Wrestling: Freedom Put to the Challenge Tonight in the VivaLoudoun and Cheers Sports Valley Duals

(Jan. 21, 2011) - The Freedom High School wrestling team, with aspirations of challenging at the AA state tournament and coming off a big duals tournament win at home last week, will be put to the test tonight in a tough evening of match-ups at the VivaLoudoun and Cheers Sports Valley Duals.

The Eagles open the tournament at Loudoun Valley High School with a 4 p.m. match against AAA power Westfield, ranked No. 6 by the Washington Post in the Metro Area, and then at 5:30 p.m. Freedom takes on Maryland force Urbana, a team that made their state duals Final Four last year. After a well-deserved bye, the Eagles finishing the grueling evening with an 8:30 p.m. match-up with another AAA heavyweight, Forest Park, a squad ranked No. 4 by the Washington Post.

Freedom enters tonight with momentum after edging Region II rival Millbrook last week in the finals of the third annual Freedom Duals (called Brookfield Duals), 33-30.

Cheers Sports and VivaLoudoun Athletes of the Month for December 2010

Ashburn (Jan. 20, 2011) - Cheers Sports and VivaLoudoun.com released today their first Athletes of the Month selections for the 2010-11 winter sports season. The December 2010 honorees met at Lifetime Fitness in Ashburn on Jan. 16 for a photo shoot.

Each month VivaLoudoun editor Dan Sousa selects the top athletes from across Loudoun's 12 public high schools for the Cheers Sports Athletes of the Month program. For December 2010, a total of just five athletes per each of the six winter sports (boys basketball, girls basketball, gymnastics, wrestling, boys swim, girls swim) were selected with the 30 athletes coming from 11 different high schools.

"We had amazing participation for the photo shoot this month with 24 out of 30 athletes able to make the shoot at Lifetime Fitness," said VivaLoudoun editor and founder Dan Sousa.

Wrestling: VivaLoudoun.com and Cheers Sports Valley Duals to Feature Top-Notch Field

(Jan. 20, 2011) - The two-day VivaLoudoun.com and Cheers Sports Valley Duals opens Friday with a top-notch field of 14 teams that includes some of the top high school teams from Virginia, Maryland and West Virginia wrestling on six mats at Loudoun Valley High School.

Forest Park and Westfield, both ranked in the Washington Post Top 10, highlight the field along with Loudoun's top team -- Freedom, which is fighting to break into that elite ranking. The Eagles will get there chance to prove themselves right away as they open the first round with a 4 p.m. match with Westfield.

The field also includes four other local teams -- host Loudoun Valley, Potomac Falls, Broad Run and Heritage. From Maryland, two teams that made their state duals tournament -- Urbana and Reservoir will make the trip.

Washington will represent West Virginia and other teams from Virginia include Osbourn, Liberty, Sherando and Cosby.

All day admission is $7. A wide variety of concessions will be available during the duals.

(Jan. 19, 2011) - Stone Bridge High School and Virginia Teach grad Ed Wang, a rookie offensive lineman this season with the Buffalo Bills and the first Chinese-American player drafted into the NFL, had lunch today at the State Department where he met, among others, the President of China, Hu Jinitao, U.S. Vice President Joseph Biden, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and musician Yo-Yo Ma.

Also attending the lunch were Barbra Streisand, Henry Kissinger, Madeleine Albright, Robert Gates, Colin Powell, Sen. John Kerry, Vera Wang (no relation to Ed!), Michelle Kwan, Quincy Jones and many more.

VivaLoudoun Wrestling Rankings Released! Top 3 in Each Weight Class for Loudoun

(Jan. 19, 2011) - VivaLoudoun went behind closed doors this week with a couple of Loudoun wresting experts and came up with our first rankings of the season.

These rankings include all nine Dulles District teams as well as Loudoun's three AAA schools. Tell us what you think in the comments below ... but remember to keep it civil (pretend like your mother is going to read it ... heck, she probably will!).

