Boys Lacrosse: Broad Run to Play Varsity Only Match Tonight vs. Robinson

(Mar. 21, 2011) - Due to wet playing conditions the Broad Run vs. Robinson JV boys lacrosse match has been postponed to a later date. The Spartans and Rams will still play a varsity contest starting at 7 p.m.

News: Stone Bridge Postpones Baseball, Moves Varsity Lacrosse Matches Up

(Mar. 21, 2011) - The Stone Bridge High School baseball season opener with Chantilly has been postponed until March 30 due to wet playing conditions.

The Bulldog boys and girls varsity lacrosse matches against Chantilly (boys at home and girls away) have been moved up with the JV matches postponed to a later date. The boys will now face off at 5:30 p.m. in Ashburn and the girls at 6 p.m. in Chantilly.

Stone Bridge tennis with South Lakes is on as scheduled.

News: Freedom Postpones Baseball and Softball with Heritage to Wednesday

(Mar. 21, 2011) - The wet weather has forced Freedom High School to postpone its baseball and softball games with Heritage today until Wednesday.

JV softball with Broad Run and JV baseball with Heritage have also been pushed to Wednesday.

Baseball: Freedom, led by Lamont’s 3-Hit Gem, Stuns Potomac Falls, 2-1, in Extra Innings

South Riding (Mar. 21, 2011) – It is so early in the season that Freedom High School second-year baseball coach Jason Treon hadn’t formalized a sign for a squeeze bunt yet so he simply called over sophomore Zach Newell Friday night with the game on the line in extra innings against Dulles District power Potomac Falls.

“Coach called me over and said we don’t have a sign for a squeeze bunt yet, but you are laying one down right now,” said Newell who went to the plate with one out and junior Joey Plesce on third base. “I was kind of fired up when I went up there. There wasn’t time to be nervous. I got a perfect pitch inside and I wanted to get it down the first base line.”

Newell’s clutch bunt allowed the speedy Plesce to slide across the plate to give the Eagles a shocking 2-1 victory in eight innings over the two-time defending district and Region II champion Panthers, a team that returned almost all their starters from last year’s school-record 23-4 AA state runner-up campaign.

The normally hard-hitting Panthers – 45-8 over the last two seasons and unbeaten before Friday in regular season district games since a May 9, 2008 loss to rival Broad Run – were kept off-balance by Freedom right-hander Andrew Lamont, who tossed a three-hit complete game gem, needing just 73 pitches for the win.

“He kept us off-balanced and threw his curve ball for strikes,” said Potomac Falls coach Joe Terango. “Hats off to them.”

For Terango and Treon it was a game of mixed emotions as Treon – the Dulles District Player of the Year in 2001 – not only played under Terango, the only coach since Potomac Falls opened in 1997, but Eagles assistants Danny Watkins and Robbie Bouman are also products of the proud Panther program.

Girls Lacrosse: Freedom to Hold a LAX for the Cure Game vs. Briar Woods on March 24

(Mar. 17, 2011) - On Freedom High School girls lacrosse team will host a LAX for the Cure game against rival Briar Woods on March 24.

The girls will be wearing pink shirts in honor of breast cancer awareness. Anyone may bid (silent auction style) on the shirts starting at the beginning of the JV game through the first half of the varsity game. During halftime of the varsity game the highest bidder of each jersey will be announced and will come down to donate their money to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation.

News: Naval Academy Aquatic Club Water Polo to Hold Free Clinic at Claude Moore

(Mar. 17, 2011) - The Naval Academy Aquatic Club (NAAC) water polo program will hold a free clinic for boys and girls ages 7 thru 18 at Claude Moore Recreation Center in Sterling on Saturday, March 19, from 2 to 4 p.m.

The Naval Academy Aquatic Club has produced many male and female scholarship athletes for NCAA college programs including Princeton, UCLA, Brown, University of MD and US Naval Academy and is recognized as one of the top water polo programs in the country.

High School and summer age group swimmers and anyone else who can swim 25 yards and tread water for 2 minutes are invited to Saturday's "Open House".

NAAC participates in USA Water Polo age group, high school, and junior/senior level competitions, locally, regionally, and nationally and takes an annual 10 day summer training and competition trip to Southern California.

