Football: Woodgrove Improves to 5-0 with 40-0 Win Over Dominion

(Sept. 25, 2012) - The Woodgrove High School football team continued its hot start under first-year coach Mike Skinner with a 40-0 win over Dominion Friday night. Josh Sweet paced the Wolverines (3-0 in Dulles District, 5-0 overall) with 253 yards rushing on 32 carries and three touchdowns and Tucker Coil threw for 112 yards on 10 of 14 passing with two touchdowns.

Dominion falls to 1-2, 1-3 on the season.

Football: Tuscarora Grounds Out a Key Win Over Loudoun County in the Battle of the Burg

Leesburg (Sept. 25, 20212) - Tuscarora High School, behind the strong running of sophomore Noah Reimers, grounded out a 21-7 victory over rival Loudoun County Friday night in the Battle of the Burg.

Both teams came in undefeated with Tuscarora improving to 2-0 in the Dulles District and 4-0 overall and Loudoun County falling to 1-1 and 3-1. The Huskies now host Briar Woods (3-0, 5-0) this Friday in another match-up of unbeatens.

Reimers rushed for 146 yards on 31 carries and scored twice and the Tuscarora defense held the high-scoring Raiders to just one score.

(Sept. 23, 20212) - Even before Stone Bridge High School head football coach Mickey Thompson led his Bulldogs to a 37-14 win over Broad Run Friday in the Battle of the Burn, he was having a good week as the Washington Redskins announced before the kickoff that Thompson had been named the Redskins High School Coach of the Week for Sept. 17. Also, Jeremiah Davis of West Potomac High School in Alexandria was named Coach of the Week for Sept. 10.

Cross Country: 3,855 Runners Tackle heat, hills at Oatlands - Tuscarora Girls, Stone Bridge Boys Shine Brightest for Local Teams

(Sept. 22, 2012) - On a hot morning, some 3,855 cross country runners tackled the hills and sloshed through the mud at the 2012 Oatlands Invitational.

Chantilly, behind senior Sean McGorty's winning time of 15:26, won the boys varsity A race with 90 points, way ahead of runner-up Battlefield at 194. Stone Bridge (299) finished in a tie for sixth thanks to the pack running of  junior Brady Guertin and seniors Austin Lushinski and Robert Willis, as they took 33 thru 35 within two seconds of each other.

Loudoun County senior Patrick Joseph was 10th in the field of 357 runners with a 16:27.

In the girls varsity A race, co-host Tuscarora (226) finished fourth with Osbourn Park winning in a close race with 150 points to runner-up Bethesda-Chevy Chase 164 and Battlefield 168.

Woodgrove freshman Emma Gillies was 10th with a 20:00 and Briar Woods senior Jackie Deffer took 1tth with a 20:14. The Huskies were led by sophomore Anna Wasko (20:54) and junior Colleen Heberle (21:00).

Broad Run boys won the varsity B race with junior Dane Boegner pacing the squad with a 17:40 for 15th.

Loudoun Valley girls were fifth in the varsity B race. Potomac Falls junior Sarah Dillistin was fourth at 20:42.

Football: Briar Woods Makes it 19 Straight Wins Behind Dominant Defense

(Sept. 22, 2012) - The Briar Woods High School football team won its 19th consecutive game behind a dominant defense as the Falcons held Potomac Falls to 68 total yards in a 49-3 victory Friday night.

Briar Woods (3-0, 5-0) travels to Tuscarora (2-0, 4-0) in a Dulles District showdown set up by the Huskies 21-7 win over Loudoun County Friday in the Battle of the Burg.

Ashburn (Sept. 22, 2012) - Hey, it was called the Battle of the Burn ... do you think that Stone Bridge High School senior quarterback Ryan Burns would really miss the game?!? Overcoming a dodgy ankle that limited him practice during the week, Burns was on fire Friday, throwing three touchdown passes on 10 of 16 passing for 154 yards in the Bulldogs commanding 37-14 non-district win over Broad Run before a standing room only crowd at the Spartans stadium.

Football: Battle of the Burn Boosters Urged to Carpool Tonight

(Sept. 21, 2012) - If you have every attended one of the big high school football games in Loudoun you know that parking can be limited and tonight there is a lot of anticipation for both the Battle of the Burg at Broad Run where the Spartans take on Ashburn rival Stone Bridge and for the Battle of the Burg at Loudoun County where the Raiders take on Leesburg rival Tuscarora.

Weather: Perfect Fall Night for Big Football Games

(Sept. 21, 2012) - The weather is cooperating for tonight's big slate of high school football games with a beautiful fall night on tap. Temperatures at kickoff are forecast to be 72 degrees with no chance of precipitation and light winds at 8 mph. By the final snaps it should be around 66 degrees so you might want to bring a sweater or light jacket. Enjoy the games!

The Skinny: The Panthers were at it again with another tense five-setter as they rallied to win a ninth straight match and their fourth five-set win since Sept. 5. Hailey Bahr earned a shout out from coach Linda Lachey-Helms for her "career match with crucial blocks at crucial times!"

Patricia Mook set a career high for most blocks for points in a single match with 10. Olivia Camera set a career-best for digs with 19.

Freshmen Holly Carlton and Jasmine Ellison stepped up with Carlton serving four aces and 18 points with two of those aces and eight of those points to start the fifth set. Ellison helped turn the third game around and start the comeback with four of her eight kills.

Lachey-Helms also said that Makaely Thomas had a great night and really came to life in the fifth set.

The JV Raiders dominated the Titans 25-9, 25-12 to keep to their winning ways. The Freshmen Raiders remained undefeated with a sweep over the Titans 25-14, 25-10. The Raiders were led by: Elyse Serafin (2 kills, 1 ace), Alyssa Paige (2 kills, 1 ace), Allie Sarver (2 kills, 4 aces), Lauren Topper (1 kill), Madi Pope (5 kills, 3 aces), Taryn Dunn (1 kill, 2 aces), Annie Beatty (2 kills). 

All Raiders' teams improved their record to 8-0 (8-0) on the season. Loudoun County returns to action Monday as they travel host Woodgrove at 6:00/6:00/7:00 PM.

News: Absentee Voting is Now Underway in Loudoun County

Absentee voting is now underway in Loudoun County with ballots for both in-person and by-mail absentee voting available through the Loudoun County Office of Voter Registration.

Girls Volleyball: Stone Bridge's Ryan Ackermann Nets Career Kill No. 1,000 as Bulldogs Improve to 12-0

Ashburn (Sept. 20, 2012) - Stone Bridge High School senior Ryan Ackermann reached the 1,000 kill milestone Thursday night as the Bulldogs swept South Lakes (25-17, 25-13, 25-12) to improve to 12-0 on the season.

And the actual kill No. 1,000!

Cross Country: Almost 5,000 Runners to Compete at Saturday's Oatlands Invitational

(Sept. 20, 2012) - Almost 5,000 high school cross country runners from more than 100 schools will  hit Leesburg Saturday Sept. 22 at the 2012 Oatlands Invitational at the historic Oatlands Plantation.

The meet is hosted by Tuscarora and Freedom high schools. All 13 Loudoun public high schools will be represented at the massive meet.

Parking: Follow signs and attendants. Admission charge will be $5.00 per car.
