Tennis Round-up: March 15-22 - *Now Updated*

(March 23, 2010) - Well the first full week of high school tennis in 2010 started with a rainy Monday and ended with a rainy Monday but in between some schools were able to play as many as three matches.

On the boys side, Briar Woods, Broad Run and Freedom were all off to undefeated starts in the Dulles District. On the girls side, Loudoun County has started off with three wins in the Dulles District.

The Skinny from the Raiders: The boys tennis team played back to back matches, facing Briar Woods at home Friday and Washington High School in Charles Town, WV this afternoon. Briar Woods brought their "A game" and handily defeated the Raiders by a 9-0 score. While the Raiders are still working through early season rust, BW should be congratulated for their great play on the courts.

The Washington Patriots field a team that is expected to contend for the West Virginia state high school championship this season. Additionally, their # 1 player, senior Jacob Jones is the returning state runner up. While the Patriots defeated the Raiders by a 5-2 margin, the match play was much closer than the final score showed. More importantly, the Raiders showed great improvement up and down the lineup, with some notable performances.

Senior Greg D’Alessio, who has been showing great form in early season practice, notched his first victory of the season playing at the #3 slot. Greg led the match from start to finish, winning by an 8-4 margin. Senior Darius Saedi, playing at the #3 doubles slot won the first varsity match of his career by an 8-6 margin. Darius was teamed with freshman Andrew Flynn who started and won the first varsity match of his Raiders career as well. While senior Chris Czupak came up short in his match against Patriot #1 Jacob Jones, the match was extremely close, with 6 of the 8 game points Jones won going into deuce play. Lastly, in exhibition play, first year player A.J. Neuharth-Keusch teamed with senior Nate Blakeman in doubles, winning by a resounding score of 8-1.

The Raiders are now 0-3 in Dulles District team play, and are 1-2 in Dulles singles and doubles play. The top four teams, singles and doubles players will advance to compete for District titles at seasons end.

Next up for the Raiders is an away match on Thursday March 25th against the Titans of Dominion.

The Skinny from the Raiders: The Raiders boys tennis team lost a close battle against the Patriots by a 5-4 margin. The Raiders fell behind in singles by the score of 4-2 and nearly pulled out a come-from-behind match victory by winning 2 of the 3 doubles matches. Daniel Seifert led the team this afternoon with a quality win at the # 4 singles slot, winning by a score of 8-6. In addition, Daniel anchored the #2 doubles with fellow senior Greg D’Alessio, winning by a score of 8-6. Senior Chris Czupak secured a win at the #1 singles slot. The Raiders #1 doubles team of Czupak and senior Andrew Sinden battled back from a 5-2 deficit, shifting the match momentum their way in a convincing 8-6 victory.

The Skinny from the Raiders: The 2010 LCHS Raiders Boys Tennis team lost its opening day match vs. a rebuilding Eagles from Freedom. Freedom won the match 8-1. The bright spot for the Raiders this evening was freshman Seth Latka, who started and won the first varsity match of his career by an 8-5 margin. Senior Darius Saedi returned in good form from an early season ankle injury, and senior Nate Blakeman enjoyed the first singles start of his Raider career.
