Girls Lacrosse: Dulles, Cedar Run, Liberty District Updated Standings, Skinny on Regular Season Races

(April 26, 2012) - Teams unbeaten in district play sit at the top of the girls lacrosse regular season standings as Woodgrove and Loudoun Valley (Dulles District), Battlefield (Cedar Run District) and Langley (Liberty District) have a shot at perfect district marks.

Dulles District
The Leaders: Woodgrove (5-0), Loudoun Valley (4-0)
The Contenders: Loudoun County (4-1)
Still Alive: Tuscarora (4-2), Briar Woods (3-2), Dominion (3-3),
Key Match-ups: Woodgrove vs. Loudoun Valley (May 4); Woodgrove vs. Loudoun County (May 7).
At Stake: Regular season title, top seed in Dulles District tournament, automatic bid and better seeding in Region II tournament as Dulles top team. 3 teams will advance to regionals.
The Skinny: Yes we know that Woodgrove beat rival Loudoun Valley 13-12 in a thrilling overtime game on April 13 so how are the Vikes still unbeaten in district? Easy, with two meetings scheduled, the first match-up between the power programs doesn't count in the district standings so the May 4 game is for keeps!

Cedar Run District
The Leader: Battlefield (6-0)
The Contenders: Freedom (4-1)
Still Alive: Broad Run (3-3)
Key Match-ups: Freedom vs. Battlefield (May 3), Freedom vs. Broad Run (May 7).
At Stake: Regular-season title, top seed and bye in Cedar Run District tournament, automatic bid and better seeding in Northwest Region tournament at Cedar Run top team. 3 teams will advance to regionals.
The Skinny: Battlefield took a huge step towards a district tile with a 15-10 win over Broad Run Wednesday, but the Bobcats still must get by Freedom on May 3.

Liberty District
The Leader: Langley (5-0)
The Contenders: Marshall (5-2), Madison (3-1)
Still Alive: Stone Bridge (3-2)
Key Match-ups: Langley vs. TJ (Apr. 27); Langley vs. South Lakes (Apr. 30).
At Stake: Top seed in the Liberty District tournament and automatic bid and better seeding into Northern Region tournament. 4 teams advance to regionals.
The Skinny: Langley can clinch the district with a win against TJ Friday. Marshall can only tie the Saxons and they lost to Langley already. Madison could, in theory, run the table and catch Langley but only if the Saxons were upset in the final 2 games.

Boys Lacrosse: Dulles, Cedar Run, Liberty District Updated Standings, Skinny on Regular Season Race

(April 26, 2012) - The boys lacrosse regular season races feature teams unbeaten in league play with Dominion and Briar Woods (Dulles District), Battlefield (Cedar Run District) and Langley (Liberty District) all at the top of the standings.

Dulles District
The Leaders: Dominion (6-0 in district), Briar Woods (5-0)
The Contenders: Loudoun County (4-1), Loudoun Valley (3-1)
Still Alive: Woodgrove (3-2)
Key Match-ups: Loudoun County vs. Briar Woods (tonight); Loudoun County vs. Dominion (Apr. 30); Briar Woods vs. Dominion (May 3); Loudoun Valley vs. Woodgrove (May 4); Briar Woods vs. Loudoun Valley (May 7);
At Stake: Regular season title, top seed in Dulles District tournament, automatic bid and better seeding in Region II tournament as Dulles top team. 3 teams will advance to regionals.
The Skinny: The district title race is shaping up for a winner-take-all game May 3 in Sterling as the Titans host Briar Woods. Loudoun County and Loudoun Valley, however, are both just a game out. The Raiders can make some noise when they travel to Briar Woods tonight and then face Dominion on Monday.

Cedar Run District
The Leader: Battlefield (5-0)
The Contenders: Stonewall Jackson (3-1), Broad Run (3-2)
Still Alive: Freedom (2-3), Osbourn (1-3)
Key Match-ups: Battlefield vs. Stonewall (tonight); Battlefield vs. Broad Run (Apr. 28); Stonewall vs. Broad Run (Apr. 30).
At Stake: Regular-season title, top seed and bye in Cedar Run District tournament, automatic bid and better seeding in Northwest Region tournament at Cedar Run top team. 3 teams will advance to regionals.
The Skinny: Battlefield went through the first round of district play unbeaten and the Bobcats can take a 2 game in lead in district play with a win tonight against Stonewall. Broad Run must be Battlefield Saturday to climb back into the race.

