Volleyball: "The Skinny" Has All the Volleyball Action from Thursday

(Aug. 26, 2011) - The Dulles District opened with a full schedule on the first big night of girls high school volleyball in Loudoun. 4-time defending AA state champion Loudoun County opened with a win and two former Dulles teams making their return to the district, Heritage and Loudoun Valley, also each notched victories.

Finally, Woodgrove edged Dominion in a 5-match thriller and Freedom beat Briar Woods in non-district play.

Volleyball - Thurs. Aug. 25
Freedom def. Briar Woods, 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-18)
The Skinny: This rivalry is now non-district as Freedom moves up to the AAA Cedar Run District. Eagles were the surprise of the 2010 season with a run in the playoffs to the state tournament. For Freedom, Kaitlyn LaMantia and Jasmine Jackson each had 8 kills while Noa Bell had 3 kills. Strong defense in the back row was led by Andrea Phung with 16 digs and with Jasmione Jackson and Noa Bell each having 4 blocks while Kaitlyn LaMantia had 3.

Dominion at Woodgrove, 3-0 (25-23, 23-25, 27-25, 23-25, 15-13)The Skinny: According to Woodgrove's website: "The Wolverines home opener was a dog fight of a match!" The Wolverines split the first four games with Dominion -- Win 25-23, Loss 23-25, Win 27-25, Loss 23-25. Going into the final game, the tensions were high, and everyone in the gym was on the edge of their seats as Woodgrove pulled out the WIN 15-13!"

"Congratulations to all three squads for the strong showing during the season opener vs. Dominion High School. Freshman swept with a score of 25-12, and 25-7! A strong showing from a team with a great deal of promise. JV blew out the first game with an amazing serving line-up that led to a 25-6 win. Dominion battled back and took the second game 25-21. The nail-bighter ended in a loss for JV in the final game of 13-15."

The Skinny: The Pride return to the Dulles District with a win over a second-year Huskies team that should give teams a match this season.

Loudoun County def. Potomac Falls, 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-12)
The Skinny: Loudoun County extended its match winning streak to 25 (dating back to last season) and started the 2011 season with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-12) sweep over Potomac Falls. The Lady Raiders were led by Jordan Leiter (18 assists, 16 service points, 4 aces, 1 dig), Katrina Kirby (7 kills, 4 blocks, 4 service points, 2 digs, 1 ace), Jenna Strange (6 kills, 6 digs, 8 service points, 1 block, 1 ace), Quinn O'Connell (5 kills), Maggie Phillips (4 kills, 2 digs, 1 block), Taylor Huewe (4 kills, 1 block), Megan Fox (3 kills, 4 assists, 3 digs, 1 service point), Nicole Orndorff (2 kills, 2 digs), Mandy Powers (6 assists, 1 dig, 1 service point), Jane Feddersen (1 kill, 1 block), Gabby Serafin (12 digs, 8 points, 2 aces), Kelsey Slack (5 points, 1 ace, 1 dig), Kelsey Anderson (4 points, 1 dig).

The JV Raiders swept the Panthers 2-0, while the Freshmen cruised to a victory 2-0 (25-5, 25-5). The Lady Raiders return to action Tuesday as they open their home schedule versus Loudoun Valley, and welcome them back to the Dulles District after a 6 year stay in AAA. The Freshmen Raiders travel to Loudoun Valley this Saturday for an 8 team tournament.

Loudoun Valley def. Park View, 3-0 (25-7, 25-14, 25-16)
The Skinny: Abby McIntyre led the Vikes with 12 kills as Valley returned to the AA Dulles District with a win. Katie Voss added 5 more kills and Morgan Hammer had 4. Olivia Barnhardt had 10 assists, Amanda Shouse had 8 and Sammy Iliff had 7. Hammer (Yes, we will use the term "Hammer Time" this season!) had 8 digs, Kristin Caputo added 6.
