The Skinny: The Broad Run Spartans Baseball team continued its winning ways with a 7-0 victory over visiting Woodgrove High School on Tuesday night. With the win, the Spartans run their record on the season to 10-1 (8-0 in the Dulles District).

Senior Taylor Clarke threw a complete game on the mound for Broad Run to improve his pitching record to 5-0 on the season. Clarke struck out 11 hitters, gave up two singles, and walked 3. The shutout performance was his second in his last two outings.

Offensively, the Spartans got things going early with 4 runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back. The team was led by Clarke (2 singles, 2 RBI, 2 BB), senior Nick Richardson (2 singles, 2 RBI), and sophomore AJ Powell (2 singles, RBI). Junior Chris Johnson had a double and scored a run. Sophomore Joe Delahaba had an RBI double as well.

The Spartans are back in action when they take on Tuscarora High School tomorrow in Leesburg. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Dominion 8, Briar Woods 1
The Skinny: The Titans report that they avenged an earlier 8-0 loss to the falcons with senior pitcher Ryan Doyle striking out eight to earn the victory. Doyle helped himself at the plate by going 3-for-3 with a single, double and home run over the left field fence.

Falcons report that they fell to 7-6 on the season and 6-3 in the Dulles District. Cam Serigne took the loss on the mound for the Falcons after allowing 7 runs on 8 hits in 4.2 inninngs of work. Sean Harding led the Falcons at the plate as he went 1-3 with a triple and run scored. The Falcons look to get back on track tomorrow night as they return home to take on the Woodgrove Wolverines.


Tuscarora 3, James Wood 1
The Skinny: Tuscarora’s bats were as warm as the summer-like weather Tuesday night as the Huskies banged out 10 hits to best the James Wood Colonels 3-1. The Huskies offense threatened early in the second inning as right fielder Eddie Lang, first baseman Ian Anderson, and third baseman Tyler Dietrich hit three straight one-out singles to load the bases. 


The Colonels’ pitcher wriggled free however, by inducing a comebacker to start a 1-2-3 double play to end the inning. Tuscarora broke through the next inning when, with one out, center fielder Dalton Scanlon and left fielder Brady Kaplan hit back to back singles. Two batters later, with two outs, catcher Hunter Oke drove a single to right field to score Scanlon and put the Huskies up 1-0. 


James Wood evened the score in the bottom of the frame, manufacturing a run out of an error, two stolen bases, and a sacrifice fly to right. That would be the only run Tuscarora starting pitcher Travis Burke would allow in his four innings of work. The Huskies’ offense then gave him the win in the top of the fifth when Kaplan and shortstop Bernie Mayflower were both hit by pitches to lead off the inning and Oke laid down a bunt single to load the bases. Lang drove in Kaplan from third with a single to right field, and Anderson brought in Mayflower with a sac fly to right to put the Huskies up 3-1. 


Pitchers Pete Sotos and Mayflower then closed out the game with three scoreless innings in relief, helped by a textbook 6-4-3 double play in the bottom of the sixth. The Huskies aim to keep the momentum going when they host the Broad Run Spartans Wednesday at 6:00 pm.


Stone Bridge 13, South Lakes 2
The Skinny: Steve Johnston reports for the Bulldogs taht the team rode the strong right arm of senior Steven Putnick, flawless defense, aggressive base running, and powerful hitting to a 13-2 victory over Liberty District foe South Lakes.

Putnick faced only 25 hitters in recording the complete game victory, his third win of the season. Only two outs were recorded by his outfielders as Putnick was dominant from start to finish including strikeouts of the last two hitters to end the game. The Bulldog defense was solid all night but the efforts of two defenders in particular stood out. First baseman Connor Donovan made a couple of outstanding plays including an all-out diving catch of a foul popup in front of the South Lakes dugout.  Ty Lighton recorded seven assists and one putout as Putnick had the Seahawk hitters beating the ball into the ground all night.

The Bulldogs also ran the bases aggressively stealing a season high twelve bags including three each by Lighton and leftfielder Josh Kuzbel. Junior Scott Doescher added two and four other Bulldogs had one apiece.

