Ashburn (Feb. 8, 2011) - As teams jockey for playoff position in the final week of the regular season the Briar Woods High School boys and girls teams made the first bold Dulles District move as they swept rival Broad Run on Monday.
Myles Tate scored 29 points to lead the Briar Woods boys to 78-65 win at Broad Run. It was just the Spartans (11-3 in district, 17-3 overall) third lose on the season and it propelled the Falcons (11-3, 13-7) into a tie with Broad Run for the second seed in the Dulles District. The Falcons finish off the regular season with Potomac Falls (14-0, 19-1) and a win over the Panthers would give Briar Woods a tiebreaker edge over Broad Run should they tie.
Potomac Falls still has two games to play but the Panthers have added another regular season Dulles District title to their glowing resume under coach Jeff Hawes.
On the girls side, Briar Woods beat Broad Run in Brambleton, 49-38, to move the Falcons (8-6, 11-9) into a tie for third place with Potomac Falls (8-6, 9-11) while Broad Run 6-8, 9-11) dropped back and is now fighting off Park View (6-9, 8-12) and Woodgrove (5-8, 7-12) for the No. 5 seed.
Brittany Gilbert led the Falcons with 15 points and Jillian Olson had 10. Gilbert also added seven steals while Ashley Adams led BWoods on the boards with eight rebounds. Sophomore Alyssa Cabellos led the Spartans with a season-high 16 points.
In the boys game, despite Tate scoring 29, the Falcons had three other players in double figures with Yves Kouame (13), Matt Rolin (10) and Curtis Calder (10) all having good nights. Corey Faciane added to the depth with nine points. Calder had a double-double with 13 rebounds and Rolin just missed it as well with eight rebounds.
Broad Run struggled to find balance as Nigel Johnson scored 24 and Taylor Johnson added 12 for more than half of the Spartans total points.

Middleburg (Feb. 8, 2011) - Led by Division I recruit Markell Smith, Norfolk Collegiate School beat Fredericksburg Academy, 54-26, then defeated the Madeira School, 66-47, Saturday to win the second annual Think Pink girls basketball tournament at Foxcroft School.
The event, which included junior varsity and middle school competitions, drew throngs of people to the school’s showcase athletic/student center and raised more than $1,000 for the Cherry Blossom Breast Cancer Foundation, Foxcroft Athletic Director Michelle Woodruff announced Sunday.

Smith, a 6-foot-2 senior headed to Towson University next fall on scholarship, scored 19 points in the first game and added 22 in the second to pace Norfolk Collegiate’s balanced attack. In the final, Norfolk Collegiate led Madeira by only 27-25 at halftime but turned the game into a rout in the second half behind Smith and junior guard Dee Maddox, who scored 20 points. For Madeira, Jessica Parent scored 11 and Emily Purdon chipped in with 10.
In the consolation game, host Foxcroft fell to Fredericksburg Academy, 50-29, despite a 14-point effort from senior center Claire Andrews and 11 rebounds from senior forward Sylvia Onukwugha. Paige McDermott led the visitors with 16 points.

In the preliminary round, Madeira, defeated Foxcroft, 28-14, building a 17-3 first-half lead and coasting home. Imani Thompson led Madeira with eight points and senior guard Markesha Burnett paced Foxcroft with six points on a pair of 3-point field goals.
In the JV competition, Madeira captured the title with a 28-16 victory over Norfolk Collegiate. Freshman Tori Quiroz-Haden scored 14 points and sophomore Kate Bell added six second-half points for the Snails. Madeira downed Foxcroft and Norfolk defeated Fredericksburg Academy in the first round.
The Hill School of Middleburg bested both Loudoun Country Day School and Norfolk Collegiate in the middle school round-robin competition, which brought many Middleburgers to the event.

Admission to the event was free but more than $1,000 was raised for the Cherry Blossom Breast Cancer Foundation through donations and the sale of T-shirts (sold out!). Foxcroft’s Athletic Association, a student organization led by seniors Sarah Gilmore (of Middleburg) and Effie Kilmer (Southhampton, NY) and junior Maeve Couzens (Middleburg), ran the concession stand, which raised another $500 for student sports activities.

