Baseball: Broad Run to Host Wood Bat Tournament over Spring Break

(Mar. 23, 2010) - The Broad Run High School baseball team, with the help of Cheers Sports and Diamond Sports Training, will be hosting the 2010 Broad Run HS Wood Bat Tournament next week over Spring Break.

The tournament will involve Broad Run, Dominion, Briar Woods, and Loudoun County. Games will be played on Monday and Tuesday at noon and 3 p.m. with Wednesday as a make-up date if needed:

Monday, March 29th - Game 1 - Broad Run vs. Dominion at Noon
Monday, March 29th - Game 2 - Briar Woods vs. Loudoun County at 3pm
Tuesday, March 30th - Game 3 - Consolation Game at Noon
Tuesday, March 30th - Game 4 - Championship Game at 3 pm
Wednesday, March 31st - Make-up date (only if necessary due to the weather)

"The idea of hosting a wood bat tournament (as opposed to a normal, aluminum bat event) is something that our coaching staff decided might be a way to make the tournament experience a unique one for our players," reports Broad Run coach Pat Cassidy. "We hope it is something that they enjoy getting the opportunity to participate in. Using wood bats is a little bit of a 'throwback' or 'old school' type of an idea. After swinging wood bats most players will appreciate how the game was played before aluminum bats became the norm in baseball."

The sponsorship of Cheers Sports and DST was crucial to holding the event.

"Regarding the wood bats, the Broad Run Baseball staff and its players would like to extend a special thanks to Denny Petrella and Joe Donatella at Cheers Sports, and John Lechler and Jason Bagby at DST for sponsoring the tournament," stated Cassidy. "Their support is the primary factor allowing us to host this event for our players. Without their help this event would not be possible."
