Wrestling: Freedom Varsity and JV Have Banner Weekends; Timbers Takes 6th at Beast of the East

The Freedom Wrestling Team had a banner performance this weekend. The Eagles were all over the State and the East Coast as the team competed in three separate events. And in the end the varsity and JV teams took home titles and senior DaQuante Timbers cemented his national credentials with a 6th place finish at the prestigious Beast of the East tournament.

Wrestling: Special Moment for Freedom Coach Kent Nagy as Eagles Win Tournament Named in Memory of Father

Broadway (Jan. 3, 2010) - In what has already been a special season for the Freedom High School wrestling team and first-year head coach Kent Nagy, Saturday was a truly special day as the Eagles took home first place in the tournament named in honor of Nagy's father, the Lou Nagy Memorial Tournament at Broadway High School.

Lou Nagy was the athletic director at Broadway and founded the wrestling program where Kent and his brother wrestled and claimed three district titles each as well as regional titles.

"Our family kind of became synonomous with wrestling at Broadway," reported Kent Nagy.

Kent Nagy went on to coach at Broadway while in college and later became the R.E. Lee head coach in Staunton before becoming an assistant coach under Pat McNanley two years ago in South Riding. Four years ago his father, Lou Nagy, lost a 28-year battle with heart disease and passed away at the age of 55. Saturday's tournament was created four years ago to honor Lou Nagy's legacy.

"This year, my first year as the head coach at Freedom, the boys really wanted to win this tournament for obvious reasons," reported Nagy.

And win the Eagles did, their third tournament title of the year. Freedom claimed the title by a wide margin -- 49 points.