(Jan. 19, 2011) - Briar Woods High School will host a JV wresting tournament on Friday that features eight of the 12 Loudoun high schools. The meet will start at 5:30 p.m. and wrap up around 10 p.m.

Youth Sports - Gymnastics - APEX Girls Teams Grab a 1st, Three Runner-ups at Arlington Aerials

(Jan. 19, 2011) - The APEX girls gymnastics team started the new year off right with one win and three second place finishes at the Arlington Aerials Invitational on January 15-161.

Girls Basketball: Kayla Tibbs and Debbie Reilly Earn Heritage Player of the Week Honors

Leesburg (Jan. 19, 2011) - Heritage High School girls basketball has named Kayla Tibbs and Debbie Reilly as Players of the Week for January 3-7.

Offensive Player of the Week: Kayla Tibbs
Tibbs, a freshman guard, was named player of the week for her very efficient offensive production. For the week she scored 31 points (10 per game) while shooting 15 of 34 from the field (44 percent), and also accumulated 6 assists. On the season, Tibbs is averaging 7 points per contest while shooting 40 percent from the field.

Defensive Player of the Week: Debbie Reilly
Senior forward Debbie Reilly played very solid defense for the week with 12 defensive rebounds, 5 deflections, and 4 steals. Reilly’s performance against Cedar Run powerhouse Stonewall Jackson is what put her over the top defensively as she limited Lady Raider center Joy Caracciolo to 25 points. Caracciolo is averaging 21 points a game, but those numbers are coming primarily against prep schools throughout the state, not public schools like Heritage; therefore, Reilly’s feat was impressive.

Basketball: Leesburg Christian Boys and Girls Sweep Pioneer Classic Tournament

(Jan. 19, 2011) - The Leesburg Christian boys and girls basketball teams swept the Pioneer Pioneer Classic Tournament held over the weekend in Edinburg.

The Leesburg boys opened with a 47-20 win over Odenton and the edged Evangel by eight, 46-38. After doubling up on host Valley Baptist, 50-25, Leesburg then beat Evangel again in the finals, 49-37.

The Leesburg girls ran by Keystone Christian Academy, 30-10, to open and then beat host Valley Baptist, 39-33, in a close game. After a big win over Evangel, 42-17, Leesburg again edged the Edinburg locals, 40-35, to take the title.

(Jan. 19, 2011) - The Potomac Falls High School boys basketball team are ranked No. 1 in the state according to the Associated Press latest polls. The Panthers are one of four local teams ranked with Broad Run boys No. 5, Loudoun County girls No. 4 and Freedom girls No. 7.

Youth Sports - Loudoun Soccer is Holding Spring Registration

(Jan. 18, 2011) - Loudoun Soccer is holding "early bird" registration for the spring season, with
registration for Mini Soccer, Recreation (U6-U12) and SFL (U13-U19) at $115 per player. A $25 fee will be added to registrations after Feb. 24 at 8 p.m.

The same deadline applies for the Challenge Program (U8-U12). No players may register for this program after Feb. 24. Register online.

Girls Basketball: Loudoun Freedom AAU Teams to Hold Tryouts

(Jan. 18, 2011) - The Loudoun Freedom girls basketball AAU organization will hold tryouts seeking players for girls teams for Spring 2011.

Tryouts for 6th Grade Girls team are February 5 and February 12 from 7:30-9:00 pm at the Douglass Community Center in Leesburg. Tryouts for the high school age girls team are February 5 and February 12 from 6:00-7:30 pm at the Douglass Community Center in Leesburg. Tryouts for the 4th Grade, 5th Grade, 7th Grade, and 8th Grades girls teams are February 5 from 3:00-4:45 pm at the Hoops Magic Facility.

News: Loudoun Students Earn an Extra Day (and Weekend!) of Exam Prep

(Jan. 18, 2011) - Tuesday's "snow day" for Loudoun County Public School students did not force the postponement of any athletic events as the calendar is dark this week as midterm exams were scheduled from Tuesday through Friday.

