Wrestling: Freedom Beats Brentsville in Dual, Shows Well at Arundel Holiday Classic

(Dec. 31, 2011) - The Freedom High School wrestling team's holiday action has been highlighted by a tough dual win over Brentsville and a good showing short-handed at the Arundel Holiday Classic in Maryland.


On Dec. 21 Freedom kicked off their dual schedule at Brentsville High School. The Eagles squared off against both Heritage(Leesburg) and host Brentsville in non-district competition. The Eagles began the night by dominating Heritage in an 80-0 victory, before taking on host Brentsville, currently ranked 6th in the State for AA competition.

The Eagles who have moved up to AAA for the first time this year were no strangers to the Tigers. Both the Tigers and the Eagles were Region II teams a year ago, with the Tigers slightly edging out the Eagles in the Region II wrestling tournament to finish in 3rd place. In what would turn out to be a close affair the Tigers jumped out to a commanding start, winning the first three weight classes from the Eagles to take a 12-0 lead.

Freedom's Matt Allison quickly turned the momentum in the Eagles favor when he pinned the Tigers Jordan Garcia in just 56 seconds. Allison's pins set off a flurry of four straight pins for the Eagles, as Levi Hamm, Cody Hamm, and Andy Hinrichs all followed Allison with pins of their own. At 152 pounds the Eagles Tyler Beck expanded the Eagles lead to 28-12 with a 14-3 major decision over Billy Cornwell.

After dropping a tough decision at 160lbs the Eagles would battle back at 170lbs when Pat Haggerty scored a 12-3 major decision over Atal Naim, setting up a huge match at 182lbs. In a battle of State Qualifiers from a year ago Freedom's Tyler Young(ranked #5 in AAA) battled against William Prados(ranked #6 in AA).

Young scored first with a take down in the first period and would hold on for a 2-1 decision over Prados, that would seal the win for the Eagles.

Arundel Classic
On December 27 and 28 the Eagle Army would once again take the show on the road as they would travel to Arundel Maryland for the Arundel Holiday Classic. Though the Eagles were missing four starters over the holiday break they made a strong showing finishing 5th in the 14 team field, which included Maryland Prep Powerhouses, Georgetown Prep, Dematha and Arch Bishop Spalding.

The Eagles placed eight individuals in the top 6 including Matt Curry(6th) at 113, Matt Allison(6th) at 126, Dua Silva(4th) at 120 and Brendan Kammerdeiner who has been coming on strong as of late with his 3rd Place finish. The Eagles upper weights were strong throughout the course of the tournament as four Eagles made the finals match.

At 170lbs Pat Haggerty won a series of three tough matches before being pinned in the finals by Georgetown Prep's Troy Murtha, who finished 8th at this years prestigious Beast of the East.

At 182lbs The Eagles' Tyler Young made the finals by winning a close 3-2 decision over Georgetown Prep's State Place Winner Ryan Smith in the Semi Finals. In the finals Young lost a closely contested 3-2 decision in which Young nearly had Spalding's D.J. Smith taken down in the finals seconds, but Smith avoided the take down out of bounds to preserve the win.

At 220lbs Freedom's Chris Freda cruised to the finals dominating all of his opponents until the finals where he would meet defending Maryland State Runner Up Pat Hyde of North County. Freda would push the action for the majority of the match but was not able to overcome an early takedown by Hyde, and lost the match 5-3. This was Freda's second appearance in the finals of this tournament.

Finally, at 285 DaQuante Timbers kept his outstanding season going by dominating a weight class that had a pair of State Place Winners in its ranks. Though Timbers' first opponent opted to forfeit rather than wrestle him, he dominated his second opponent in just 37 seconds. In the finals Timbers defeated Georgetown Prep's Ryan Schneider 9-2 in the finals, giving Schneider both of his points on escapes.