Water Polo is a combination of swimming, basketball, soccer and hockey. Come learn more about the sport from one of the top coaches in the world, Mike Schofield.

Ashburn (Mar. 17, 2011) - On Monday, March 28th, the Briar Woods High School boys lacrosse team will honor Nicholas Colleluori, a Division I lacrosse player for Hofstra University, who in his sophomore was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. He battled the disease relentlessly for 14 months before losing his battle in 2006, but his vision had just begun through the HEADstrong Foundation.

Youth Sports - Gymnastics - APEX to Host Virginia State Championships this Weekend

(Mar. 16, 2011) - APEX is hosting the Virginia State Gymnastics Championships this weekend at Tuscarora High School in Leesburg. Come out March 19 and 20 and see the best Junior Olympic gymnasts in the state as they attempt to qualify to Regionals. Admission is $10 for Adults with students under 12 free.

News: Games Count Right Away in Expanded Dulles District

(Mar. 15, 2011) - A consequence of the expanded Dulles District, swelling to nine teams this year with the addition of new schools Tuscarora and Woodgrove, is that some spring sports have no schedule room for non-district opponents so every game will count in the standings.

Such is the case for soccer, which kicks off tonight with a full district schedule on the second day of the spring season, and tennis which opened the spring season with full district matches.

Baseball and softball can schedule 20 games so Dulles teams will get four non-district contests to go with the home-and-away 16-game schedule. For soccer and tennis, the limit by the VHSL is 16 contests which makes every game this year a district contest.

Lacrosse can only schedule 14 matches so each team will only play one district match with each other. With George Mason thrown in the mix for lacrosse, that makes 10 teams and 9 matches, with five non-district contests. Some teams will play district foes twice with the first match not counting in the standings.

Basketball: For Pete's Sake! Potomac Falls Boys Repeats State Title as Simoneau Hits Game-Winner with 5 Seconds Left; Loudoun County Girls Fall to Liberty

Richmond (Mar. 13, 2011) - Spending most of the night on the sidelines, it was fitting perhaps that Potomac Falls High School senior Pete Simoneau was knocked back into the Panther bench as he launched his game-winning 3-point shot with five seconds left in the VHSL Division 4 boys basketball title game Saturday night.

"Once I let go of it, I knew it was going to go in," said Simoneau of the clutch shot that lifted the Panthers to a stunning 58-55 victory before a large Potomac Falls crowd that had made the trip to VCU's Siegel Center.

The 5-foot-6 super substitute Simoneau ended up with the role of a lifetime when he replaced injured Panther star Lukas Mihailovich with 2:58 left in the contest and while he -- along with the rest of the Panther deep bench -- was held scoreless to the that point, Simoneau made his five points count. They were the Panthers final five points in a magical 30-1 season , including a pair of free throws with 27 seconds left to give Potomac Falls a 3-point cushion that evaporated quickly when Hidden Valley's Taylor Walker hit a 3-pointer with 20 seconds to play.

"My heart was tested to the limit," said Potomac Falls coach Jeff Hawes after his team clinched a second straight state title -- the only two boys basketball state titles in Loudoun high school sports history. Simoneau's shot touched off a wild celebration of Panther players, coaches and fans and capped a two-year run of a 10-member senior class that saw the team lose just three contests.

"It was really a fitting ending ... it shows what a real team we are," said Mihailovich who finished with a game-high 22 points and 10 rebounds, despite missing half the final quarter with an ankle injury.

6-foot-7 Panther junior Greg Graves may have struggled on the offensive end, shooting 1 of 8, but he was a force inside all night and almost came away with a triple-double -- scoring 12 points with 18 rebounds and six blocks. 

"I had his back," said Graves of his reaction when Mihailovich first went out injured with 4:16 to go. The all-state senior tried to return with 3:16 to go but left 20 seconds later after hobbling badly on the ankle.

Graves took over down the stretch, completing a three-point play on a basket inside with 2:50 left, making a free throw with 2:27 to go and then sinking two pressure free throws with 1:31 play after the Titans had come all the way back from a one-time, 10-point deficit to take a 52-51 lead with 1:46 to go.

The two foul shots by Graves was followed by a key defensive possession where Panther senior Zack Curran knocked a ball in the paint loose and senior Mickey Wagenhoffer recovered it. After the Panthers dribbled away nearly 30 seconds off the clock, the Titans were forced to foul and Simoneau went to the line to shoot two, making both to set up the wild final 20 seconds.