So today's postponement has earned students an extra 24 hours prior to first exams and a full weekend of "study" prior to their next exams. Jan. 24 is scheduled as a student holiday/teacher workday which puts the final day of exams now at Tues. Jan. 25, unless the school district decides on turning the flexible workday on Monday into the final day of exams. Check back to VivaLoudoun for updates.

Boys Basketball: Potomac Falls Returns the Favor and Ends Osbourn's Unbeaten Run

Sterling (Jan. 16, 2011) - A week after Osbourn High School ended Potomac Falls dream of an undefeated season, the Panthers returned the favor by ending the Eagles unbeaten run with a 67-57 non-district boys basketball win at home Saturday night.

Potomac Falls senior Lukas Mihailovich, held to a season-low nine points in the 80-67 loss in Manassas on Jan. 8, scored 11 of his team-high 19 points in the third quarter as the Panthers protected their three-point halftime lead.

"After last week it was just a bitter taste and we kep that with us all week," said Mihailovich. "We definitely didn't want to play a team twice and lose to them both times ... I didn't want them to lose to anybody else. I wanted us to be the team to give them their first loss, just like they did to us."

Potomac Falls (14-1) pulled away gradually in the final quarter with senior Brendon Chesson scoring 10 of his 14 points and junior Greg Graves chipping in for six points on the way to 14 as well.

"We have been a little bit in third gear (most of the season) but tonight we shifted it into fifth gear," said Potomac Falls coach Jeff Hawes.

The 6-foot-7 Graves scored eight points in the first half as he kept the Eagles 6-foot-11 junior Isaac Freeman at bay and the scrappy Panther guards used a rebounding-by-committee approach to out-rebound Osbourn. The Panthers made several adjustments since the first loss to the Eagles, including playing most of the night in an aggressive 2-3 zone defense as Potomac Falls looked like a high school version of Syracuse's patent zone defense under Jim Boeheim.

"I must have been channelling my inner Jim Boheim," said Hawes. "That is the most 2-3 zone I have ever played in 23 years of coaching. The kids worked their tails off in it."

Freeman, in foul trouble early, finished with 10 while Robert Carter led the Eagles with 19 and Jay Carter scored 10 as well for Osbourn.

"The Potomac Falls kids played hard, it was a good battle and for the second time in a week it was a playoff envirnoment," said Osbourn coach Mike Dufrene.

Backed by a hyped-up student section, the Panthers led from the start and trailed only briefly, just before half by a point, before a 4-0 run in the final minute before the break gave the Panthers a 30-27 cushion.

Mihailovich, who led Potomac Falls to the VHSL Division 4 state title last season, set the tone in the opening seconds of the second half with a steal and breakaway layin. Osbourn, horrible from the foul line on the night as they missed 13 of 18 attempts, missed two free throws seconds later and when the rebound kicked to Mihailovich, he again took it the length of the court for a driving layin.

Osbourn closed to within two points late in the third quarter at 44-42 on a rainbow 3-pointer by Carter from the baseline but Mickey Waggenhoffer hit a jumper for the Panthers and Mihailovich scored another transition basket. A buzzer beater by Osbourn's Cedric Delaney made it 48-44 going into the final quarter.

The Eagles bottled up Mihailovich in the final quarter but that left Chesson free to do his thing and sliced his way to the basket for two early scores and his pull-up kiss off the glass with 3:55 to go gave the Panthers a 56-47 lead.

Osburn was forced to foul down the stretch and Potomac Falls was good enough from the line to hand the Eagles their first loss of the year.

Football: Stone Bridge's Gouveia Playing in Los Angeles in Today's Polynesian All-American Classic

(Jan. 15, 2010) - Stone Bridge High School senior linebacker Kyle Gouveia is in Los Angeles to play in today's AIGA Polynesian All-American Football Classic

Gouveia, who helped the Bulldogs to back-to-back appearances in the VHSL Division 5 state title game, has an uncle, Kurt Gouveia, who played in the NFL and for the Washington Redskins but the Stone Bridge player isn't the only athlete with NFL connections in today's game as Troy Polamalu's cousin and Junior Seau's nephew are also on the rosters.

Kyle's cousin, Jeron Gouveia, is a defensive starter at Virginia Tech.

