Dulles District: Races Heat Up as Second Half Starts

(Apr. 28, 2010) - We have updated the Dulles District standings after the start of the second half of the district slate Tuesday night and now we will take a look at the races in baseball, softball, soccer and lacrosse.

Baseball
Leader: Potomac Falls (7-0)
The Skinny: Panthers may have the bat power for a repeat trip to the state playoffs.
Challenger: Broad Run (5-1)
The Skinny: Spartans only district loss came at Potomac Falls.
Spoiler: Briar Woods (4-3)
The Skinny: After a slow start to the season, Falcons are a legit threat but stumbled last night against County

Softball
Leader: Briar Woods (6-0)
The Skinny: Falcons have the pitching and the batting to make it all the way to Radford.
Challenger: Park View (5-1)
The Skinny: The no-hitter win last night against Potomac Falls has Pats rolling
Spoilers: Broad Run (3-2) and Potomac Falls (4-3)
The Skinny: Until otherwise stated, Spartans are 3-time defending state champs and we expect a playoff run; PFalls three losses in district all came by one run!

Boys Soccer
Leader: Broad Run (6-0-0)
The Skinny: The last four wins have come with defensive leader Taylor Johnson sidelined
Challenger: Loudoun County (5-2-0)
The Skinny: With Calle Brown in goal, Raiders could go far in playoffs
Spoilers: Potomac Falls (4-3-0) and Park View (3-3-1)
The Skinny: Panthers caught fire in second half in 2009 and went to state finals; Patriots have offensive potential but haven't put it together yet

Girls Soccer
Leader: Broad Run (6-0-0)
The Skinny: Spartans did not panic when long unbeaten streak came to an end vs. AAA power Chantilly as they have bigger goals in mind
Challengers: Freedom (4-2-0) and Potomac Falls (4-2-0)
The Skinny: Eagles are young and feisty and believe they can beat BR; Panthers have been under the radar thus far but have the talent to advance from strong Dulles District field
Spoiler: Briar Woods (4-3-0)
The Skinny: Falcons will be an improved team when Lina Granados returns from her tryout with the Colombian U-20 World Cup team

Boys Lacrosse
Leaders: Briar Woods (4-0) and Broad Run (4-0)
The Skinny: The Falcons vs. Spartans boys lax tilt has always been a battle but this year with the district title on the line, it will be a must see event
Challenger: George Mason (4-1)
The Skinny: The Mustangs were part of a 3-way tie in the district final standings before and can force that again if Briar Woods can beat Broad Run and then Mason takes BWoods. The Mustangs loss to the Spartans was in OT.
Key Dates: May 3 - Broad Run at Briar Woods; May 6 - Briar Woods at George Mason


Girls Lacrosse
Leader: George Mason (3-0)
The Skinny: Mustangs in position to stop Broad Run's 4-year run in Dulles
Challengers: Broad Run (3-1) and  Loudoun County (3-1)
The Skinny: Spartans rooting for Raiders to knock off Mason
