Girls Basketball: Briar Woods Falls to George Mason; Bell Has Surgery and is Out the Rest of the Season

Ashburn (Jan. 7, 2010) - The Briar Woods High School girls basketball program has had better days as the Falcons dropped a non-district contest to George Mason Wednesday, 54-32, and earlier in the day NCAA Division I-bound senior Kim Bell had surgery on her injured knee and Briar Woods coach Dave Morris says the official word is that Bell will not return this season.

Bell, who has signed to play at Utah Valley, was averaging 22.0 points per game in the first four games of the year. Briar Woods was 3-1 with Bell -- who reached the 1,000-point career mark in the first week of the season -- and has gone 1-5 since.

In other girls basketball injury news, Heritage has been playing without top player Necole Sterling for nearly a month but the Pride hope to have her back on the court next week.

Girls Basketball: Briar Woods Kim Bell to Have Knee Surgery, May be Lost for the Season

Ashburn (Dec. 28, 2009) - Briar Woods High School senior Kim Bell started off the season on a high note, celebrating her NCAA Division I signing to Utah Valley and then back-to-back 29-point performances as she broke the 1,000-point career mark. Bell, however, may be lost for the rest of the season as Falcon coach Dave Morris says that she will likely have surgery on a meniscus tear and will face six weeks or longer of recovery on the knee injury.

In four games with Bell, who was averaging 22.0 points per game, the Falcons were 3-1 with the only loss coming to Loudoun County. The Falcons are 1-1 since. Briar Woods will host a holiday tournament starting Tuesday.
