The Skinny for April 24-26 for Baseball, Softball, Soccer, Lacrosse, Tennis and Track

(Apr. 30, 2010) - Last Saturday it was all about the long ball, both in baseball -- as in Freedom's Brendan Shockley's 2-run home run or Loudoun Valley's Alex Owens' two 3-run home runs -- and in softball -- as in Loudoun County's Kelley Duerbeck's towering home run or Stone Bridge's Niki Prince's 2-run home run or Park View's Sammie Gleason's solo shot and teammate Robin Heironimus's two-run blast.

But the biggest story of the day belonged to the Broad Run boys lacrosse team as they defeated George Mason in overtime, 14-13, in a match-up of teams unbeaten in the Dulles District. The Spartans travel to Briar Woods this coming Monday, May 3, for a game that could likely decided the regular-season district title. (Click the Read More for the Scoop ...er ... The Skinny)

Saturday, April 24
Baseball
Loudoun Valley 12, Oakton 6
The Skinny: The Viking hitters got going after falling behind 5-0 on the bat of Alex Owens' two 3-run home runs. Owens put the Vikings ahead for good in th bottom of the 4th with a mammoth home run the right field. He connected again in the bottom of the 5th with another home run to right center as the Vikings went on to score 12 runs on the afternoon. The Viking attack was also helped by the bats of Alexander Barr 2-3 with 3 runs scored, Daniel Fleming 2-4 with 3 runs scored, and Andrew Creamer 2-4. Alex Owens numbers at the plate were 2-4 , 2 HR with 6 RBI. Owens also pitched a very strong game going 5 and 2/3 innings giving up 5 hits while striking out 6 batters.

George Mason 3, Broad Run 2 (8)
The Skinny: The Mustangs defeated the Spartans 3-2 in 8 innings in non-district play in Falls Church. Sophomore Conor Jessop got the start on the mound for the Spartans. Jessop went five innings allowing 5 hits, struck out 2, walked 4, and allowed 2 unearned runs. Junior Brandon Craft went 2.67 innings in relief allowing 4 hits, striking out 1, walking 1, and allowing one unearned run. Craft took the loss on the mound. Offensively, the Spartans had numerous opportunities to score runs but repeatedly stranded men on base in many innings. Senior Tyler Small led the offense with 3 hits on the day (double, two singles) and junior Zach Rawson had 2 hits and 2 stolen bases, and 2 runs scored.

Cheers Spring Break Tournament
Freedom 10, Park View 1
The Skinny: Sophomore Andrew Lamont earned the complete-game win for the Eagles and also went 4-for-4 at the plate. Freedom collected 13 hits on the day including senior Brendan Shockley, who hit his first career homerun in the bottom of the 3rd, a two-run shot to make it 2-0 Freedom. Eagle Matt Malacane, who had a bases-clearing double in the win, was selected for the All-Tournament Team.

Softball
Park View 4, Orange 3
The Skinny: Park View hosted the Orange County Hornets in the second game of a doubleheader and won a 4-3 thriller in the bottom of the seventh. Robin Heironimus not only pitched a complete game giving up one earned run and striking out 15 Hornets, she also had two runs batted in, including the game winner in the bottom of the seventh. Her walk-off hit came after Sam Thomas walked and stole second. Sammie Gleason hit her first home run of the season in the first as the Patriots jumped off to a 1-0 lead. The game seemed in hand until the top of the seventh with two outs when Orange was able to sandwich two hits around two Patriot errors and scored the tying runs. It didn’t take long for the Patriots to answer as Thomas and Heironimus completed their heroics with one out in the bottom half of the inning. Heironimus's strikeout numbers are at 125 through 13 games against just 25 walks. She is also tied with Rebecca Patton for the team lead in RBIs with 15. Gleason’s home run marks the third consecutive game with a homer for the Patriots.

Park View 10, William Monroe 0
The Skinny: Park View hosted the William Monroe Dragons in the first game of a doubleheader this morning and pulled away in the sixth for a 10-0 victory. Robin Heironomus not only won her 10th game of the season, she drove in the first two runs of the game in the first with a home run. Heironomus ended up with three hits and four runs batted in. Sam Thomas contributed two of the Patriots’ 10 hits and scored two runs as did senior Sammie Gleason. Heironomus struck out 8 and walked 2 while giving up only two hits.

The Skinny: In a rare Saturday, non-district doubleheader at Park View High School, the Lady Raiders squared off with two, tough Central Virginia opponents. Game One saw the William Monroe High School Lady Dragons from Charlottesville take on Loudoun County. The Raiders managed base hits from Renay Aubel, Kiley Jacobus, Katie Graff, and Melissa Conway with Kaitlyn Packard adding a single and RBI before falling to a tough Dragons team by a score of 8-1. Allyson Kuhn went 7 innings in the circle for the Lady Raiders and added 5 strike outs to her total of 28 for the season. In the nightcap, the Lady Raiders faced the Orange County High School Hornets, falling 4-3. Loudoun County got strong offensive support from Kelley Duerbeck, who added her second home run of the season, a towering drive to center field, while going 3 for 4 and adding 2 RBIs. Renay Aubel also contributed in a 3 for 4 performance, scoring one run. Kiley Jacobus went the distance for the Raiders, striking out 10. Jacobus has now fanned a total of 58 this season.

Stone Bridge 10, Westfield 6 (8)
The Skinny: The Bulldogs had a total of nine hits, including a 2-run homerun blast by Niki Prince, to defeat Westfield.

Broad Run 14, George Mason 13 (OT)
The Skinny: Andy Londos scores the game winner in OT from an assist by Ryan Madigan as Spartans hand Mustangs first Dulles District defeat this season. The win gave BR two big wins in less than 24 hours after Friday night win over Oakton. BR put in 14 of 33 shots, 10 on assists and collected 35 ground balls in win.