Today's game will be played at 7 p.m. East Coast time at Cathedral High and webcast live uproz.com.

Volleyball: Stone Bridge Senior Christine Beckham to Play at NCAA Division I Radford

(Jan. 15, 2011) - Stone Bridge High School senior Christine Beckham has verbally committed to play NCAA Division I volleyball next year at Radford University.

Beckham helped the Bulldogs to their best season in school history in the fall, finishing as VHSL AAA state runner-ups. While a hitter for her high school team, Beckham plays setter in club volleyball and has been recruited at that position by the Highlanders.

Swim: The Splash! Teams Split Meets on First Weekend Back from Break

(Jan. 14, 2011) - There was plenty to cheer about last weekend as several big meets were split after a season with mostly sweeps. Freedom-Briar Woods, Broad Run-Potomac Falls, Loudoun County-George Mason and Heritage-George Mason all finished with both teams claiming part of the victory.

When everybody was on the deck and dried off ... the Freedom and Broad Run boys continue to look strong in the Dulles District as well as the Briar Woods and Potomac Falls girls. And swimmers continue to lower their times as postseason looms on the horizon.

Freedom reports: In a great afternoon of swimming the Freedom Eagle boys were able to pull out a tough 150-135 win over Briar Woods to remain unbeaten for the season. The girls’ team fell just short, suffering their first loss of the season to a talented Briar Woods team 157-129.

The meet went back and forth, with many exciting races being determined by hundredths of a second.

The meet began with the boys’ 200 medley relay team of Nicholas Campbell, Christopher Crampton, Andrew Smith and Michael Harman winning in a New School Record Time of 1:44.25.

The girls’ team of Stephanie Clarke, Katherine Doherty, Katie Johnson and Rachel Moffitt set a New School Record of 1:57.08, finishing second in a very exciting finish.

Campbell (1:52.87) finished 2nd in the boys’ 200 freestyle event and Clarke (2:07.32) finished 3rd in the girls’ event.

Crampton won the 200 IM for the boys in 2:10.47 and Doherty finished second in the girls’ race in 2:25.70.

The 50 freestyle saw Ozan Duran win with a State Qualifying Time of 23.40 and Harman take 3rd in 24.37.

The girls’ 50 saw Moffitt win in 26.61 and Rebecca Mignone take 3rd in 28.34.

In one of the most exciting races of the meet, the boys’ 100 butterfly, Christopher Crampton swam a State Qualifying Time of 57.44 finishing 2nd by just .06 seconds.

In the girls’ fly Doherty and Morgan Denfeld swam 1:04.62 and 1:12.95 finishing 2nd & 3rd respectively.

In the 100 freestyle O. Duran (51.11) and Smith (51.70) took 1st and 2nd in State Qualifying Times.

The girls’ 100 free had Moffitt (59.92) and Johnson (1:00.98) finishing 2nd & 3RD.

In the grueling 500 freestyle, John O’Brien (6:17.95) finished 2nd and Bradlee Garant (6:23.22) placed 4th.

The girls’ 500 had Grace Morales (6:08.24) finishing third.

In the 200 yard freestyle relay event the boys’ team of Harman, Campbell, O. Duran and Smith won in 1:34.48. While the girls’ team of Clarke, Johnson, Doherty and Moffitt won in 1:48.64.

The 100 backstroke saw Campbell place 1st in 59.10.

The girls’ 100 backstroke came down to the last stroke with Stephanie Clarke finishing 2nd in a new School Record Time of 1:03.17, losing by just .06.

In another photo finish the girls’ 100 breaststroke event saw Maggie Eaton finish second by just .07 in a time of 1:15.30. Johnson took 3rd in 1:18.31.

The boys’ race had Smith second in 1:06.46 and Alex Myers (1:14.39) finishing 4th.

The final event of the day, the 400 freestyle relay, saw the boys’ team of Tim Jenson, O’Brien, O. Duran and Crampton swim a State Qualifying Time of 3:37.76 with a 2nd place finish. The girls’ team of Lindsey Jeffreys, Denfeld, Morales and Mignone (4:33.67) placed third.

