Girls Basketball: Freedom Coach Joe Crawford Steps Down After 2 Seasons at Helm

South Riding (Feb. 14, 2012) - Freedom High School head varsity girls basketball coach, Joe Crawford, who has been a part of the program since the school opened in 2005, stepped down on Tuesday.

As an assistant coach, he was instrumental in the program’s back-to-back state championships in 2009 and 2010. Crawford was named the head varsity coach in 2010 and led the team to a region semifinal appearance last February.

This season was tougher for the Eagles as they moved up the AAA Cedar Run District where the team went 5-5 in league play and 10-15 overall, with the season ending last week in the district semifinals. Crawford's two-year record with Freedom was 28-24.

Freedom athletic director Matt Oblas released this statement: "Freedom High School, the athletic department, and basketball program thank him for his commitment and dedication to Freedom’s athletes."

(July 8, 2010) - Freedom High School hasn't gone very far to find a girls basketball coach to replace Jason Eldredge, who stepped down in the spring after leading the Eagles to back-to-back state titles, as athletic director Matt Oblas has tapped Eagle assistant coach Joe Crawford to take over the program.

Crawford has been with the Freedom basketball staff since the school opened in 2005 and played a big role in helping the Eagles win the Division 3 state crown in 2009 and the Division 4 title this past season.

"Coach Crawford brings a wealth of knowledge, experience, and passion. He will continue to build on the sucess that the Freedom girls basketball program has enjoyed," said Oblas.
