Football: Woodgrove Celebrates Riley Johnson's Commitment to McDaniel College

Purcellville (May 4, 2012) - The Woodgrove High School football program celebrated the college commitment of senior Riley Johnson Thursday afternoon. Johnson will play next year at NCAA Div III McDaniel College located in Westminster, MD.

Purcellville (May 1, 2012) - Riley Johnson, a senior football player at Woodgrove High School, has committed to play football next year at NCAA Div III McDaniel College located in Westminster, MD.

Johnson was a captain and a two-way starter on the offensive and defensive lines for the 2012 Wolverines. Johnson also maintains a 3.72 GPA.

A commitment ceremony will be held at the Woodgrove HS Library on May 3, 2012 at 4:30 PM.

Ashburn (Apr. 29, 2011) - The Stone Bridge High School football program threw a big celebration Wednesday to recognize seven football players from the talented Class of 2011 that are headed for the college ranks.

The seven players honored before teammates, coaches, family and friends included: Alex Mohkiber (Catholic), Kyle Gouveia (James Madison), Brian Rody (Virginia Tech), Dexter Rogers (Hampton), James Johnson (Christopher Newport), Ben Branower (McDaniel) and Marcus Harris (College of the Canyons Junior College).

Bulldog head coach Mickey Thompson had nice things to say about the players that as a group made back-to-back state title appearances. In particular he said that James Madison was getting a bargain in Gouveia, one of the top players in the state at linebacker but overlooked by larger schools because of his size. Thompson also liked the chances of Harris, one of the top running backs in the state, to be able to transition from his California junior college to a top tier 4-year program.

Rody was the Bulldogs starting quarterback and will be a preferred walk-on at Tech. Mohkiber and Johnson were key cogs on the Bulldog offensive line with Johnson expected to play D-line in college. Branower at linebacker and Rogers at DB were two reasons that the Bulldogs defense allowed only an average of six points per game while riding a 14-game winning into a title rematch with Phoebus.

Thursday's signings give Stone Bridge 11 from the Class of 2011 to play in college with early signees: Rob Burns (Virginia), John Cheritis (Washington and Lee), Calvin Hollenhorst (Coastal Carolina) and Spenser Rositano (Boston College).

Football: Stone Bridge's Ben Branower to Play at Historic McDaniel College

Ashburn (Mar. 4, 2011) - Stone Bridge High School senior captain and linebacker Ben Branower will play football next year at NCAA Division III McDaniel College in Westminster, Md.

Branower, an all-Liberty District linebacker, helped the Bulldogs to a perfect 10-0 regular season and 14-1 overall record with a second straight trip to the VHSL Division 5 state title game.

The Green Terrors play in the Centennial Conference where they went 4-5 in the fall and 5-5 overall. The historic liberal arts college of 1,700 students opened in 1867 as Western Maryland College and started playing football in 1891.

Branower will join another Loudoun player at McDaniel, Loudoun County grad Tim McLister was a sophomore DB in the fall, combining for 29 tackles.