Liberty District
The Leader: Langley (5-0)
The Contenders: Stone Bridge (4-1), TJ (3-1)
Still Alive: South Lakes (3-2)
Key Match-ups: Langley vs. TJ (Apr. 27); Langley vs. South Lakes (Apr. 30).
At Stake: Top seed in the Liberty District tournament and automatic bid and better seeding into Northern Region tournament. 4 teams advance to regionals.
The Skinny: Langley can clinch a share of the top spot with a win against TJ Friday.

Girls Soccer: Dulles, Cedar Run, Liberty District Updated Standings, The Skinny on Regular Season Races

(April 26, 2012) - With just over two weeks left in the girls soccer high school regular season, three Loudoun teams have taken control of their districts with Woodgrove (Dulles District), Freedom (Cedar Run District) and Stone Bridge (Liberty District) a combined 26-1-5.

Dulles District
The Leader: Woodgrove (10-0-1 in district)
The Contender: Loudoun County (8-1-2)
Still Alive: Dominion (7-3-1), Briar Woods (5-2-3), Heritage (5-4-2).
Key Match-ups: Woodgrove vs. Heritage (May 1); Briar Woods vs. Loudoun County (May 8); Loudoun County vs. Dominion (May 11); Woodgrove vs. Loudoun County (May 15).
At Stake: Regular season title, top seed in Dulles District tournament, automatic bid and better seeding in Region II tournament as Dulles top team. 4 teams will advance to regionals.
The Skinny: Defending AA state Final 4 team Woodgrove has won 9 straight matches season an opening week tie with Briar Woods. Loudoun County has quietly taken control of the No. 2 spot but will need help if they are to catch the Wolverines.

Cedar Run District
The Leaders: Freedom (4-0-1 in district)
The Contenders: Broad Run (3-1-2), Battlefield (3-1-1)
Still Alive: Patriot (2-1-2)
Key Match-ups: Broad Run vs. Patriot (Apr 27); Freedom vs. Patriot (May 1); Freedom vs. Battlefield (May 4); Freedom vs. Broad Run (May 8); Patriot vs. Battlefield (May 8); Broad Run vs. Battlefield (May 11).
At Stake: Regular-season title, top seed and bye in Cedar Run District tournament, automatic bid and better seeding in Northwest Region tournament at Cedar Run top team. 3 teams will advance to regionals.
The Skinny: Freedom took over first with a win against Broad Run on Tuesday, one of the Eagles biggest wins in program history. Freedom has a one game lead on Battlefield, a team they face on the road May 4. Spartans will need to bounce back when they face a Patriot team Friday with just one defeat on the season.

Liberty District
The Leaders: Stone Bridge (4-0-0)
The Contenders: McLean (3-0-0), TJ (3-1-0)
Still Alive: Langley (1-1-0)
Key Match-ups: McLean vs. Langley (May 2); TJ vs. Langley (May 3); Stone Bridge vs. McLean (May 7); Stone Bridge vs. TJ (May 9).
At Stake: Top seed in the Liberty District tournament and automatic bid and better seeding into Northern Region tournament. 4 teams advance to regionals.
The Skinny: The district race is shaping up as a one-game showdown on May 7 between Stone Bridge and McLean but first the highlanders must face rival Langley.

Boys Soccer: Dulles, Cedar Run, Liberty Updated Standings, The Skinny on Regular Season Races

(April 26, 2012)- With about two weeks left in the boys soccer regular season all the district races are wide open with Tuscarora and Briar Woods (Dulles District), Freedom and Osbourn (Cedar Run District), and South Lakes, Stone Bridge, Langley and TJ (Liberty District) all at the top of the table.

Dulles District
The Leader: Tuscarora (8-1-2)
The Contender: Briar Woods (8-1-1)
Still Alive: Park View (6-5-0), Heritage (5-4-2), Woodgrove (5-5-1), Dominion (5-6-0), Loudoun County (4-5-2)
Key Match-ups: Briar Woods vs. Park View (May 1); Tuscarora vs. Loudoun County (May 1); Tuscarora vs. Dominion (May 4); Tuscarora vs. Woodgrove (May 8); Briar Woods vs. Loudoun County (May 8); Briar Woods vs. Heritage (May 11); Briar Woods vs. Dominion (May 15).
At Stake: Regular season title, top seed in Dulles District tournament, automatic bid and better seeding in Region II tournament as Dulles top team. 4 teams will advance to regionals.
The Skinny: Briar Woods is listed as the "contender" as they are one point behind Tuscarora but after Tuesday's 2-0 win over the Huskies, the Falcons are in control as they play one more game on the remaining schedule than Tuscarora. The rest of the teams are mathematically alive but would need an undefeated run and both leaders to severely falter to get to the top.