On the game-winning shot, Simoneau came off a screen by Wagenhoffer near the 3-point line and stepped several feet behind the arc, hitting a fadeaway shot over the out-stretched arms of a Hidden Valley defender.

Brendon Chesson scored 10 for Potomac Falls which shot just 37 percent in the game (17 of 46) but the taller Panthers, thanks in large part to Graves, out-rebounded Hidden Valley, 41-27. The Panthers picked up 20 offensive boards with Graves pulling down nine.

"That kid made a great shot," said Hidden Valley coach Troy Wells. "I told him after the game, 'young man, you will remember that shot the rest of your life'."

Liberty 68, Loudoun County 55

The Loudoun County High School girls basketball team could not clinch a second state title in three seasons as Liberty, a team that fell to the Raiders by 16 points in the Region II title game two weeks earlier, turned the tables and beat the Raiders by 13 Saturday night.

JMU-recruit Jazmon Gwathmey was the difference maker as she was held to four points in the loss at Liberty but on Saturday she broke loose for 26 points and eight rebounds.

The Raiders lone senior, Brittany Batts, the school's all-time leading scorer, who had 31 in the regional title win, finished with a team-high 19 but she was bottled up most of the night by the tall and physical Eagle defense. Erica Linnemann, the hero in Wednesday's semifinals with a buzzer beater, scored 14.

Liberty pounded the Raiders on the boards, out-rebounding County, 49-30 with Ashley Lindsay grabbing 16 and Brianne Croushorn 13.

"They were playing a rough game and we couldn't finish around the basket," said Batts.

Batts finished with more than 2,000 points in her brilliant career.

"I love being a Raider ..." said Batts before breaking down in tears in the postgame press conference.

Richmond (Mar. 12, 2011) - There was a time in Loudoun high school basketball history that you had to wait a decade for a team to make the Final Four in the state and a state championship was the Holy Grail -- always sought after but never found.

Prior to the modern era of VHSL athleteics -- pre-1970 -- the area had the Loudoun County boys advance in 1958 and 1967 and then for almost 20 years no teams made it to the final week until the Loudoun Valley boys in 1988.

The 1990s saw four girls teams advance -- Loudoun Valley girls in 1993 and 1994, Park View in 1995 and Loudoun County in 1999 -- but still no titles. Until the VHSL split AA into two divisions three years ago, the "oughts" were par for the course with two teams moving to the Final Four -- the Park View girls in 2002 and Loudoun County girls in 2006.

With playoff expansion came expanded title opportunities and that coincided with an explosion of talented teams in Loudoun -- the Freedom girls, the Loudoun County girls, and the Potomac Falls boys all with mini-dynasties brewing -- and the result has been the Golden Age of playoff basketball in Loudoun ... four state titles in the last two years and a chance to make it six as the Loudoun County girls and Potomac Falls boys take center stage tonight at 7 and 9 p.m. at VCU's Siegel Center (check with www.vivaloudoun.com for Live! The Freedom High School girls took titles in Division 3 and Division 4 in 2009 and 2010 and Potomac Falls boys became the first boys team to ever win a state basketball title in 2010. The Loudoun County girls won the Division 4 title in 2009 -- proving that year that expanded playoffs had nothing to do with the state titles brought back to Loudoun as area teams took both AA divisions home -- and the Raiders have a chance this year but only after an amazing comeback Wednesday.

We have been having fun this year with the Raiders lone senior Brittany Batts, the school's all-time leading scorer who broke 2,000 points for her career in the state quarterfinals, calling the Raiders bandwagon to the state finals the "Batts-Mobile" ...

Only in the semifinals, Batts could not get her shot to drop and she struggled to a 3-for-20 night shooting, including 1 of 9 from 3-point range. When she fouled out of the game with 2:41 to go, it looked bleak ... let's just say the "Batts-Mobile" looked to be up on blocks.

Yes that was Gary Sousa way up high in the catwalk at VCU Wednesday taking photos of the Potomac Falls boys win over Christiansburg in the VHSL Division 4 state semifinals. No word on if Spiderman the Musical is considering hiring Sousa to shoot it retooled Broadway opening ... but they could be so lucky!
