Boys Lacrosse: Titans Drop Season Opener to AAA Brooke Point, 13-12

Sterling (Mar. 22, 2010) - The Dominion High School boys lacrosse team lost their season opener to Brooke Point, 13-12, in a close one that went down to the final few seconds last Wednesday night at Titan Stadium.

With over 15 seniors graduated from last year’s team, including All-Dulles District offensive standouts Zack Glascock and Michael Fawkes, the Titans were looking to see who would step up to fill the void. It quickly became apparent that the Titans are again loaded with shot-makers as six players scored goals, led by lanky senior middie Thomas Dewar who scored four goals and won 12 of 22 face-offs.

The Titans struck first and built a 5-1 lead in the first period before the Blackhawks came back to close the gap to 6-4 at the end of the first period.

Brooke Point, with a senior laden team featuring two offensive studs committed to play at D1 schools, held the Titans scoreless in the second.

In the third, Brooke Point benefited from several DHS penalties scoring three man-up goals. It was turn-about in the 4th period as the Titans came back and scored four man-up goals to tie it at 11-11 with under five minutes to go.

Down by two and less than a minute to go, the Titans defense stole the ball and Dominion scored to make it a one-goal game. With just 25 seconds left, Dewar, who had taken the ball down field to score twice off face-offs earlier in the game for the Titans, came up with the ensuing face-off only to have a procedure call turn the ball over to Brooke Point, who held on for the win.

For the Titans, senior middie Sean Cooper scored two goals and three assists, while senior Nick “Nugget” Brendes scored a hat-trick with three goals. Junior attackman Stephen Tarrant stepped nicely into the attack role vacated by Fawkes, dishing out four assists while scoring a goal of his own.

Other DHS scoring came from junior attackman Kyle Hall (one goal, two assists), and freshman Brett Bushman was impressive in his first varsity start scoring a goal and winning all three face-offs he took. Junior goalie Andrew Fawkes, an All-Dulles District second team selection last year, looked sharp in goal with 12 saves, including a couple of acrobatic, close-in stops, as he was peppered all night long by the hard shooting Blackhawks.
