(March 29, 2012) - Cheers Sports and VivaLoudoun announced today their Athletes of the Month for February 2012.
Each month, VivaLoudoun.com editor Dan Sousa selects the top high school athletes from across Loudoun and they are invited to a photo shoot. The February 2012 honorees met at Lifetime Fitness in Ashburn on Sunday, March 25.
"This was an impressive group selected for the final month of the winter sports season as many Loudoun teams and athletes had clutch performances on the regional and state levels," said Sousa.

Once again, every school in the county represented but Park View. Seriously? Not all good athletes play on great teams

But ... the AOM picks, are not about "good" athletes ... with 12 high schools and six sports we have hundreds and hundreds of good athletes in the county ... but only 42 were selected and the criteria was for performances in February which basically covered district, regional and state postseason. Park View, unfortunately, did not have enough advancement in postseason in the sports to warrant any selections.
ReplyDeleteFor gymnastics and boys swimming they had no advancement in the month. In girls swimming and wrestling they have had some athletes make it but they didn't advance as far in state competition as those picked -- and others not picked. Neither hoops team posted a postseason victory. Ryan McCarter, Park View's brilliant 4-year basketball standout would have been the Pats best hope to repeat (he was already selected this season) but he just didn't get enough court time in the month of February.
We at Viva Loudoun are about fairness and while it may seem unfair to a PV fan to not have any Patriots selected, we would find it unfair to leave off a deserving athlete at another school just to hit some sort of quota system. This process will only get more difficult as we add a 13th high school next year.
In the past we had another honor called Student Athlete of the Month which featured one student athlete from each of the school's who was a good varsity player, great teammate, great in the classroom and great in the community. We loved this program but we have not found a sponsor to start it back up. Hopefully for 2012-13 we can get this going. Not only is it great to recognize some of the great kids that aren't all-starts it would also ensure a pick from each high school in those lean months for some ...
