(March 12, 2012) - Much has happened since Dr. Hatrick proposed his budget in early January. As LEA does every year, we have worked tirelessly to keep members and other budget stakeholders informed throughout the process — we do this so you will be informed and will know what you can do in order to be heard.


A BIG THANK YOU goes to those who have already attended or spoken at School Board (SB) or Board of Supervisors (BOS) meetings and/or have emailed these Boards. It is critical that both bodies hear your input—even when you believe the decisions have already been made. Silence makes it too easy for the Board to make decisions that may not be in the best interest of LCPS programs, students and employees.

While as the LEA President I speak on behalf of our entire membership, my single voice and presence at meetings/hearings becomes even more powerful for our common interests when you also show up and speak up. Let me know which meeting you plan to attend and I will save a seat for you. Remember that LEA is always willing to review your speaking/email remarks and offer possible suggestions, if needed.

At this time the SB adopted budget is in the hands of the BOS. Important items regarding the SB proposed budget can be found in the electronic version of this newsletter located at www.leaweteach.org.

The BOS is currently conducting budget work sessions, which are public meetings. YOUR input is key. Continue to email the BOS (loudounbudget@loudoun.gov) and speak during public input regarding the funding you believe LCPS must receive. Public input is scheduled for two Tuesdays each month—details are here: http://www.loudoun.gov/Default.aspx?tabid=1021.

In the midst of all that demands our attention, advocating for LCPS’s students, employees and our school system as a whole should not and cannot fall by the wayside.

Know that I am always willing to speak with you via phone or in person regarding what is going on currently as well as to help empower you to stand up and be heard.
