News: VHSL, Ashburn Mourn the Death of Melissa Myers

(July 8, 2012) - Both the Virginia High School League and the Ashburn community were mourning the death of 38-year-old Melissa Myers who died a week ago after a tragic car accident in Fairfax County.

Myers was the daughter of Lora Bickley, office manager and employee of the VHSL for 43 years. Funerals were held Friday morning in Herndon and Friday afternoon in Gordonsville.


VHSL Executive Director Ken Tilley: "Lora has been the face, the voice, the heart and soul of the VHSL staff for 43 years. She has tirelessly and selflessly served the League and has befriended administrators, coaches, officials, students, parents and all associated with this organization. Lora has been a caring source of comfort to many, and we know there are countless individuals who will want to show their support to her during this difficult time. Thank you for keeping Lora, her son-in-law Doug, her granddaughter Lora Grace, and her extended family in your thoughts and prayers.

Our precious wife, mother, daughter and friend Lora Melissa Myers, 38, of Ashburn entered into heaven on June 30, 2012, from injuries sustained in a tragic automobile accident suffered on June 28 in Fairfax County. Melissa was born on June 5, 1974. She is survived by the love of her life, husband Douglas Myers and her precious 18-month old daughter, Lora Grace both of Ashburn. She is also survived by her loving mother and best friend, Lora Baker Bickley of Louisa, VA; her mother-in-law Margaret Myers (Don), Ashburn, VA; brother-in-law Jeffrey Myers, Arizona; sister-in-law Lisa Settle (Stan),Ashburn, VA; brother-in-law Michael Myers (Melinda) Erie, PA; brother-in-law Bradley Myers (Kimberly) Ashburn, VA and her many loving family members. Melissa was preceded in death by her grandparents Lin & Virginia Baker of Orange, VA and Lynwood & Beatrice Bickley of Louisa, VA. She is also survived by her father Harvey Bickley of Louisa, VA.

 Melissa was a graduate of Louisa County High School and Mary Baldwin College. She was an elementary school teacher in Louisa and Fauquier counties before beginning a career in kitchen design at Mid-South Building Supply in Springfield, VA. At Mid-South Melissa was the Kitchen Showroom Manager at the time of her death. Melissa was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Herndon.
