been so much about bandwagons as it has been an epic quest for a second straight state title and on Saturday the Legend of Lukas Mihailovich grew a bit taller with a breath-taking buzzer beater by the 6-foot Panther senior leader.

It is a legend that was forged his junior year when Mihailovich opened December with a school-record 50 points and halfcourt buzzer beater in a triple overtime win and finished things in March with an incredibly clutch state playoffs, averaging 26 points a game, including 33 in the double overtime state finals as the Panthers brought back the first boys basketball state title in history to Loudoun.

Batts and Mihailovich, two standout seniors, both still looking for the right college basketball offers, but first they are concentrating on securing their second state title rings -- the Raiders won the title in 2009 when Batts started as a sophomore.

These two clutch performers were both in the spotlight Saturday in the Division 4 state quarterfinals at Robinson High School but they helped their teams into the semifinals in entirely different fashions.

(Mar. 6, 2011) - Gary Sousa was sure that the game-winning attempt would come on Tabb's end as they had the ball with 16 seconds left Saturday against Potomac Falls and the game tied. But the buzzer beater came on the Panther end as an errant pass was scooped up by Lukas Mihailovich and Sousa has the sequence captured here (click on any photo to view the full gallery!):

With Tabb making an ill-advised pass back towards halfcourt, Potomac Falls High School senior Lukas Mihailovich raced after the loose ball, won a close battle, and then swooped in for a game-winning layin as time expired to give the Panthers a 46-44 VHSL Division 4 boys basketball state quarterfinal win over Tabb. Basketball: Buzzer Beater Sends Potomac Falls Boys to State Semifinals; Loudoun County Girls Cruise into Final Four

(Mar. 5, 2011) - Senior Lukas Mihailovich's steal and layin with less than two seconds left Saturday gave the Potomac Falls High School boys a dramatic, 46-44, come-from-behind win over Tabb in the VHSL Division 4 state quarterfinals at Robinson High School. The defending state champion Panthers trailed by 13 points in the second half before fighting back into the contest.

The Loudoun County High School girls prevailed over a scrappy Eastern View squad, 57-41, in their VHSL Division 4 state quarterfinal as the Raiders seek their second state title in three years. Senior Brittany Batts scores 22 of her 28 points in the second half of the win and, according to Loudoun Times-Mirror sports editor Carl Lukat's super stat sheet, junior Casey Cummings hauled down 20 rebounds.

Loudoun County and Potomac Falls will play back-to-back again, this time on Wednesday in the state semifinals at VCU's Siegel Center in Richmond with the Raiders facing the winner of Turner Ashby-Hidden Valley at 10:30 a.m. and the Panthers taking on Christianshburg, a 73-54 winner Saturday over E.C. Glass, at 12:15 p.m.

Basketball: Loudoun County Girls, Potomac Falls Boys One Game Away from Final Four

(Mar. 5, 2011) - The Loudoun County High School girls and Potomac Falls High School boys basketball teams will take to the court today in VHSL Division 4 state quarterfinal action at Robinson High School in Fairfax. The Raider girls play Eastern View at 2:30 p.m. and the Panther boys play Tabb at 4:30 p.m.

A win advances the teams to the Final Four next week at VCU's Siegel Center in Richmond.

Football: Briar Woods Running Back Michael Brownlee to Play at Shepherd

Ashburn (Mar. 4, 2011) - Briar Woods High School senior running back Michael Brownlee, who bounced back from an injury that kept him out of most of the regular season to lead the Falcons to the VHSL Division 4 state title, has been accepted as a walkon at Shepherd University next year.

The 5-foot-7, 190-pounder broke his foot on the first carry of the season in August and didn't return until fulltime until November but seemed to get stronger as the playoffs wore on and he had an incredible state title game with 183 yards rushing on just 14 carries and TD runs of 37, 1 44 and 34 yards as the Falcons erased a 14-0 deficit to win 41-21.

Brownlee finished with 984 yards on the shortened season on 145 attempts and 14 TDs.

Football: Stone Bridge's Ben Branower to Play at Historic McDaniel College

Ashburn (Mar. 4, 2011) - Stone Bridge High School senior captain and linebacker Ben Branower will play football next year at NCAA Division III McDaniel College in Westminster, Md.

