Track and Field Round-up: Heritage's Toney with AAA State Meet Marks Leads Pride at Handley Invitational; Potomac Falls 4x800 Boys Relay Headed to AA States

(Apr. 21, 2010) - The Heritage High School boys track and field team finished fifth at the 24-team Handley Invitational over the weekend behind Josh Toney's AAA state meet qualifying meet shot put throw of 51-10. The meet included every Loudoun high school except for Stone Bridge.

The Pride's Marcus Finney was a winner in the 300 hurdles at 40.74 and also placed in the 110 hurdles and High jump. Click here for full meet results.

Juan Campos of Potomac Falls continued to make strides in middle distance events, winning the 800 meters with a 1:59.84. Chris Weeks of Loudoun Valley was runner-up at 2:00.14.

Thomas Curtin of Loudoun County, who was the top Dulles District distance runner in the Fall's cross country season, won the 3200 meters at 9:38.44.

David Green of Freedom won the 110 hurdles at 15.24.

Park View, Heritage and Loudoun Valley went 1-2-3 in the boys 4x100 relay and Potomac Falls won the boys 4x800.

Park View's Nathan Santana won the long jump with a 21-10 effort and the triple jump with a 44-00.5.

On the girls side, Heritage's Shaquera Leach won the 200 meters (27.04). Loudoun Valley's Audrey Houghton won the 400 meters (1:00.04) with an area 1-2-3-4 sweep as Emma McLaughlin of Heritage (1:01.24), Abimbola Akinduro of Potomac Falls (1:02.14) and Leach (1:02.24) behind her.

Hannah McLaughling of Heritage and Christina Lee of Potomac Falls went 1-2 in the 800 meters at 2:23.94 and 2:24.04. Lee was runner-up also in the 1600 meters at 5:16.64. Loudoun County's Julie Strange was runner-up in the 3200 meters at 11:44.64.

Area girls went 1-2-3 in the 100 hurdles with Loudoun Valley's Meghan Sullivan winning with a 16.64 followed by Nicole Fauteux of Potomac Falls (16.84) and Helena Niu of Briar Woods (17.64). Fauteux took the 300 hurdles with a 48.74 followed by Loudoun Valley's Jennifer Friberg at 49.54.

The Valley, Heritage and Briar Woods girls 4x800 relays went 1-2-3. Jenn Richards of Potomac Falls won the shot with a 34-00.5 and Park View's Meredith Oare won the discus at 109-06.

Heritage's Toney Continues to Win, Hurdler Dykema Breaks Wrist at Edison Invitational: Josh Toney continued his great season by winning the shot and discus at the Edison Invitational on April 10. Dan Dykema placing 4th in 110 hurdles. Marcus Finney and Troy Newcomer 4th and 5th in high jump. Josh Labuhn placed 5th in shot and the Pride 4x400 boys releay finished 4th. Unfortunately, Dykema got caught up in a hurdle during the 300 hurdles and according to coach Kate Cassidy he tried to brace his fall and suffered a nasty broken wrist.

Potomac Falls Boys Relay Qualfies for States at Turner Ashby Invitational on April 10: The Panthers boys 4 X 800 relay (Alvaro Morales, Grant Deker, Connor Wilson, and Juan Campos) qualified for AA States with an 8:07, met the National Silver Standard, and set a new meet record by over 10 seconds. Campos also qualified for States, met tha National Silver Standard, and set a new meet record in the 800 meters with a time of 1:57.5. Alvaro Morales and Natalie Wright met the Region II qualification mark in the 1600 meters and 3200 meters respectively.

Pride Make Qualifying Marks at Quad meet at Dominion on April 7: Potomac Falls won the quad for the boys with 75 points followed by Heritage (60), Dominion (56) and Freedom (53).

Josh Toney won the discus with a 142-05.5 toss and the shot with a 50-05.05 heave to qualify for the Northwest Region meet in both events. Also qualifying for regionals were Troy Newcomer in the high jump with a 6-0 effort and Marcus Finney in the 300 hurdles with a 40.84 mark.