Cedar Run District
The Leaders: Freedom (4-1-0 in district), Osbourn (4-2-0)
The Contender: Broad Run (3-2-1)
Still Alive: Battlefield (2-2-1), Stonewall Jackson (2-3-0)
Key Match-ups: Osbourn vs. Freedom (Apr. 27); Osbourn vs. Battlefield (May 1); Freedom vs. Battlefield (May 4); Broad Run vs. Freedom (May 8); Battlefield vs. Broad Run (May 11.
At Stake: Regular-season title, top seed and bye in Cedar Run District tournament, automatic bid and better seeding in Northwest Region tournament at Cedar Run top team. 3 teams will advance to regionals.
The Skinny: Broad Run was in the leader spot until a tie with Battlefield and then a 4-2 loss Tuesday to Freedom. The Eagles suddenly find themselves in control as they have one more game to play than co-leader Osbourn. We won't have to wait long to find out which the two teams will be alone in first as they meet Friday night in South Riding.

Liberty District
The Leaders: Stone Bridge (2-0-2), South Lakes (2-0-2)
The Contenders: Langley (2-0-1), TJ (2-1-1)
Still Alive: Madison (2-2-0), McLean (1-2-0)
Key Match-ups: With five teams within a one of first place, just about every remaining Liberty District match is key!
At Stake: Top seed in the Liberty District tournament and automatic bid and better seeding into Northern Region tournament. 4 teams advance to regionals.
The Skinny: Langley, with one more game left on the schedule, than SB and SL is sitting in a nice spot. McLean could be a difference maker as the Highlanders face Stone Bridge on May 1 and then Langley the next night. South Lakes finishes the season with Langley on May 9.

Softball: Dulles, Cedar Run, Liberty District Updated Standings and The Skinny on Regular Season Races

(April 26, 2012) - The high School softball regular season is down to the late innings and Woodgrove (Dulles District), Broad Run (Cedar Run District) and Madison and Stone Bridge (Liberty District co-leaders) are in position to take a championship banner and/or top seed into their respective regional.

Dulles District

The Leader: Woodgrove (10-1 in district)
The Contenders: Loudoun County (9-2), Briar Woods (8-2)
Still Alive: Potomac Falls (6-5)
Key Match-ups: Briar Woods vs. Potomac Falls (Apr. 27), Loudoun County vs. Briar Woods (May 8); Woodgrove vs. Loudoun County (May 15).
At Stake: Regular season title, top seed in Dulles District tournament, automatic bid and better seeding in Region II tournament as Dulles top team. 4 teams will advance to regionals.
The Skinny: Woodgrove took a one-game lead in district with last week's win at Briar Woods, avenging their lone loss on the season. Last year the district's top seed came down to the final night of play and that could happen again with the Wolverines facing current second place LC on the final night.

Cedar Run District
The Leader: Broad Run (5-0 in district)
The Contenders: Battlefield (3-2), Osbourn (3-2)
Still Alive: Patriot (2-3), Stonewall Jackson (2-3)
Key Match-ups: Battlefield vs. Osbourn (May 1), Broad Run vs. Osbourn (May 3), Broad Run vs. Battlefield (May 11).
At Stake: Regular-season title, top seed and bye in Cedar Run District tournament, automatic bid and better seeding in Northwest Region tournament at Cedar Run top team. 3 teams will advance to regionals.
The Skinny: With five games remaining, the Spartans 2-game lead looks huge as they can split with Battlefield and Osbourn and still take the title. Stonewall may be the wild card in the race.

Liberty District
The Leader: Stone Bridge (8-1), Madison (8-1)
The Contender: McLean (6-2)
Still Alive: Langley (5-4)
Key Match-ups: Stone Bridge vs. Madison (April 27); Stone Bridge vs. Langley (May 1); Langley vs. Madison (May 4); McLean vs. Madison (May 8); McLean vs. Langley (May 11)
At Stake: Top seed in the Liberty District tournament and automatic bid and better seeding into Northern Region tournament. 4 teams advance to regionals.
The Skinny: Stone Bridge and Madison will slug it out in Ashburn Friday for sole possession of first place. McLean, which beat SB Tuesday, is just a game back in the loss column with match-ups against Madison and Langley still left.