Branower, an all-Liberty District linebacker, helped the Bulldogs to a perfect 10-0 regular season and 14-1 overall record with a second straight trip to the VHSL Division 5 state title game.

The Green Terrors play in the Centennial Conference where they went 4-5 in the fall and 5-5 overall. The historic liberal arts college of 1,700 students opened in 1867 as Western Maryland College and started playing football in 1891.

Branower will join another Loudoun player at McDaniel, Loudoun County grad Tim McLister was a sophomore DB in the fall, combining for 29 tackles.

Girls Soccer: Dominion Junior Maria "Mo" Pinkston to Play at NCAA Division I VCU Starting in 2012

Sterling (Mar. 4, 2011) – Dominion High School junior Maria “Mo” Pinkston, an All-Dulles District midfielder/forward and leading scorer for the Titans, has verbally committed to play soccer in 2012 at NCAA Division I Virginia Commonwealth University.

“Mo is a dynamic force to be reckoned with,” said Dominion head coach Kelly Beauchamp Payne. “She is a creative attacker who is able to break down another team's defense and find the back of the net. Her leadership and work rate combined with her talent make her a triple threat to any soccer program. I am excited to watch her join forces with the VCU women's soccer program ... they are lucky to have such a player.”

Pinkston led Dominion the past two years in both scoring and assists and was named team Most Valuable Player both years. She is also a standout midfielder on the top 10 nationally-ranked VSA Heat club soccer team.

“It only took me a few hours with Coach Sahaydak to know that VCU is where I belong,” said Pinkston. “The atmosphere at VCU is friendly, yet competitive. I think they are a team on the rise.”

VCU is led by co-head coaches Tiffany Roberts-Sahaydak and Tim Sahaydak, a husband and wife team entering their fifth year at the school. The two coaches bring an expectation of success to the program, both having played at the highest levels in their soccer careers.

Tiffany played collegiately at North Carolina, winning four ACC titles and two national titles. She went on to play on the U.S. National Team, winning an Olympic gold medal and a World Cup championship. Tim also played at North Carolina and on the U18 and U20 U.S. National Teams. He played professionally for the MLS Columbus Crew, Miami Fusion, FC Dallas and DC United.

Pinkston considered Missouri, West Virginia, George Mason and Old Dominion before choosing Virginia Commonwealth.

“I am really looking forward to playing for Tiffany and Tim," said Pinkston. "VCU is a very young team, and by the time I get there I expect them to be in contention for the Colonial Athletic Association championship, as well as the NCAA tournament.”

College Signing: Loudoun Valley Golfer Scott Davidson to Tee it Up at Wilmington University

Purcellville (Mar. 3, 2011) - Loudoun Valley High School senior all-state golfer Scott Davidson has accepted a full ride scholarship to tee it up next year at NCAA Division II Wilmington University in Delaware.

Davidson, first team all-district, all-region and all-state his senior year, helped the Vikings to four consecutive state tournament trips during his tenure and Valley captured the Cedar Run District championship three times and was runner-up once, won the district tournament twice and captured the Northwest Region tournament three times with one runner-up finish.

A district medalist his freshman year, Davidson had a 75.9 18-hole average his sophomore year and won the Cheers Invitational with a 71. As a junior he set the school's 9-hole record with a 4-under par 30. And his senior year he was fourth in the state with a 5-under par two-day total, captured the Northwest Region individual championship a nd was runner-up in the Cedar Run. His 18-hole average in the fall was 72.3 and his 9-hole average was 35.5.

Swim: Broad Run's Sarman Grabs Gold at AA State Meet; Briar Woods Girls Place Third as Team

(Mar. 3, 2011) - Broad Run High School senior Mark Sarman finished his brilliant Spartan career last weekend with a state title swim of 50.12 in the 100-yard fly as well as a runner-up finish in the 200 IM at the VHSL AA state meet in Christiansburg.

"Mark was shooting for a meet record (in the 100 fly), which he missed by .2 sec. Mark has had a great swimming career at Broad Run," said Spartan coach Beverly Kelley. "I'm excited to see how well he will do at Georgia Tech -- he keeps getting better.

The Briar Woods High School girls showed great depth to finish third overall with 173 points behind winner Western Albemarle (217) and runner-up Hidden Valley (211). On the boys side, Freedom was eighth with 95 points and Broad Run, which lost valuable points while being disqualified in a relay race which the Spartans had tied for the top time in prelims, took ninth with 89.

