Softball: Vienna Stars 16U Captures First Responders Cup in Arlington

(Sept. 12, 2012) - The Vienna Stars 16U Premier softball team, with players from Broad Run, Briar Woods, Loudoun County, Stone Bridge and Woodgrove high schools, captured the 16U division of the 2012 First Responders Cup in Arlington this weekend by going a perfect 4-0.

Saturday’s schedule was shortened due to tornado warnings and severe weather in the Arlington area. On Sunday, the Stars started slow but came from behind to beat the Shamrocks in the semifinals and then took control of the championship game to win 5-0 against the Riviera Beach Spirit of Maryland with solid defense, good pitching and timely hitting.
The Vienna Stars 16U Premier Team is comprised of the best 16U players in the area and is well represented by Loudoun high school athletes from Broad Run, Briar Woods, Stone Bridge, Woodgrove and Loudoun County as well as girls from Fairfax and Prince William County schools. The Vienna Stars 18U Gold team also captured the crown in the 18U Division.

The First Responders Cup Tournament was founded in 2002, and has been held annually since, to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice, and to celebrate the heroism of the Arlington Fire and Police who were the first at the Pentagon. All net proceeds raised from the tournament are donated to Pentagon Disaster Relief charities. This is the premier fall softball kickoff tournament in the Washington area.
