News: VHSL Wells Fargo Cup Winter Athletics Standings Announced

Charlottesville (March 28, 2012) - Oakton, Christiansburg and Galax climbed to the top of the Group AAA, AA, and Group A standings following the winter sports season. All three schools are aiming to win a first cup.

The Wells Fargo Cup recognizes the League’s state champions of state champions, the school in each group that performs best in state-level competition across all sports.

Locally, Briar Woods is 12th in AA with Potomac (16th) and Loudoun County (20th) also in the Top 20. Complete standings for A, AA and AAA.


The winner of the cup, sponsored by Wells Fargo, is determined by a point system based on performance in state championship events. Points are awarded for all sanctioned sports in the following manner: first place, 50; second place, 45; third place, 40; fourth place, 35; fifth place, 30; sixth place, 25; seventh place, 20; eighth place, 15. If there are fewer than eight schools from a classification in the event, only those schools which are represented are eligible to receive points.

In the event of a tie, the schools receive an equal number of points based on the number of schools that tie and the number of schools that finish higher in the standings. For example, the girls basketball quarterfinal losers equally divide the points for fifth through eighth place (22.5 points each), while semifinal losers split third and fourth place (37.5 points).

Schools earned points from their performance in the VHSL winter sports playoffs in boys and girls basketball and wrestling (AAA, AA and A), gymnastics (AAA girls) and indoor track and swimming (AAA and AA boys and girls).

Schools that earn recognition in the Wells Fargo Sportsmanship program, determined following the completion of all competition for the year, receive 50 points each.

Galax, second in the fall standings, scored 87.5 winter points claiming a boys Division 1 basketball title and a girls basketball final four appearance for a grand total of 220 points, while George Mason (195), third after the fall season, picked up 95 points with a girls Division 1 basketball title and a boys runner-up finish in basketball. Wilson Memorial (147.5) went from first to third place after the winter sports season. Rounding out the top five in Group A is Manassas Park (117.5) in fourth place while East Rockingham and Strasburg finished the winter season tied for fifth with 95 points.

Christiansburg, seventh in the fall standings, had a successful winter season winning state titles in boys Division 4 basketball and wrestling; and earning points in girls and boys indoor track to take the lead with a total of 250 points. Grafton (237.5), tied for third after the fall season, also had a strong winter after a runner-up finish in boys Division 4 basketball and placing third in girls swimming; and scoring in girls indoor track. Cave Spring remained in third place after the winter season with 232.5 points with a boys Division 3 runner-up finish in basketball and earning points in girls swimming and indoor track. Tabb (227.5) jumped to fourth place on the strength of a state title in boys swimming to go along with a third place finish in girls indoor track and a fourth place finish in girls swimming. Western Albemarle (212.5), first after the fall standings, rounds out the top five.

Oakton (235), tied for sixth after the fall Group AAA standings, gained the top spot after winning state titles in girls basketball and girls swimming, while earning runner-up points in boys swimming and additional points in boys indoor track. Frank W. Cox (167.5) jumped from 10th place to second. The Falcons earned 100 winter points with state championships in boys swimming and gymnastics. South County (145) went from 5th place to third place thanks to a third place finish in girls indoor track while earning points in boys swimming. Stafford (140), first after the fall season, slipped into fourth in the standings after earning winter points in gymnastics. Floyd E. Kellam completed the top five with 130 points thanks to a fourth place finish in gymnastics and a seventh place finish in wrestling.

Final 2011-12 results will be released in June after the spring championships have concluded.
