(Nov. 13, 2012) - Students at Frederick Douglass Elementary got a lesson in the dangers of vanity from a woman celebrated for her beauty earlier this month as Teresa Scanlan, Miss America 2011, read the book “Rainbow Fish” to the school’s three kindergarten classes and English Language Learner (ELL) students.

“Rainbow Fish” tells the tale of a fish with beautiful, shiny scales, who finds happiness only when he gives all but one of his scales to other fish so that they can shine too. “You have to be kind to other people to have them be kind to you,” Scanlan told the students as she completed the book.

News: Former Frederick Douglass Elementary School Students Invited to Share Memories

(Oct. 11, 2011) - People with memories of the former Frederick Douglass Elementary School are invited to share those memories from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, October 22nd, in the lobby of the former Douglass High School, 407 E. Market St., Leesburg.

Sponsored by the Black History Committee, Friends of the Thomas Balch Library and Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) the “Frederick Douglass Elementary Roundtable & Reflection Day” is open to anyone with an appreciation for local history. This event will include both presentations and a roundtable conversation.

News: Frederick Douglass Elementary School Historical Items Sought:

(Feb. 8, 2011) - Loudoun County residents are being asked to help preserve the legacy of the Frederick Douglass Elementary School.

A new elementary school will be constructed at 55 Plaza Street in Leesburg on the grounds of the former Frederick Douglass Elementary School (1958-1982). The existing building will be demolished to make way for the new school, which is scheduled to open in September 2012.

The original Frederick Douglass Elementary School opened as a segregated school for African-American students in 1958. The elementary school was integrated in 1968 in accordance with a U.S. District Court order.