Baseball: Dulles, Cedar Run, Liberty Updated Standings and The Skinny on Regular-Season Title Races

(April 26, 2012) - The high school baseball regular season is entering its (seventh inning) stretch drive and Potomac Falls (Dulles District), Patriot (Cedar Run District) and Stone Bridge (Liberty District) are the teams in position to capture regular-season titles and/or top seeds heading into postseason.

Dulles District
The Leader: Potomac Falls (10-1 in district)
The Contenders: Woodgrove (9-2), Loudoun Valley (8-2)
Still Alive: Heritage (7-4)
Key Match-ups: Loudoun Valley vs. Woodgrove (April 27); Potomac Falls vs. Loudoun Valley (May 1); Heritage vs. Woodgrove (May 1); Potomac Falls vs. Heritage (May 4); Loudoun Valley vs. Heritage (May 8).
At Stake: Regular season title, top seed in Dulles District tournament, automatic bid and better seeding in Region II tournament as Dulles top team. 4 teams will advance to regionals.
The Skinny: Potomac Falls took sole possession of first place with its win Tuesday at Woodgrove. The Panthers bats have been hot but the winner of Friday's Woodgrove vs. Loudoun Valley games Friday will be just one game back of Potomac Falls. A Loudoun Valley win Friday would set up a battle for first place on May 1 when the Vikes play the Panthers. At the bottom, Park View (1-8) and Dominion (1-10) are fighting for the Dulles tournament's final playoff spot. Heritage is close to wrapping up a home date in district tournament quarterfinals.

Cedar Run District
The Leader: Patriot (4-1 in district)
The Contenders: Freedom (3-2), Osbourn (3-2)
Still Alive: Battlefield (2-3), Broad Run (2-3), Stonewall Jackson (1-4)
Key Match-ups: All of them in this 6-team district! Freedom and Osbourn will be rooting for Broad Run when the Spartans host Patriot Friday. Freedom then travels to Patriot on May 1.
At Stake: Regular-season title, top seed and bye in Cedar Run District tournament, automatic bid and better seeding in Northwest Region tournament at Cedar Run top team. 3 teams will advance to regionals.
The Skinny: The race in this small district could change dramatically each night but kudos to first-year Patriot for being in the driver's seat at the midway point in the 10-game district slate.

Liberty District
The Leader: Stone Bridge (8-1)
The Contenders: McLean (7-2), Langley (6-3)
Still Alive: Madison (5-4), Marshall (5-4)
Key Match-ups: Stone Bridge vs. Madison (April 27); McLean vs. Marshall (April 27); Stone Bridge vs. Langley (May 1); Langley vs. Madison (May 4); Stone Bridge vs. Marshall (May 8); McLean vs. Madison (May 8); McLean vs. Langley (May 11)
At Stake: Top seed in the Liberty District tournament and automatic bid and better seeding into Northern Region tournament. 4 teams advance to regionals.
The Skinny: Stone Bridge took over sole possession of first place with a big 9-1 win over McLean on Tuesday. The Bulldogs have been on a roll, winning five straight by a combined score of 41-2! Stone Bridge and McLean split their two meetings so the Highlanders need another team to knock off SB to climb back into a tie for first.

Baseball: Potomac Falls, behind Tenacious Rogers, Rallies for 6-4 Win at Woodgrove to Take Control of Dulles

By Dan Sousa
Viva Loudoun Editor

Purcellville (April 25, 2012) - Potomac Falls High School senior right-hander Jackson Rogers is a bulldog on the mound and once he sinks his teeth into a lead, don't even think about prying it from him.

Such was the case Tuesday in a Dulles District showdown among the league co-leaders as Potomac Falls (10-1 in district, 13-2 overall) erased deficits of 3-0 and 4-2 at Woodgrove (9-2, 12-3) with two runs in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth to take a 5-4 advantage.

Potomac Falls SR Jackson Rogers finished with 12 strikeouts, no walks in win.
Rogers, Region II Player of the Year last year as well as first team AA all-state, allowed just one Wolverine on base in the final three innings as he finished the game with a flourish, registering seven of his 12 strikeouts including seven straight at one point. Junior Brandon Orbe's solo home run in the top of seventh inning provided the final 6-4 margin as the Panthers won their 11th straight game and took a 1-game lead in the regular-season district race.
