Track and Field: Briar Woods Leach Commits to Virginia Tech

Ashburn (Dec. 6, 2011) - Shaquera Leach, a senior at Briar Woods High School, has formally given her verbal commitment to accept an athletic scholarship to run track and field at Virginia Tech University in the fall of 2012.

Leach, who has been an all-state sprinter in all of her first three high school seasons, made her decision after entertaining offers from several ACC, SEC, Big 12, Conference USA, Big East and Big 10 college track and field programs. She garnered national attention after earning All-American status in the 400-meter run at the Amateur Athletic Union Junior Olympics in New Orleans in August.


Currently ranked by ESPN in the nation’s top 25 400-meter runners, Leach is heavily favored to win multiple sprinting events at the VHSL AA state championships in the 2012 outdoor track and field season. She is currently ranked number one in Virginia in the 200-meter and the 400-meter events. Leach led Briar Woods High School to their first-ever Dulles District championship last season after transferring there from Heritage High School in Leesburg in 2010. She also represents Virginia Special Forces Track Club in Loudoun County.

“After getting a lot of attention from many NCAA coaches, this important decision has not been easy. After visiting several schools, though, I am confident that Virginia Tech will provide me with the best athletic and academic opportunities as I look to the future,” Leach said of her decision.
