Aldie (Aug. 11, 2011) - The Club at Creighton Farms will once again host a major golf tournament marking another significant Loudoun County sporting event. The Country’s second highest ranking senior’s tour - the Sunbelt Senior Tour - is making its return to Loudoun County with the 2011 Cannonball Invitational Pro-Am, running from September 11 through the 13.

The Club at Creighton Farms in Aldie is a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course and winner of 4 national awards for best new private club in America. The Inaugural Cannonball Invitational was held last year at The Club and the winner, Gary Trivisonno returns to defend his title. Girls Volleyball: Under Armour High School All-American Watch List Includes 7 from Loudoun

(Aug. 10, 2011) - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) released Tuesday the Under Armour Girls' High School All-America volleyball athlete Watch List for the 2011-12 season and seven of the 11 girls from Virginia are from Loudoun.

This year's watch list includes 646 players from 38 states and serves as the starting point for the Under Armour All-America selection process. 4-time defending state champion Loudoun County placed two girls on the list: Jenna Strange and Gabby Serafin. The other five Loudoun players include: Breanna Atkinson (The Madeira School), Mallory Brickerd (Broad Run), Alex Heyn (Stone Bridge), Kelsey Hrebenach (Heritage) and Kaitlyn LaMantia (Freedom).

In November, the AVCA will name 48 student-athletes as an Under Armour All-American, with 24 players being selected to both a First-Team and Second-Team. Each of the 24 players on the First-Team will be invited to play in the Under Armour All-America Volleyball Match and Skills Competition. The event will be held on Friday, December 16 from 8-10 p.m. (CST) at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, in conjunction with the 2011 AVCA Annual Convention.

Lacrosse: Dominion D-Pole Troy Farmer to Play at Stevenson

Sterling (Aug. 10, 2011) - Dominion High School senior D-Pole Troy Farmer has verbally committed to playing lacrosse next year at NCAA Division III Stevenson University in Owings Mills, Md. Farmer was first team Dulles District as he helped the Titans to their third straight district title appearance.

Stevenson went 18-3 in the spring, finishing runner-up in the CAC and making it to the NCAA quarterfinals. The Mustangs roster included Dylan Zook (Loudoun Valley)

Golf: Dominion Edges Tuscarora to Take Dulles District Mini Tournament; Titans Sam Stillwell Takes Individual Honors

(Aug. 9, 2011) - The Dominion High School golf team, led by low medalist Sam Stillwell (72) and Erik Dulick (73), edged Tuscarora Monday to take first place in the Dulles District mini tournamet at Loudoun Golf and Country Club in Purcellville.

The Titans, with Kurt Funkhouse shooting 75, finished at 305, four strokes ahead of the Huskies, which posted 309 on the strength of rounds from Alec Gard (75), Caleb Keel (76) and Phillip Corcoran (76).

Heritage finished third at 320 with Ryan Douglass shooting 73. Briar Woods, led by Nick Vazzana's 78, shot 324 with top player Adam Ochs not in the field. Loudoun Valley was fifth at 326 with Ian Hildebrand shooting 76.

The mini tournament Monday is one of two events that helps determine the district's regular season champion with each tournament worth one-third towards the title and the dual meet season another one-third.

Volleyball: Heritage Senior Setter Stephanie Yokoyama to Play at NCAA D3 Johns Hopkins Next Year

Stephanie Yokoyama (#1) has reason to celebrate as she will play volleyball
at Johns Hopkins University next year.

Leesburg ((Aug. 9, 2011) - Heritage High School senior setter Stephanie Yokoyama, who led the Pride to the state playoffs last season, will play next year at NCAA Division III Johns Hopkins University.

Yokoyama was named the Cedar Run District and Northwestern Region Player of the Year in 2010 and was first team all-state.

Youth Sports - Basketball: Two Ridges League Registering Players for Fall

(Aug 8, 2011) - Registration opened Monday for the 2011-2012 Two Ridges Basketball League for players and coaches residing in the Stone Bridge and Briar Woods high school attendance areas. The online only registration runs through Sept. 11.

T2RBL is a youth basketball organization that operates in coordination with the Loudoun County Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services (PR&CS) and serves boys and girls in grades 4-12 in the Stone Bridge and Briar Woods community.

T2RBL provides organized and competitive basketball with emphasis placed on improvement for all players, coaches and officials. T2RBL is supported and run entirely by volunteers so coaches must also register via the league's web site. Additional information and directions for player and coach registration can be found at the league web site (www.erhoops.org). No registrations will be accepted after the September 11 deadline.

