(Apr. 13, 2010) - If the Loudoun County school board approves Loudoun County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Edgar Hatrick's budget reconciliation suggestions, then freshman sports would be eliminated but other athletic cuts, including the elimination of junior varsity lacrosse and assistant athletic directors, would be saved.
Currently Loudoun offers freshman sports in football, cheerleading, boys and girls basketball, and volleyball. Other athletic items on Hatrick's suggestion cut list: not hire assistant athletic directors at Woodgrove and Tuscarora high schools for one year -- both schools open in the fall -- and the elimination of a stipend for an assistant athletic trainer at schools and a reduction of travel costs to events by 33 percent.
Previously, the elimination of all assistant athletic directors and junior varsity lacrosse as well as increasing the athletic fee per student per sport from $100 to $300 were on the "cut list".
The school board will have the final say in trimming the budget in a vote tonight.