The Stone Bridge attack was led by Lighton (3-4, 2b, 3 RBI), Sid Harvey (2-5, 2B, 4 RBI), Alex Wynn (2-3, 1 RBI), and Ryan Johnston (2-4, BB, SB). Spencer Rositano (1-4, 2B), Donovan (1-2, BB), Tyler Mocabee (1-1, SB), and Kuzbel (1-3, 2B, HBP) contributed RBI hits as well.

The win runs the Stone Bridge season record to 10-3 and they currently sit alone atop the Liberty District standings, one game ahead of arch rival Madison. The two teams will meet on Friday night and the atmosphere at Madison promises to be electric as the Warhawks will attempt to avenge the 10-9 loss that Stone Bridge put on them earlier in the season.



Loudoun County 8, Park View 4
The Skinny: Raiders report that they shook off the spring break rust and worked out an important Dulles District victory tonight, shaking off the Park View Patriots 8-4. Their record improves to 7-5 overall and 4-5 in the district.
Senior Ryan Wigfield pitched 5 and 2/3 innings to get the victory. He kept the Patriots hitless through 4 innings, striking out 5 and limiting them to 4 hits. The Patriots came in the sixth inning. Cabot Phillips came in to relieve Wigfield in the sixth and struck out three.

 Raiders had to scrap for hits and runs tonight, as Park View countered with young slow pitching that kept the Raider sluggers off balance to start. In the first inning, Stephen Veschi led off with a walk and advanced to third with a follow up single by Nick Fischer. Tyler Saleck then sacrificed Veschi in for the first run. They pieced together a second run in the third as Fischer reached on an error and scored on a double by Matt Slack.

 Raider's Field became a slugger's ball park tonight as Ethan Carlyon led off the 4th inning with a solo home run. The Raiders then picked up two more runs as Taylor Cokeley had a single and a stolen base, then scored on a single by Veschi. Fischer then followed up with and RBI double.


Slack then crushed a solo home run to start the 5th inning. In the 6th inning, Kris Pratt blasted a 2-run home run to give some insurance runs.

Raiders hope to even their district record on Wednesday with an away game at Freedom



Heritage 13, Stonewall Jackson 5
The Skinny: Mitchell Bowers throws a complete game in a Cedar Run District game against Stonewall Jackson. Bowers struck out 5, while scattering 9 hits. The entire Heritage offense contributed, including multi-hit games by sophomore Lorenzo Calderon, and seniors Bowers, Shane Carrera, and Evan McDaniel. Junior Cameron Bell put the game out of reach with a pinch hit home run in the bottom of the 6th.

The Pride (2-0, 4-10) continue Cedar Run District play Friday at Battlefield (1-1, 9-4). First pitch is at 6pm.

Potomac Falls 2, Freedom 0
The Skinny: Potomac Falls got a little redemption against a Freedom team that handed them their first District loss in 3 years earlier this season. The Panthers prevailed 2-0 in a pitchers duel that pitted Jackson Rogers against Zach Newell.


The Panthers got single runs in the 3rd and 4th innings and Rogers buckled down when he needed to, stranding six Eagle base runners. Freedom left one on base in every inning but the 6th but could not find a way to score on Rogers.


The Panthers took the lead in the 3rd on a walk to Matt Hoover. Tyler Caldwell’s sacrifice bunt moved Hoover to second and he moved to third on a groundout. Hoover then scored on a passed ball before Ben Sweger singled to center. Potomac Falls added an insurance run in the 4th on a double by Ryan Miller who scored on Colin Deely’s single to right field.


Rogers recorded six strikeouts on the night to pick up his sixth win of the season and remain unbeaten. Potomac Falls never seemed to figure out how to hit Newell who only gave up five hits and one earned run.


The Panthers remain at home for Friday’s game against Tuscorora. Game time is 6.


