(June 30, 2011) - Four years ago Broad Run’s Whitney Church and Ellie Zoepfl were freshmen rooming together at the VHSL AA girls soccer state finals wondering what the title game would bring the next day at Radford University. The next day it was Zoepfl scoring the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Courtland.
For Church and Zoepfl and the Spartans it was just the start of four-year run at Radford as they have remained the top team in the state for their entire high school careers, capped by a 1-0 win over Blacksburg in the 2011 finals in June.

VivaLoudoun High School Sports Year in Review: Winter 2010-11

(June 29, 2011) - The Potomac Falls boys basketball team not only repeated their Division 4 state title but the Panthers did it once again in dramatic fashion. In 2009-10 the Panthers became the first Loudoun boys team to ever capture a state hoops championship with a double overtime win in the finals and in March the Panthers repeated with Pete Simoneau’s 3-pointer giving them the 58-55 win over Hidden Valley with five seconds left.
It was expected that the Panthers would be good with all five starters returning and a 10-member senior class and they made good on that promise with a magical 30-1 season behind the play of senior Lukas Mihailovich and 6-foot-7 junior Greg Graves.

(June 28, 2011) - Good-naturally called the “Backyard Brawl” the football rivalry between Ashburn neighbors Briar Woods and Broad Run was the hardest ticket in town as a standing room only crowd saw the two teams tangle twice at Briar Woods in the fall – with the Falcons stopping the visiting Spartans 33-game winning streak with a 20-13 win in the regular season and then a thrilling 24-21 win in the Region II Division 4 finals.
For Broad Run (11-2) it was the Spartans only two losses of the season under first-year coach Matt Griffis, who left powerhouse Stone Bridge as offensive coordinator to take over the Broad Run reigns after Mike Burnett departed on the heels of back-to-back state titles to start the new Tuscarora program in Leesburg.

Consider this: these talented seniors formed the nucleus for an amazing 14 Virginia High School League state title captured in their final two years, including six in 2010-11.

News: Area Elementary School Kids Get Mini-Combine Workout with Redskins Alumni
(June 26, 2011) - Some 50 students from five Sterling elementary schools were part of a group of kids that were put through a mini-combine workout at Redskins Park and run by Redskins alumni.
The event was hosted by the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation and the Redskins Kids Club and was part of the Play 60 program.
Redskins alumni that participated included Del Cowsette,Troy Drake, Phil Dubois, Darryl Grant, Frank Grant, David Harbour, Lemar Marshall, and Mark Stock, along with Redskins Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Ray Wright.
A total of 100 students were hosted including 50 Redskins Kids Club members. They were coached through a variety of physical fitness and combine-like drills by Washington Redskins alumni and Redskins Head Strength and Conditioning Coach. All kids participating in the mini-combine received a Play 60 tee shirt, wristband, and eye black.
The Play 60 Mini-Combine is just one of the health and wellness programs the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation engages in throughout the year. Other initiatives include the Play 60 Challenge, Fields for Tomorrow, and the donation of Redskins Youth Fitness Zones. These initiatives are all part of the Redskins commitment to the fight against childhood obesity, which encourages young fans to be active for at least 60 minutes a day.

Track and Field: Broad Run's Jonathan Russell Turns in 5th Fastest 400 Meter Hurdle Time in Nation at New Balance Outdoors Nationals
(June 25, 2011) - It seems that Broad Run High School rising senior Jonathan Russell was just getting warmed up at the VHSL state championships earlier this month as the talented hurdler turned in the fifth fastest 400 meter hurdles time in the nation with a 52.38 at the New Balance Outdoors Nationals in Greensboro, N.C. last weekend.
Russell captured the slower section with that time and finished fourth at the meet for All-American honors. His time is tops in Virginia this year.
Next up for Russell is the World Youth trials this coming Tuesday and Wednesday in Myrtle Beach, S.C. During the first two days of the championships 16- and 17- year-olds that have met qualifying standards will participate in the World Youth Track and Field Trials. Winners of these events will be considered for selection to the 2011 USA World Youth Team and will leave Myrtle Beach immediately for the IAAF World Youth Championships in Lille, France.
The 2011 World Youth Championship is held in Lille, France taking place July 6-10, 2011.
Football: Stanford Joins Growing List of Teams Offering Stone Bridge QB Burns
(June 25, 2011) - Stone Bridge High School rising junior Ryan Burns has picked up another offer as Stanford has verbally offered the talented rising junior after he attended their camp. Earlier Burns picked up an offer from University of Virginia coach Mike London after participating in their 7x7 camp over the weekend.
Before his sophomore year, he picked up an offer from Boston College. He has been named as one of the "35 to Watch For in 2013" by the 2011 Sporting News College Football Magazine. Burns is one of six quarterbacks listed in the nationwide list.