In lacrosse commitments, ESPN Rise reports that Loudoun Valley senior midfield Andrea Mustacchio will joint teammate Cait McGinn next season at NCAA Division I George Mason, and that Heritage High School senior midfield/attack Erika Grabbi will play next year at NCAA Division III Princeton.

(Feb. 8, 2011) - Loudoun County residents are being asked to help preserve the legacy of the Frederick Douglass Elementary School.
A new elementary school will be constructed at 55 Plaza Street in Leesburg on the grounds of the former Frederick Douglass Elementary School (1958-1982). The existing building will be demolished to make way for the new school, which is scheduled to open in September 2012.
The original Frederick Douglass Elementary School opened as a segregated school for African-American students in 1958. The elementary school was integrated in 1968 in accordance with a U.S. District Court order.

Ashburn (Feb. 7, 2011) - When Briar Woods High School assistant athletic director Elmer Fox decided to retire at the end of January after 36 years as an educator, administrator and coach in the Loudoun County Public Schools system he did it in typical Fox fashion ... quietly and unassuming.
Forget making a fuss and he really didn't want to talk to any reporters and make a big deal about his retirement. Nothing personal but Fox has always been about the job and the kids and not about himself. Falcons athletic director Jerry Carter certainly knew Fox well enough that when it came time for a retirement celebration he knew it would be tough to lure Fox out the athletic office so Falcon coach Heather Van Dyke promised Fox a quick trip to lunch at a local hamburger joint.
As they walked by the school's cafeteria on that teacher's workday the entire school's staff and administration lay in wait for the celebration ambush.
"Had he known that was happening I never would have gotten him there," said Carter with a chuckle.
Fox's relationship with Loudoun County Public Schools even goes back longer than his 36 years as an employee as he graduated from Loudoun County High School where he was a 4-sport standout in the days that you could play more than one sport in a season, lettering at football, basketball, baseball and track.
(Feb. 7, 2011) - In a budget process that the Loudoun education community will watch very closely, Loudoun County Administrator Tim Hemstreet today presented to the Board of Supervisors a proposed fiscal plan for the Loudoun County government for Fiscal Year 2012 (FY 12). The fiscal plan totals about $1.610 billion in appropriations for the general county government and school system.
The proposed fiscal plan includes $1.001 billion for the school system, $599 million for general county expenditures, and $10 million for the Comprehensive Services Act for At-Risk Youth (CSA).
(Feb. 7, 2011) - The Dulles District boys and girls basketball playoff races will be finalized this week as the regular-season wraps up. On the boys side, Potomac Falls (14-0 in district) has already clinched at least a share of the title and will wrap it up with a victory on the road at either Woodgrove Tuesday or Briar Woods Friday.
The Broad Run boys would need to win all three games this week and have the Panthers fall twice to force a tie.
On the girls side, Loudoun County (13-1) can clinch at least a share of the title with a win Tuesday at Dominion. If the Raiders also win Friday against Woodgrove then the crown is theirs, regardless what Freedom (12-2) does in its two games this week.
Tonight the seeding battles take place as Broad Run and Briar Woods play with the boys at Broad Run and girls at Briar Woods. The Briar Woods boys (11-3) can catch Broad Run (12-2) to tie for the No. 2 seed with a win.
On the girls side, Broad Run (6-7) needs a win over Briar Woods (7-6) to move into a tie for the No. 4 seed while the Falcons could use a win to move into a tie for the No. 3 seed with Potomac Falls (8-6).

South Riding (Feb. 6, 2011) - In the afterglow of a runaway repeat title romp through the Dulles District wrestling meet Saturday, Freedom High School coach Kent Nagy gathered his team on the center mat where they had just taken eight individual titles before an appreciative home crowd.
"This is the second year in a row that we have been here ... now we want to take that next step," Nagy said in a strained voice as he had coached 10 athletes in the finals and all 14 varsity members finished in the top five to qualify for next Saturday's always-tough Region II meet at Orange County. "All year our focus has been on doing well at Regionals and getting as many guys through to States."
Fans walking in off the street could be forgiven for thinking that the finals Saturday were a Freedom dual meet as the Eagles dominated from start -- with 103-pounder Anthony Chau's 6-3 upset over Broad Run Akhil Gowda, who had been unbeaten in district this year -- to the end where Freedom brought the crowd to its feet with three consecutive pins to put the exclamation point on the championship as Pat Haggerty (189 pounds), Chris Freda (215), and DaQuante Timbers (285) all won by falls.