The Falcons girls had two strong relay finishes with a second in the 400 free and a third in the 200 medley. Sisters Alli and Kristin Haufler were in on both relays as well as a pair of top eight finishes for both.

Alli Haufler was second in the 100 fly (56.63) and third in the 200 free (1:54.92). Kristin Haufler was sixth in the 100 free (54.63) and tied for seventh in the 50 free (25.23) with teammate Caleigh Hensley.

Briar Woods girls took 3rd in the AA State Meet

Caitlyn Brown and Hensley were on the 400 free relay with the Haufler's and Hensley and Eric Comm swam on the 200 medley team. Also for Briar Woods, Lizzie Mittan was eighth in the 500 free (5:20.39).

Other local girls in the top eight included Freedom's Stephanie Clarke (5th in 100 back, 1:00.52) and Tuscarora's Amanda Presgraves (5th in 100 breast, 1:06.95).

On the boys side, Briar Woods' Matthew Nielsen had a pair of fourth place finishes in the 500 free (4:41.51) and 100 breast (1:00.22). Broad Run's Jacob Leidy took fifth in the 100 fly (52.55) and seventh in the 100 back (54.71).

The Freedom boys had two strong relays with a fourth in the 200 free and a fifth in the 200 medley. Eagle Andrew Smith was eighth in the 100 breast (1:02.81).

Dominion's Aidan O'Hara was seventh in the 500 free (4:59.52).

In the final relay of the night, the 400 free, the Broad Run boys took 6th and Briar Woods was eighth.

Girls Soccer: Stone Bridge's Emily Fredrikson and Julia Harmison Hold College Signing Ceremony

(Mar. 2, 2011) - The defending AAA state champion Stone Bridge High School girls soccer team celebrated two seniors heading to the college ranks next year as Emily Fredrikson and Julia Harmison held signing ceremonies Tuesday. Fredrikson, a key defender for the Bulldogs, will play next year at William and Mary and Harmison, the Bulldogs starting keeper, will play at Carnegie Mellon.

Emily Fredrikson

Emily started playing soccer at a young age. She is a member of the McLean Azul, the 2009 Virginia State Champions coached by Jac Cicala. Prior to playing for the Azul, she was with the Loudoun Explosion. She was a member of the Virginia State ODP team for several years and was a Region One pool player in 2008.

At Stone Bridge High School, Emily is a four year varsity defender. As a part of the State Championship team last season, Emily earned First Team All Liberty District, First Team All Northern Region, and First Team All State (AAA) honors.

As a student-athlete, Emily maintains a 4.4 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society. Emily is a scholarship athlete attending William & Mary next fall.

Julia Harmison

Julia will be headed to Pittsburgh this fall to play soccer at Carnegie Mellon. She is a three-year varsity starter for Stone Bridge High School. As a goalkeeper, Julia has the school record for highest number of shutouts in a season (13) and has earned First Team All Liberty District honors.

In addition to high school soccer, Julia is the starting keeper for the Herndon RFC Arsenal. She is also an exceptional student-athlete and member of the National Honor Society.

Boys Basketball: Middleburg Academy to Host First State Tournament Game in School History

(Mar. 1, 2011) - The Middleburg Academy boys basketball program will host its first ever state tournament game when the 24-4 Dragons take to the court on Wednesday, March 2nd at 6:30 p.m.

Middleburg, ranked No. 3 in the state, will play the winner of No. 6 Walsinham Academy (21-8) vs. No. 11 Islae of Wight Academy (20-8).

The winner of Wednesday's contest will advance to the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Final Four to be played on the campus of Virginia State University in Petersburg on Friday, March 4 at 5:15 p.m. The VISAA state championship game is scheduled for Saturday, March 5 at 3:30 p.m.

Football: Briar Woods Linebacker DeVontae O'Bannion to Play at NCAA Division II Saint Augustine's

Ashburn (Mar. 1, 2011) - Briar Woods High School all-state senior linebacker DeVontae O'Bainnion has accepted a full grant in aid to play football next year at Saint Augustine's College in Raleigh, N.C.

The Division II college was 9-2 last season. O'Bannion helped the Falcons win the school's first ever state title in December.
