(July 21, 2010) - While it was set last month that District 16 would be sending a Dulles team to the Virginia State 10/11 tournament starting in Louisa tonight - the question was National or American? And it was answered in a Dulles vs. Dulles championship game between the two teams that dominated the District 16 tournament with determination and confidence in every aspect of the game. The National team won the title game 10-0.
The Dulles American All-Stars came up the hard way - losing their first game in a heartbreaker against Upper Loudoun American 7-5. They fought back and defeating Upper Loudoun American 7–0, then Central Loudoun American 11-1. This set up a rematch against Upper Loudoun American, which ended in a tense extra inning game with Dulles American on top, 7–6.
The undefeated Dulles National All-Stars rolled over the competition winning decisively against Loudoun South 17–1, came out on top in a tough battle against Upper Loudoun National 8-5, and defeated Upper Loudoun American 7–2.
The title game showdown at Crittenden Park ended with the Dulles National League All Stars emerging as the district champions, winning 10–0 in a bittersweet battle - boys from both teams play on travel teams with each other.
“Gino went to state with the coach and half the players on the American team last year,” observed Don Ventrice, father of National player Gino. “And plays travel ball with three boys on the other team as well. It was a great win but it was tough playing against friends and teammates.”
The National All Stars played a practically flawless game with excellent pitching, error free fielding and strong clutch hitting in 2-out situations.
Dulles National All Stars won their first game 11 -1 in 5 innings with lights out pitching from Sean Clark and fantastic pitching by Ryan Blazauskas- lots of great hitting including a home run by Gino Ventrice! We take on Front Royal Sundya evening.