Freedom takes on Potomac Falls next at Claude Moore on Sat. Jan 8th at 5:45 p.m.

Potomac Falls reports:
The Panther boys ran into a tough Broad Run Team last night. Many swimmers were hampered by illness, but that didn't stop the Panther boys from putting on a great effort. Sean Hurrell continues to shine chalking up his 6th and 7th victories of the year, winning the 200IM and 500freestyle. Eoghan Foley will have a busy day at the Sate Championships as he added the 100 backstroke to his menu. Gavin Saunders continues to lead this team by example and is getting ever so close to his qualifying times. Other swimmers that were impressive last night were Jonathan Perry, Brandon Harvey, Bryce Dowling, and Matthew Woodmancy. Good effort last night.

The Panther girls continue to work hard as a team and have really needed the depth to start the season 4-0. Event winners last night included: Ariana Staffen 200IM, Carla Harvey 100bk, Jennifer Schmid 50free, Leah Koontz 200free, and Carson Newton 100fly. The girls 200 and 400 freestyle relays also posted victories, just shy of State qualifying times. Some of the more impressive swims of the night were turned in by swimmers: Taylor Derby(50fr. and 100BR), Katie Hood(200 and 500 free), Alisa Malyavko(200 and 500 free), and Sammy Wahl(500free).

Dominion assistant coach Mike Morgan: Though the scores suggest a one-sided meet, it should be noted that the spirit and sportsmanship of the Park View Patriots was exemplary. Several Titans commented on the passion, team cohesiveness, and effort demonstrated by the competition. Dominion was grateful to be part of such an exciting meet, especially as we welcomed several members of the Titan staff to "Favorite Teacher Night".

Gymnastics: Weekly Gymnastics Blog - The Round-Off

(Jan. 13, 2011) - Loudoun gymnasts didn't rest after last Saturday's Glory Days Grill Invitational at Park View as the Cedar Run teams were in action Monday along with Loudoun County and then Wednesday featured two more big meets, with some very good marks turned in at Dominion including an area-best 140.900 by Stone Bridge High School.

On Monday, Heritage played host to the Cedar Run teams with power Battlefield winning the meet with 134.6. Guest Loudoun County -- Heritage's coach Jenny Aubel coaches both the Pride and Raiders -- scored 123.8 to take second, just ahead of Brentsville (122.25) and Loudoun Valley (121.75).

Battlefield's Brianna Artz won the vault (9.1) and teammate Rylie McKee took the beam at 9.6.
Brentsville's Kelly McKay was first on the bars at 9.45 and she took the All-Around at 36.4.

Loudoun County's Jessica Drews was first on the floor at 9.5 and second in All-Around at 35.9.

On Wednesday at Dominion (complete results), Stone Bridge was able to score a season-best 140.900 despite competing without injured Tori Severin.

Amy Fissmer led the way for the Bulldogs with a first on the beam (9.650) and tied for first on the floor with Drews at 9.60. The Bulldogs depth showed on the beam as they had three other athletes in the top five -- Chelsea Fonseca (9.30), Katie Crawford (9.20) and Reagan Lashlee (9.150).

Drews continued her impressive week with a 9.10 to win the vault and she took the All-Around with a 37.125 -- the second best mark in Loudoun this season. Fissmer at 36.600 was runner-up.

Dominion's Alexa Giovanis took the bars with a 9.00.

The scores were strong all around at Dominion as Loudoun County scored 132.775 as a team.

Also on Wednesday, at Park View (complete results), Freedom took top honors with 129.680 in a meet where Broad Run did not compete all of its top athletes, including Kimmy Ewen and Kerry Stolcenberg.

Woodgrove's Amanda Huebner won the All-Around at 34.6. She tied for first on the beam with Freedom's Morgan Toole at 8.6 and won the floor with 9.35.

Freedom's Alexis Chaet and Miranda Romano took top honors on the vault at 8.8. Woodgrove's Michaela Paschal was first on the bars at 8.30
