Viva Loudoun: Gayle King of Century 21 Redwood Realty to Sponsor State Coverage

(June 6, 2012) - Gayle King of Century 21 Redwood Realty, a long-time supporter of high school athletics in Loudoun County, has agreed to sponsor Viva Loudoun's coverage of the 2012 Virginia High School League tournaments this week at Radford University (AA) and Westfield High School (AAA).

Softball: Broad Run, Stone Bridge AAA State Quarterfinal Preview

(June 5, 2012) - Broad Run and Stone Bridge battled Briar Woods earlier this year in the Battle of Ashburn and tonight they will be battling out of town teams in the AAA state tournament quarterfinals. If both teams keep winning they could face each other in the state title game this weekend at Westfield High School.

Hickory (21-4) at Broad Run (17-5), 6 p.m.

*Broad Run won the Cedar Run District and Northwest Region title with an extra inning win over OP in the regional finals Saturday

*Hickory lost to Great Bridge, 5-4, in the Eastern Region title game played Sunday. 

*Hickory is making a third straight state tournament appearance

Patrick Henry-Ashland at Stone Bridge (24-2), 7 p.m.
*Stone Bridge rallied against Oakton in the 7th inning to win the Northern Region title
*Stone Bridge does not have a senior in its starting hitting line-up
*Stone Bridge SS Niki Prince was named the region player of the year as a JR

(June 5, 2012) - If Broad Run and Stone Bridge can both win their AAA state quarterfinal match-ups tonight then a dream semifinal awaits Friday at Westfield High School as the two Ashburn rivals would clash ... but first they must get by some great competition tonight.

Broad Run (13-4-5) at Kellam (20-1-1), 5 p.m.
*Kellam is ranked No. 10 in the nation for spring soccer according to ESPN
*Kellam beat Cox 2-1 to win the Eastern Region title
*Broad Run captured the Cedar Run District tournament title and then knocked off the Washington D.C. area top ranked team Forest Park 1-0 in the Northwest region tournament before falling to Battlefield in the regional finals.
*Broad Run moved up to AAA level this year after winning four straight AA state titles
*Kellam coach Mario Hurdle was named Eastern Region Coach of the Year
*Alex Askew, 1st team all region, leads Kellam's scoring attack
*Also first team for Kellam: Chloe Boros and Mikayla Plankster.

Deep Run (17-3) at Stone Bridge (16-2-2), 7 p.m.
*Stone Bridge JR Murielle Tiernan was profiled on the front page of the Washington Post Sports today about her fight against Cystic Fibrosis. Read James Wagner's story.
*Stone Bridge won the Northern Region title for the second time in three years. In 2010, the Bulldogs went on to win the AAA state title.
*High-scoring JR forward Ashley Herndon also plays for the D.C. United Women team.
*Deep Run lost the Central Region finals to Cosby on penalty kicks after tying 2-2.

(June 5, 2012) - We interrupt the Briar Woods vs. Woodgrove 2-year long softball tour to bring you games against other teams ... but don't be surprised if Briar Woods and Woodgrove aren't playing again later this week.

The two teams that have faced each other nine times since the start of 2011 including five meetings in championship games were at it again Saturday with the Wolverines beating the Falcons 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning in Purcellville.

Last year Briar Woods took the Dulles District and AA state titles while Woodgrove won Region II. This year Woodgrove has won Dulles and Region. Tonight they face Region I opponents with Woodgrove hosting Culpeper and Briar Wood travelling to Poquoson.

On Saturday it was Amanda Rathjen with her first triple of the season in the bottom of the seventh and then Courtney Bogan hit a walk-off single into left field with two outs to set off the celebration.

Culpeper (18-8) at Woodgrove (24-2), 6 p.m.
*Woodgrove has gone 23-1 since losing 1-0 in the opening week to Briar Woods with the lone loss the second game of a non-district doubleheader.
*Woodgrove has shut out 12 of the last 16 opponents faced
*Woodgrove has 14 wins this year by 10 or more runs.
*Woodgrove pitcher Allie Reid has hit three home runs
*Ashley Cole leads WG with 38 RBIs. Reid has 25. Courtney Bogan and Christy Haney each have 17.

*Maggie Tyler threw a 2-hitter in the regional finals with 14 strikeouts for a 2-0 win.

*Briar Woods senior Macy Jones led the Falcons to a state title last year
*She is the school's all-time leading pitcher and hitter and will play OF for Penn State next year. She has seven home runs this year, despite teams pitching around her often.

(June 5, 2012) - The Woodgrove High School girls soccer team rolls into the state playoffs tonight on a 20-game winning streak fueled by a roster with 10 college-bound athletes. Tabitha McHale's early goal on Saturday was all the scoring for Woodgrove over Dulles District foe Loudoun County in the 1-0 Region II finale.

The Raiders are on the road tonight with high-scoring Shauna Kain up top and hoping for another big game from keeper Kelsey Slack, who had some great saves in the second half Saturday to keep it a 1-goal game.

Grafton (14-2-3) at Woodgrove (21-0-1), 7 p.m.
*Woodgrove has won 20 straight since an opening-week tie with Briar Woods
*Since the start of May only Briar Woods has scored off Woodgrove with the Wolverines registering seven shutous
*Woodgrove made it to the state semifinals in the first year the school opened.

*Grafton must recover from giving up a goal in the final minute of regulation in the regional final game that sent things to overtime and then given up a goal in the final seconds of OT to lose.

Softball: Stone Bridge JR Niki Prince Named Northern Region Player of the Year

(June 2, 2012) - Stone Bridge High School junior shortstop Niki Prince has been named the Northern Region softball Player of the Year in a vote of the region's coaches.

Power-hitting Stone Bridge junior outfielder Sydney Broderick and junior infielder Courtney Gibson were was also named first team for the Bulldogs who play in today's regional title game and have qualified for the AAA state tournament next week. Outfielder Presley Gibson grabbed second team honors.