Cheers Sports and VivaLoudoun Athletes of the Month: State Track Special
Photo shoot held at Lifetime Fitness in Ashburn.
Ashburn (June 25, 2011) - Cheers Sports and VivaLoudoun.com released today their Athletes of the Month selections for a special state track champions photo shoot. The group met at Lifetime Fitness in Ashburn on June 12 for a photo shoot along with the May and June 2011 groups which have already been released.
Each month VivaLoudoun editor Dan Sousa selects the top athletes from across Loudoun's public and private high schools for the Cheers Sports Athletes of the Month program. For this special shoot, 10 athletes were chosen from four different high schools.

Girls Basketball: Freedom's All-Time Leading Scorer Dionna Scott Heads to Winston-Salem State
South Riding (June 23, 2011) - Dionna Scott, Freedom High School's all-time leader in points scored, steals and assists, is heading to Winston-Salem State University after leading the Eagles to two state titles in her prep career.Scott finished with 1,752 points along with 282 steals and 211 assists and helped Freedom win a VHSL Division 3 state title in 2008-09 and a Division 4 state title in 2009-10.
“It was a pleasure having the opportunity to coach Dionna over her entire high school career," said Freedom girls coach Joe Crawford. "Her dedication on the court and in the classroom enabled her to grow into a well rounded young lady. She will be missed by all, but I’m really grateful that she has the opportunity to further her education and basketball career at such a fine university.”
Winston-Salem State is a NCAA Division II school of 6,442 and plays in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
“We are very excited to have a player like Dionna Scoot join our program here at Winston-Salem State University," said WSSU women's basketball head coach Stephen Joyner, Jr. "As we build this program to be the best in the CIAA and Division II our first task was to recruit young ladies that are well rounded people as well as well as basketball players. Dionna has shown over her high school career that she is willing to go above and beyond both on the court and in the classroom. I look forward to four great years and many more records for this young lady.”

News: Wachovia Cup for Athletics Winners Announced by VHSL: Western Branch, Hidden Valley and Radford Win
Charlottesville (June 23, 2011) - Western Branch, Hidden Valley and Radford claim the top spots in VHSL athletic competition for the 2010-11 school year, winning the coveted Wachovia Cup for Group AAA, AA and A. In Group AAA, Western Branch won its first Cup title, while in Group AA Hidden Valley won for the second time, and in Group A Radford claimed its second straight Cup.
Loudoun had five AA schools finish in the top 20: Loudoun County (8th), Briar Woods (9th), Broad Run (11th), Potomac Falls (13th) and Woodgrove (tied 19th).

Field Hockey: Girls Invited to Thursday Night Drop-In Sessions at Foxcroft Starting July 14
(June 22, 2011) - “Thursday Nights Field Hockey,” a fun, drop-in opportunity for girls entering 7th grade and up to learn and play the game, will be offered at Foxcroft School weekly, beginning Thursday, July 14, Athletic Director Michelle Woodruff announced recently. All girls interested in playing field hockey, regardless of skill level, are welcome to come to once, twice or every week through Aug. 18.

Calabria said the economic situation today is much as it was when he graduated from George Mason in 1991.

Cheers Sports and VivaLoudoun Athletes of the Month for June 2011
Photo shoot held at Lifetime Fitness in Ashburn.
Ashburn (June 21, 2011) - Cheers Sports and VivaLoudoun.com released today their Athletes of the Month selections for June 2011. The June 2011 honorees met at Lifetime Fitness in Ashburn on June 12 for a double photo shoot along with the May 2011 group which was released last week.
Each month VivaLoudoun editor Dan Sousa selects the top athletes from across Loudoun's public and private high schools for the Cheers Sports Athletes of the Month program. For June 2011, a total of just three to four athletes per each of the 10 spring sports (baseball/softball, boys and girls lacrosse, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls tennis, boys and girls track and field) were selected with the 38 athletes coming from 11 different high schools.

Softball: Broad Run Grad Powell Becomes First Badger to Make 1st Team All-Big Ten Since 2002
(June 20, 2011) - Broad Run High School grad Karla Powell, returning nicely from shoulder surgery that ended her sophomore season, became the first University of Wisconsin softball player to make first team All-Big Ten since 2002.
Powell, limited in the field due to the injury, was selected as a Designated Player after leading the Badgers in home runs, doubles, slugging percentage and walks. More on her selection to the Big Ten team.
