Norfolk Collegiate Girls' Varsity took home
Foxcroft School's Think Pink Tournament title |
Middleburg (Feb. 8, 2011) - Led by Division I recruit Markell Smith, Norfolk Collegiate School beat Fredericksburg Academy, 54-26, then defeated the Madeira School, 66-47, Saturday to win the second annual Think Pink girls basketball tournament at Foxcroft School.
The event, which included junior varsity and middle school competitions, drew throngs of people to the school’s showcase athletic/student center and raised more than $1,000 for the Cherry Blossom Breast Cancer Foundation, Foxcroft Athletic Director Michelle Woodruff announced Sunday.

Smith, a 6-foot-2 senior headed to Towson University next fall on scholarship, scored 19 points in the first game and added 22 in the second to pace Norfolk Collegiate’s balanced attack. In the final, Norfolk Collegiate led Madeira by only 27-25 at halftime but turned the game into a rout in the second half behind Smith and junior guard Dee Maddox, who scored 20 points. For Madeira, Jessica Parent scored 11 and Emily Purdon chipped in with 10.
In the consolation game, host Foxcroft fell to Fredericksburg Academy, 50-29, despite a 14-point effort from senior center Claire Andrews and 11 rebounds from senior forward Sylvia Onukwugha. Paige McDermott led the visitors with 16 points.

In the preliminary round, Madeira, defeated Foxcroft, 28-14, building a 17-3 first-half lead and coasting home. Imani Thompson led Madeira with eight points and senior guard Markesha Burnett paced Foxcroft with six points on a pair of 3-point field goals.
In the JV competition, Madeira captured the title with a 28-16 victory over Norfolk Collegiate. Freshman Tori Quiroz-Haden scored 14 points and sophomore Kate Bell added six second-half points for the Snails. Madeira downed Foxcroft and Norfolk defeated Fredericksburg Academy in the first round.
The Hill School of Middleburg bested both Loudoun Country Day School and Norfolk Collegiate in the middle school round-robin competition, which brought many Middleburgers to the event.

Admission to the event was free but more than $1,000 was raised for the Cherry Blossom Breast Cancer Foundation through donations and the sale of T-shirts (sold out!). Foxcroft’s Athletic Association, a student organization led by seniors Sarah Gilmore (of Middleburg) and Effie Kilmer (Southhampton, NY) and junior Maeve Couzens (Middleburg), ran the concession stand, which raised another $500 for student sports activities.