News: Hoops of Hope Free Throw Fundraiser on Aug. 27 to Benefit Children in Africa

(Aug. 9, 2011) - Last year the local Hoops of Hope raised $19,600 for children in Africa and this year's event scheduled for Aug. 27 at 4 p.m. at Eagle Ridge Middle School in Ashburn is looking to beat that number.

The free throw shooting event raises funds for children who have been orphaned by HIV and AIDS in Africa. Over the past five years, Hoops of Hope participants worldwide have raised over 2 million dollars. The money raised by participants has gone to sponsor over 100 orphans, fund a water project in Kenya and build a high school and two medical clinics in Zambia.

Field Hockey: Loudoun Field Hockey Association Registration Opens, New Fields for Fall

(Aug. 8, 2011) - Loudoun Field Hockey Association is gearing up for another season and excited to announce new fields for the fall including Bermuda grass at Bolen Park in Leesburg and turf at Woodgrove High School in Purcellville.

Registration is open for U14 Travel and recreational divisions in East, South and Western Loudoun in grade divisions: 3/4, 5/6, 7/8 and High School.

League organizer Lisa Craig: "This year most of the high schools have established official clubs at the schools and it will be an exciting season with all of their games playing on premium turf fields. Our league is open to all playing levels, and encourages those new to field hockey to try it out. We also host recreational and competitive adult leagues to support and promote the sport throughout Loudoun."

Flag Football: Cascades League Registering for Fall and High School League Forming

(Aug. 8, 2011) - Cascades Flag Football registration is open until Aug. 18 for grades K-8th, for anyone in the Sterling, Potomac Falls, Ashburn and neighboring areas.

The league is 5v5, NFL Flag Rules in a fun and positive environment. Practices are 1.5 hours long, once a week (with rain days on Friday), and games on Saturday (rain days on Sunday). Baseball: Woodgrove Senior Matthew Reed to Play at NCAA Division I Clemson

(Aug. 7, 2011) - Woodgrove High School senior catcher Matthew Reed will play next year at NCAA Division I Clemson according to his travel baseball team the Canes North 2012 squad.

Reed is a 2-year member of the Canes program and is regarded as one of the top catchers in the state of Virginia.

Canes GM, Jeff Petty on Reed: "Matt is a big time catch and throw talent. He really has as good an arm behind the plate as you will see at this level. Reed is a big strong physical athlete that has some pop at the plate and he can really recieve behind the dish. Great kid from a great family. We couldn't be happier for Matt and look forward to watching him play in the ACC."

Lacrosse: Cavalier Lacrosse Orange Posts 4-0 Mark at NoVa West Tournament

(Aug. 7, 2011) - The Cavalier Lacrosse Orange team made up of top high school lacrosse players in the area such as Briar Woods, Freedom, and Broad Run went 4-0 recently at the NoVa West Tournament.

Gymnastics: APEX Announces 2011-12 Team

(Aug. 7, 2011) - APEX Gymnastics announce Sunday it's 2011-2012 team members. APEX gymnasts had a winning season last year finishing in the top eight in the state at every level and APEX qualified a record 22 gymnasts to Regionals, five gymnasts to Nationals and crowned 22 State champions.

The gymnasts are already working hard for their season opening competition in November. APEX has it's first level four team this year and has four seniors this year vying for spots on college teams - National qualifiers Aaron Meland, Maddy Scozzie, Anli Solly and Shannon Daily.

News: Free Physical Exams Offered for Low-Income Students on August 6

(Aug. 2, 2011) - The Loudoun Community Health Center, in collaboration with Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS), Loudoun County Health Department, and several other Loudoun County community groups, will be offering free physical examinations, immunizations and tuberculosis screening to kindergarten and elementary school children from low-income families who otherwise would have difficulty affording school physicals on Saturday, August 6th.

These services will be offered from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Loudoun Community Health Center (Building A/Main Building), 224 Cornwall St. NW in Leesburg.

Football: Broad Run Maroon and Gold Game this Saturday is a Ryan Diviney Fundraiser

Ashburn (Aug. 1, 2011) - The Broad Run High School football program will be hosting a Ryan Diviney Fundraiser on Saturday August 6 from 9 a.m. to noon during the Spartans annual Maroon and Gold intrasquad scrimmage.

100 percent of all donations will go to the Ryan Diviney Fund that benefits the former Broad Run High School football player, who suffered brain trauma after an attack while at school in West Virginia in 2009 and is still in a coma.

The football program has secured a sponsor that will match the first $5,000 donated.

Donation buckets will be available at the stadium to receive your donation. If you are not able to attend the event you may send a check payable to the Ryan Diviney SNT to:

There will be free refreshments available to all guests.

Event Timeline: Everyone is encouraged to be on the game field and along the track to watch the practice. Once the scrimmage begins, everyone will be moved to the track or the bleachers.
