Softball: Vienna Stars 16U Premier Wins Another

(Sept. 20, 2012) - As the sun was setting in Philadelphia on Sunday, the Vienna Stars 16U Premier team was walking away with their second championship trophy in as many weeks, this time at the Newtown Rock Fall Tournament.


The weather wasn’t the only thing perfect over the weekend as the Stars continued their winning ways with a 7-0 record, outscoring their opponents by a combined 64 runs (69 runs scored to 5 runs allowed). The stout defense and strong pitching was evident all weekend and the hitting was stellar throughout the lineup. All 15 Vienna players contributed to the success.

The Stars were seeded number one following Saturday’s pool play after relinquishing 0 runs and scoring 38 in 4 games behind the strong pitching of Katie Vannicola, Madison Larson and Delaney Turner and rock solid catching by Brittany Coffey and Alexa Binckes.

Sunday’s championship game against the East Coast Tsunami (New Jersey) provided the toughest match for the Stars at the tournament. After a couple scoreless innings the Stars built a 7-0 lead. The Tsunami fought back to put three runs on the board in the 6th inning, only to see the Stars answer back in the bottom of the 6th with a monster 2 run home run from Danielle Brendes and a 2 RBI double by Madison Small to end the game with a 11-3 championship win.

The winning pitcher was Mia Lacy, with Turner coming on in relief to finish the game. Big hits also came off the bats of Lacy, Coffey, Emily Kenny, Olivia Sappington, Grace Sanderson and others. The Tsunami were previously undefeated in their Fall Season with a 10-0-1 record coming into the matchup.

This win improves the Vienna Stars 16u Premier record to a perfect 12-0 for the Fall season.
