The No. 5 spot is a real wildcard as we put Broad Run into the mix. Spartans tied Patriot, 0-0, and beat Osbourn Park, 3-0. Their schedule has been real tough this year and should pay off in the playhoffs

Bulldogs double up Herndon, 4-2, suffer a surprising tie with South Lakes, 1-1, before beating Madison, 2-0, in key Liberty District game to take over the top spot in ranking.

Huskies remain unbeaten after seven matches with 1-0 win over Heritage and then perhaps the biggest win in program history, a 3-1 win over defending state champion Woodgrove.3, Loudoun County (4-0-2)Raiders remain third with their only game of the week a 0-0 tie with Heritage.
4, Briar Woods (7-1-0)
Falcons fall from first after 2-1 loss to Dominion. Earlier BWoods had beaten Broad Run, 2-0, and Champe, 6-0.

Wolverines with an earlier 1-0 win over Heritage remain in top 5 and Pride back on the bubble!

It was a tough week for the Bulldogs and they did great, escaping South County with an OT win, blasting Broad Run, 5-1, and then tying a good Chantilly team, 1-1

Raiders with a huge win over Woodgrove, 1-0, and then a shut out over Loudoun Valley, 5-0, as they threaten to move into the top two.
4, Tuscarora (4-0-1)
Huskies beat Loudoun Valley, 3-0, in only game of their week.

Raiders break into Top 5 with big 5-0 win over then No. 3 Freedom

Huskies beat good George Mason program 5-0 and then 3-1 win over Potomac Falls

Huskies fall to Briar Woods, 2-0, but recover with 2-0 win over Freedom and then 4-0 win over Park View. Woodgrove slides behind Loudoun County, which beat Freedom in same week by three more goals, and Tuscarora which tied County in week one. Somehow we think the Wolverines won't rest for long at No. 5

I guess Viva Loudoun isn't aware that Stone Bridge girls beat Woodgrove girls in their scrimmage last week.
ReplyDeleteHmmmm ... scrimmages ... Viva Loudoun doesn't put a ton of stock in scrimmages! We go off the games that count ... but, yes, we were aware of it ...
ReplyDeleteDoes Viva Loudoun recognize that there's no such thing as a friendly scrimmage when you pit two former state champs together and that they are faced with a dilemna.
ReplyDeleteThey have a AA team that will not play a AAA team or Loudoun County powerhouse schools Broad Run or Stone Bridge during regular season and could end up going undefeated and finish first in Viva Loudoun's rankings, yet when tested outside of their division, they couldn't get it done. At least against Stone Bridge. How did they fare against Battlefield?
Do the right thing and weigh in their scrimmages. This way, teams like Woodgrove must show they can play (in their scrimmages as well) since that's the only measure available since all their games are intra-district.

ReplyDeleteI hate to do too much heavy thinking on scrimmages because you never know how coaches are applying new tactics, line-ups, etc ... but if you force me to do so much thinking about a scrimmage, then why not factor in that both Woodgrove and Stone Bridge girls soccer teams had girls playing basketball ...
Woodgroe's season ran all the way until March 2 ... Hardison, Buxton, Basinger for example all played nearly every minute of postseason for the Wolverines and that Stone Bridge soccer scrimmage came just a week later.
Stone Bridge's basketball season ended Feb. 12 which gave the Bulldogs a bit more prep time for the start of soccer.
With all that being said ... the scrimmage score was 5-4 Stone Bridge ... I guess an overwhelming 5-0 score or something might have tipped the scales but given Woodgrove's returning talent as well as their defending state championship role, we felt No. 1 was the spot for them to start at ...
In the end, we really don't want to factor in scrimmage scores as they very hard to get across the board and if we factor them in for girls soccer then there is lax, baseball, tennis, etc. to consider ...
Preseason rankings are ... just that. Preseason (as in even before scrimmages you could argue).
And just because Woodgrove is AA and Stone Bridge is AAA, we won't hesitate to move teams up and down depending on how they do vs. the level of talent. This week for example, we see Broad Run opening 0-1-1 but with the tie to Robinson and the loss to Forest Park, no shame there as those are very good AAA playoff caliber teams.
Whew ... the "Fox" is gonna need a nap after this one!
We should mention that Stone Bridge is already No. 1 in our books for reporting game results and highlights .. the Bulldogs make our life easy! Big s/o to assistant coach Colby!
And sorry for all the typos ... rushing to get out the door to ... what else ... a girls soccer signing ... at Broad Run! So much talent in this area ... and we haven't even touched upon Freedom, Loudoun County, Tuscarora, Loudoun Valley and on and on ... Hands down, right now, girls soccer has the most talent of any sport in the area top to bottom from what we have seen so far ...