Softball
Broad Run 4, Woodgrove 3
The Skinny: Spartans ruin Wolverines unbeaten season and avenge an earlier 10-0 loss to Woodgrove with Dani Cook's walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning. Jennie Himler singled to start the winning rally and moved to second on a ground out before giving way to pinchrunner Francesca Beller who scored the winning run. Woodgrove, trailing, 3-1, tied it 3-3 in the fifth inning but lost a chance to go ahead when a runner was tagged out at third base. Ashley Ferrara picked up the win for BR. McKall Miller had a multi-hit night at the plate for the Spartans.

The Broad Run Spartan softball team avenged a March 28th 10-0 drudging at the hands of Woodgrove by handing the Wolverines (12-1, 8-1) their first loss of the season, 4-3. After surrendering a run in the top of the first inning, the Spartans (10-2, 7-1) responded quickly in the bottom of the first, with junior Kate Sims doubling home two runs and then scoring on a sacrifice fly by senior Maggie Betz to jump out to a 3-1 lead. The score remained unchanged until Woodgrove tied the score in the top of the fifth inning. The Wolverines appeared ready to break the game open in their favor, having plated a run and the bases still loaded with no outs. A force at home for the first out was followed by a sacrifice fly to left field scoring the tying run, but the Spartans were able to turn this into a double play as they caught a runner off of third base. Both defenses held strong as the game remained tied entering the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out junior Jennie Himler singled to right field and advance to second on a grounder back to the pitcher. Sophomore Dani Cook then drove a 2-2 pitch to right center field that scored pinch runner Francesca Beller with the winning run.

Junior Ashley Ferrara picked up the complete game victory, striking out 3 and waking 2. Sophomore McKall Miller was two for two with two doubles, a walk, and a run scored. Betz added two singles to her first inning sacrifice fly.

Stone Bridge 16, South Lakes 1 (5 inn.)
The Skinny: In a total team effort, Stone Bridge defeated the South Lakes Seahawks 16-1, in 5 innings. Allie Brill pitched the complete game for the win. Next up for Stone Bridge is Madison (away) on Friday, April 29.


Loudoun County 5, Park View 4
The Skinny: Raiders report that Loudoun County (8-4, 5-4 Dulles District) was able to get by the visiting Park View Patriots 5-4 in Leesburg. The Raiders rallied with 4 runs in the fourth inning to go ahead 5-3 then hold on for the win. Kelley Duerbeck (2-3, 2b,bb,run) Cortini Reitz (2-3,run,rbi, bb), and Erin Ertel (2-4) all had 2 hits for the Raiders. Allison Coates (1-3, 2rbi), Brittney Platt (1-3, run), Kiley Jacobus (1-4, run) and Renay Aubel (1-4, run) also had hits for the Raiders.

Jacobus went all 7 innings giving up just 1 earned run while striking out 4, walking 3, and allowing 3 hits in earning the win.

The Raiders travel to South Riding for a game against the Freedom Eagles Wed. night with the first pitch scheduled for 6 P. M.


Patriots report that Loudoun County scored four unearned runs in the fourth to defeat Park View 5-4 in the first game since returning from spring break. The Raiders had nine hits against the Patriots, including two each by Erin Ertel and Kelley Duerbeck. The Patriots kept the game close while only getting three hits off of Riley Jacobus, who also walked three. The four runs, including the one that ended up being the game-winner were all scored after the Patriots got the first two hitters out. A single, a three base outfield error, an error by the shortstop and two straight singles plated all four runs. The big hit of the inning was a two run single by Alison Coates that found its way between 1st and 2nd. Brittney Moore took the loss for the Patriots even though she only gave up one earned run in the second on a bases loaded infield single.

This loss drops Park View’s record to 3-9/2-8 District. They host Dominion tomorrow night.



Potomac Falls 7, Freedom 0
The Skinny: Returning from Spring Break, the Potomac Falls Panthers (9-2, 7-1 Dulles District) resumed their winning ways by defeating Freedom 7-0 for their fifth straight win and found themselves in a three-way tie for first place in the Dulles District. Panthers senior pitcher Heather Kiefer recorded her 20th career shutout limiting the Eagles to four hits while striking out nine and walking none. The Panthers were led offensively by junior Carlyn Hanzel (1-2) with a double and 3 RBIs, junior Peyton Valentine (1-3) with two runs batted in, sophomore Anna Zembar (2-3) who was 4-for-4 on base, and Kiefer (1-2) with a run batted in.