(Feb. 5, 2011) - It was a banner Saturday for Freedom High School as the Eagles defended both their Dulles District gymnastic and wrestling titles.
In gymnastics at Briar Woods High School, the Eagles won the 9-team meet with 138.300 points with runner-up Broad Run, without injured Kimberlin Ewen, finishing runner-up at 134.250 and Loudoun County a strong third at 133.000.
Broad Run freshman Kerry Stolcenberg, won both the vault (9.500), bars (9.075) and floor (9.500) and was second on the beam (9.350), on her way to capturing the All-Around with 37.425.
Freedom's Miranda Romano won the beam (9.500) and finished tied for fourth in the All-Around with Woodgrove's Amanda Huebner. Loudoun County's Jessica Drews was All-Around runner-up and Woodgrove's Michaela Paschal was third.
In wrestling at Freedom, the host Eagles gave the home fans plenty to cheer about as they crowned eight champions and advanced all 14 to next weekend's Region II meet. Freedom overpowered the field, scoring 268.5 points to runner-up Potomac Falls' 163. Broad Run was third at 158 and Loudoun County fourth at 120.5.

(Feb. 5, 2011) - The Dulles District swim meet Friday at Claude Moore Recreation Center was all about multiple winners as the Broad Run High School boys team won their third Dulles District meet in four years -- the 2010 meet was snowed out and the Spartans, without a dual meet defeat in four years, were crowned champions -- and the Briar Woods girls claimed their first ever Dulles District meet title and second straight district championship behind swimmers with multiple wins.
Like Broad Run, the Briar Woods girls claimed the 2010 district title based on the dual season as swim fans were prevented what promised to be an exciting rematch from the 2009 meet when Potomac Falls edged Briar Woods by a razor-thin margin of three points for the title.
On Friday the Falcon girls had a trio of two-time champs Friday with sisters Alli and Kristin Haufler stocking up on medals as Alli won the 200 free and 100 fly and Kristin took the 200 IM and 100 free. Teammate Caleigh Hensley won both the 50 free and 100 back. And if that wasn't enough the three of them teamed up to win the 200 medley relay (with Erica Comm) and the 400 free relay (with Caitlyn Brown).
Also winning on the girls side was Falcon Lizzie Mittan in the 500 free to give Briar Woods wins in nine of 11 events and Tuscarora's Amanda Presgrave prevented a sweep in the individual events with a win in the 100 back.
Freedom 200 free relay of Katherine Doherty, Katie Johnson, Rachel Moffitt, and Stephanie Clarke also took home a title.
On the boys side Broad Run's Mark Sarman and Jacob Leidy each took two events with Sarman winning the 200 IM and 100 fly and Leidy taking the 50 free and 100 back. Leidy and Alan Horback teamed up with Brian Cole and Jack Morrisroe to close the narrow victory by winning the final event of the evening, the 400 free relay. Horback made up ground on the Freedom and Briar Woods teams in third leg and Leidy dove into the pool for the anchor in the lead and swam it home for the fourth straight Spartans title.
Briar Woods' Matthew Nielsen won both the 200 and 500 free. Freedom crowned a pair of champs as Nicholas Campbell won the 100 free and Andrew Smith took the 100 breast. The duo also led the Eagles to two relay wins -- in the 200 medley and 200 free -- teaming with Christopher Crampton and Michael Harman in the opening win and then Harman and Ozan Duran in the mid-meet relay.

(Feb. 4, 2011) - The Broad Run High School boys swim team finished off an unbelievable 4-year run through the Dulles District as the Spartans, perfect the past four years in district duals, made it four straight district meet titles as well after edging up-and-coming Freedom by 21 points at Claude Moore Recreation Center.
While the boys race came down to the final few races, the Briar Woods girls cruised to a second straight district title winning an amazing nine of 11 events and crushing the field by 100 points.

Purcellville (Jan. 30, 2011) - Last weekend the Heritage High School boys basketball team was looking for its Cedar Run District win of the season and the Pride earned it by out-rebounding, out-scoring and out-hustling the Loudoun Valley Vikings in a 52-38 win that finished off a girls/boys varsity doubleheader sweep.
