Baseball: Stone Bridge Plays Two and Wins Two; Heritage Knocks Off Broad Run at Wood Bat Tourney

(Apr. 19, 2011) - Most of Loudoun may be at the beach but many of the area baseball players are full swing into Spring Break tournaments including Stone Bridge which won two Monday at the Let's Play Two tournament including a win over Middleburg Academy and the Cheers Sports/DST Wood Bat tournament at Broad Run and Park View features four local teams including Heritage which handed the host Spartans their first loss of the season.

Broad Run, Heritage, Briar Woods and Park View are all 1-1 at the Wood Bat tourney.

The Skinny: Bulldogs report via Steve Johnston: The Stone Bridge Bulldogs baseball team won its first two games of the "Let's Play Two" Spring Break tournament on Monday afternoon, defeating the Potomac Panthers in the first game 10-0 (5 innings) and the Middelburg Academy Dragons 12-3 (5 innings). Righthander Mac West tamed the Panthers, yielding only a second inning single while striking out six. The win runs his record to 3-0 for the season. The offense was led by J.J. White (3-4, 2b, 2 RBI), Ryan Johnston (2-2, BB), Connor Donovan (1-3, 2b, 2 RBI) and West who helped himself by driving in two runs. Ty Lighton and Spenser Rositano each chipped in with one RBI each. In all, the Bulldogs pounded out 11 hits including a long double by sophomore Jake Kuzbel, his first varsity hit. Kuzbel was recently called up from the junior varsity.

In the second game, the Bulldog bats started slowly but came to life in the third. Trailing 2-0 on two unearned runs, the Bulldogs put six runs on the board to take a 6-2 lead. Junior centerfielder Brady Orrison had the big blow, plating two runs with a long double to left-center field. Johnston and Donovan also contributed run-scoring hits in the inning. The Stone Bridge offense tacked on three more runs in each of the next two innings before the game was ended due to the time limit. Orrison would finish with three RBI's while Donovan and Josh Kuzbel had three hits apiece. Sid Harvey and Johnston knocked in two runs each. On the hill, Harvey controlled the Dragon bats, allowing just three unearned runs over three innings to get the win. He was relieved by junior Tyler Mocabee who pitched the final two innings, striking out three and yielding no hits.

Coach Sam Plank's Bulldogs are back in action on Tuesday at 5:30 PM in the tournament semi-finals, against the undefeated Osbourn Park Yellow Jackets .

At Park View: Briar Woods (1-1) plays Liberty (0-2) and Bishop O'Connell (2-0) takes on Park View (1-1).