Potomac Falls jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Senior Erin Frasca (3-4 on base) got on by an error, advanced to third on junior Lauren Fulcher's (1-4) single to right field, and later scored on Kiefer's single to left center. Zembar got on by an infield error to load the bases and was replaced by courtesy runner freshman Kaitlyn Whitaker (3 runs scored and a stolen base) before Hanzel was hit by a pitch scoring the second run. After a fielder's choice force out at the plate, Whitaker later scored on a wild pitch. The Panthers didn't score again until the fifth inning when Kiefer got on by a hit pitch, Zembar singled to right, and junior Caitie McClay was hit by a pitch to load the bases. With two outs Valentine singled up the middle to score two runs. In the sixth inning, the Panthers scored two more runs on Hanzel's two-out double past third base down the left field line scoring Frasca and Whitaker (running for Zembar) after they both singled and stole a base. Kiefer struck out the side to end the game.


Briar Woods 7, Dominion 1
The Skinny: Senior Kasey Ball went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while junior Macy Jones had two hits, two runs and two RBIs and also scattered three hits in the circle to lead Briar Woods to a 7-1 win over Dominion Tuesday in Sterling.

Briar Woods (8-3 overall, 6-3 Dulles District) got on the board in the first inning when freshman Casey Forbes smacked a leadoff single and later scored on a two-out single by senior Kristina Karagiorgis.

The Falcons added two more runs in the third when senior Jillian Olson led off with a single and scored on a triple by Jones. Jones also raced home on a throwing error on the play.

Dominion scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth to pull to within 3-1, but the Falcon offense erupted for four runs in the top of the seventh to cap the scoring.

Freshman Caroline Fowler and senior Alex Fierszt hit back-to-back singles to start the seventh, and Forbes was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jones followed with an RBI single to score Fierszt, and a fielding error on the play allowed Forbes to race home as well. Ball added a two-out, two-run single that plated both Olson and Jones.

Jones turned in another strong effort in the circle, allowing one unearned run while striking out eight and walking one. She retired 13 of the final 15 batters she faced en route to her eighth complete game of the season.

The Skinny: Ruben Torres scored for the Pride in the 4th minute on an assist by J.J. Englebreght. Miguel Cruz in goal for Heritage registered eight saves as the two team played to a Cedar Run District draw through overtime.

The Skinny: The Spartans scored four goals in the first half to run away with their district game 5-0 against the Woodgrove Wolverines. Goals were scored by Whitney Church (2), Ellie Zoepfl, Cassie Smith and Emily Kim. The Spartans are on a 21-game winning streak dating back to 2010. And in that time frame the Spartans have outscored their opponents 76-3.



Church and Zoepfl also scored on Monday in the Spartans 3-1 comeback win over up-and-coming Freedom. The duo are part of a Senior Class that has never lost in Dulles District play. Dan Sousa interviewed them after Monday's win:



Briar Woods 2, Dominion 1
The Skinny: The Falcons avenge early season loss to Dominion without team captain McCarthy and star starter Granados. Early in the first half Briar Woods midfielder Megan Benitez would find a lane and feed forward Shell Davis who danced her way past the Titan keeper for her 7th goal of the season. With a contested PK awarded to the Titans, Mo Pinkston would convert to tie the game 1-1 before the half.

Dominion started the second half with desire and the Falcon defense fought hard to protect their goalie. Cloe Barnes was solid in net stopping 8 Titan shots on the night. With 30 minutes gone in the second half, a well played throw-in down the line by freshman Carly Melkus would find the feet of fellow Falcon freshman defender turned forward Alexis Haycraft. Haycraft carried and held the ball just long enough to draw the Titan keeper and roll it past her and in for the 2-1 lead and what would be the deciding goal.
