News: "The Art of Boxing" Runs Through Oct. 8 at the National Gallery of Art

Washington, D.C. (Sept. 27, 2012) - When George Bellows died at the age of 42 in 1925, he was hailed as one of the greatest artists America had yet produced. The first comprehensive exhibition of his career in more than three decades runs through Oct. 8, 2012 at the National Gallery of Art. George Bellows includes some 130 paintings, drawings, and lithographs of tenement children, boxers, and the urban landscape of New York, as well as Maine seascapes, sports images, World War I subjects, family portraits, and Woodstock, NY, scenes.

An enthusiastic athlete himself, Bellows created paintings, drawings, and prints not only of boxing subjects but also of baseball, football, tennis, basketball, and polo. Born in Columbus, Ohio, he attended Central High School where he played basketball and baseball. At Ohio State, Bellows played basketball and baseball, as well as semipro baseball during the summer in Ohio, and later in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Girls Tennis: Foxcroft's Kelly Buckland is School's Athlete of the Week

Middleburg (Sept. 27, 2012) - Junior Kelly Buckland, whose inspirational play has sparked Foxcroft School to two victories on the tennis court so far this season, has been named the school's Athlete of the Week for the period ending Sept. 22.

Buckland, a transfer from Saint Stephen’s Saint Agnes, is the team’s No. 3 singles player and teams with Amalia Simpson as the No. 1 doubles pairing. Kelly won her singles match and also was a winner in doubles when Foxcroft beat Wakefield on Sept. 21.

“Kelly has shown a lot of determination and grit so far this season,” Coach Kate Barston said. “She made a comeback in our match against Highland (a 9-7 victory on Sept. 14) and continues to be a steady force for the Foxcroft team. Her consistent passion and willing to do whatever it takes is what puts her above her opponents.”

Football: You Pick'Em Contest Week 6 Sponsored by Gayle King of CENTURY 21 Redwood Realty

(Sept. 26, 2012) - We start Week 6 of our Viva Loudoun high school football You Pick'Em contest.

The contest is simple, you pick the winner's of the local high school football games (complete the form below!) and if you win for the week ... If only Kate had been wearing her Viva Loudoun t-shirt while on vacation! ...

Each week we will keep your record and at the end of the year the top player will get $100 in their pocket and $100 given to their local Loudoun high school of choice (hey, our site is called Viva Loudoun ... not Viva Las Vegas ...). Runner-up gets $50 and third place gets $25.

How do we have these cash prizes to give out ... a little thing called telemarketing! ... just teasing ... it is because Gayle King of CENTURY 21 Redwood Realty is our sponsor. If you see her ... THANK her!

Fine print: All employees of Viva Loudoun may play but have to turn over all winnings to the Fox ... Warning: winning this contest could put you in a tax bracket higher than Mitt Romney ... There is no truth to the rumor that President Obama bypassed meeting with world leaders this week to sit down for a chat on Viva Loudoun Live! ... (There endith the political jokes) ... WashPost reporter Matt Brooks has been reported missing. He wandered off despondent after learning that McDonald's would delay the fall launch of the McRib ... The LoCo Media Experts have a "Moe" on the panel, we are very nervous about adding anybody named Larry or Curly ... Now that Paul Tenorio of the WashPost is leaving for Florida we can report that for the last 4 years he had a sticker on his laptop that read: I (heart) Bulldogs ... We aren't saying that Tenorio and SB coach Mickey Thompson were close but Thompson called this week and asked if the "Fox" could bring the stuffing to Thanksgiving dinner this year ... When you think about it, why can't funnest be a word ... We are still awaiting royalties from Purcellville restaurants on coining the phrase "Sweet T" in honor of Woodgrove running back Josh Sweet ... Win or lose, you know that John Champe at the end of the day are always Champe's ... John Champe's initials (JC) should account for a little extra help on Hail Mary's ... If the NFL replacement officials return to small college football and the replacement officials there return to high school, then where in the heck will the current high school refs return to? ...

News: FAQ's for Loudoun County Public Schools Calendar

(Sept. 26, 2012) - The Loudoun County School board discussed the potential 2013-14 school calendar at its Tuesday, Sept. 25 meeting. The calendar is slated for adoption at the Oct. 9 meeting. Following are some frequently asked questions the public has about the calendar:

You Pick'Em: Week 5 Took Its Toll on the Fans; Poz31 for the Win! Mtneer32 Opens Up Lead for the Money;

(Sept. 26, 2012) - It was an incredible hard week for Viva Loudoun You Pick'Em football fans as only two out of 153 fans went 1-0 with Poz31 of Sterling edging out Justin Partlow of Ashburn for the weekly win.

Poz31 will get a Viva Loudoun one-of-a-kind t-shirt as well as a gift certificate from Roosters Men's Grooming Center of Goose Creek Village, good for a free haircut or shave!

As for the season-long standings, Mtneer32 of Charles Town has a two game lead with a 47-3 sparkling mark. Second plac Mr. Dubya of Sterling is 45-5. Two games back of Mr. Dubya is a pack of seven fans tied for third.

Our fans are playing for an overall season prize of $100 to the winner (plus $100 to their favorite Loudoun high school) with second place netting $50 and third place $25.

The LoCo Media Experts saw a big shake-up as Washington Post (for at least one more day!) reporter Paul Tenorio jumped to the top on his way out of town as he heads for a new job at the Orlando Sentinel. There was also movement at the bottom (OK, that sounded weird, didn't it ...) as Jason Rufner of Gameday Magazine (do you think he moonlights as Fetch?) vacated the basement and Dave Scarangella of Dulles District not only trails but we understand he is still stuck at Oatlands trying to leave the parking lot from Saturday's XC meet.

The LoCo Media Experts are playing not only for glory but the overall season winner will have $100 donated to their favorite charity!

And a super big shout out to the sponsor of our You Pick'Em Gayle King of CENTURY 21 Redwood Realty ... her generous support allows us to fund the cash prizes! So give her a thumbs up the next time you see her at a local game!
