Football: Stone Bridge Special Teams Key 31-14 Win Over Robinson to Open Season

(Sept. 2, 2012) - The Stone Bridge High offense didn't score a touchdown last year in a 3-0 season-opening win over Robinson and the Bulldogs looked like they might do it again Friday night as they relied on two first-half punt return scores for a 17-0 halftime lead over the Rams.

Stone Bridge's offense -- with TD runs by Cameron Reynolds and Ryan Burns -- finally got in the end zone in the final quarter and the Bulldogs came away with a solid 31-14 win over non-district win a big Division 6 Northern Virginia program.


Gunner Blackshaw and Zach Wilson both turned blocked punts into first half TDs. Brendan Smedley's 32-yard field goal made it 17-0 at the break.

Robinson, which out-gained Stone Bridge in total yards, 302-263, in the loss, cut the lead to 17-7 in the third quarter on the first of two Joe Wilson scores, this one from 45 yards. Wilson finished with 133 yards on 29 carries. The entire Stone Bridge running game mustered just 73 yards on 25 attempts.

The Bulldogs took to the air behind senior Stanford recruit Burns who was 13 of 22 on the game for 168 yards, including six passes to D'Ante Yarborough, who finished with 119 receiving. Rassaun Goldring caught five passes for 47 yards.

Stone Bridge did not make any turnovers in the game while Robinson lost a fumble and an interception, picked off by Bulldog Jesse Mizell.

The Bulldogs unveiled a glimpse of a new era late in the game when freshman Joe Thompson, son of head coach Mickey Thompson, took over at quarterback, completing 3 of 5 for 22 yards. Thompson's older brothers, Patrick (QB) and Zach (DL), led the Bulldogs to a Division 5 state title in 2007.
