Softball: Loudoun Valley Senior Richardson Battles Back After Chronic Migraines Sideline Her Junior Year

Loudoun Valley senior softball player Kelsey Richardson talks about her comeback attempt after medical issues sidelined her entire junior year

(Dec. 31, 2011) - Loudoun Valley High School pitcher Kelsey Richardson had gotten headaches before so when she developed a migraine on the bus ride her sophomore season to the VHSL state quarterfinal softball game at James Madison High School in Vienna she didn't think twice about it. Only this time, the headache didn't go away. It didn't get better. In fact it got worse and essentially turned into a debilitating 18-month fight against her toughest foe yet: chronic daily migraines.

The soft-spoken Richardson, not only couldn't play softball after that June day in 2010 but she basically missed her entire junior school year at Loudoun Valley as the migraines forced her to be homebound for her studies as the light and noise of school was too much with her painful condition.

"The next few days after that game I woke up and still had the headache ... and there was no cure for it all," said Richardson. "I was sensitive to lights, sounds, smells ... I had to lay in the dark and nothing really makes me feel better.

In addition to the migraines, Richardson also has an aneurysm in her cerebral artery that doctors are monitoring. The good news is that Richardson is back at school for her senior year and determined to make it back into the Viking softball squad. She reached a milestone this fall when she pitched in a travel softball game, facing hitters for the first time since that state quarterfinal playoff game.

Boys Basketball: Tis the Season for Milestones! Park View's Ryan McCarter Breaks Billy King's 28-Year-old Scoring Mark; LC's Anderson, LV's Yoxthimer, PF's Graves, WG's Gilson Achieve Records

Ryan McCarter
(Dec. 22, 2011) - The snow may not be falling in this balmiest of winter's but the boys basketball records are dropping nightly in a milestone opening to the season with Park View High School senior Ryan McCarter breaking Billy King's 28-year-old school single game scoring mark with 44 points Wednesday in the Patriots 99-70 win at Dominion.

Also on Wednesday, Potomac Falls senior Greg Graves reached the 1,000-point career scoring mark as he scored 32 points with 15 rebounds as the Panthers finished on a 15-0 run to beat Broad Run, 66-53. Graves has an amazing 700 career rebounds as well!

McCarter's record-breaking and Graves' milestone are not alone as Loudoun County junior Michael Anderson set the Raiders single-game scoring record on Monday night with 43 points in a 76-65 win over Park View. And earlier in the season, Loudoun Valley senior John Yoxthimer broke a Viking school mark that had stood since the 1970s as he moved past Charles Warner career rebounding total of 457. Yoxthimer is also money to break the 1,000-point scoring mark this season.

And in the 1,000-point scoring milestone, Woodgrove coach Steve Douglas reports that Brad Gilson broke that milestone last week in a game against Heritage when Gilson's point totals from his freshman season are figured in with his sophomore year at Loudoun Valley and the past two seasons with new Woodgrove.

News: Wrestle for the Cure to Benefit The Cooley Foundation; Battle Between Briar Woods, Broad Run, Freedom and Stone Bridge

 Special to VivaLoudoun
(Dec. 21, 2011) - Broad Run High School will host the first ever Honda of Dulles Ashburn Duals on Jan. 25 and the varsity wrestling meet, which features the Spartans along with rivals Briar Woods, Freedom and Stone Bridge, will be a "Wrestle for the Cure" event to raise cancer awareness with proceeds going to The Cooley Foundation.

The Cooley Foundation was created by Washington Redskins tight end and former high school wrestler Chris Cooley in honor of his mother, Nancy Cooley, a teacher at Briar Woods, and her fight against breast cancer.

Wrestlers from each team will sport pink shoes laces, sponsored by Reliv, and pink socks, sponsored by Northern VA Homes, with the irregular team uniforms to show their support
for the cause. All proceeds raised on the night from various sponsorships and fundraisers during the matches will be donated directly to The Chris Cooley Foundation to help fight breast cancer and raise awareness.

According to Broad Run coach J.J. Totaro: "The coaches have worked together extremely hard on this to make it a great event not only for the sport, but for cancer awareness as well. Our goal is to get 1,000 spectators to come and support this event."

A lofty goal indeed, but through combined work of the coaching staffs and their wrestlers, they
have been able to set up what could be one of the biggest wrestling events in the county this year.

Play forthe Cure events have been huge for raising awareness for cancer through football, soccer and other sports, but there have been very few, if any, in the sport of wrestling. This event looks to start a tradition of support for cancer awareness through the sport of wrestling.

Football: You Pick'Em Final Results - King James Wins It as Roger James (Spartan of Ashburn) Takes the Top Prize; WashPost's Matt Brooks Wins LoCo Media Title

(Dec. 15, 2011) - In the end, King James is the royalty of You Pick'Em as Roger James (aka The Spartan of Ashburn) went 3-3 in the final week to take the top prize in our football picks contest with an amazing 103-19 overall record. James, one of the Chain Gang at Broad Run High School, wins $100 for himself and $100 to the Spartans athletic program!

Runner-up with a 102-20 record was Jane Baker of Ashburn (aka Jungle Jane), who takes home $50, and in third place with a 100-22 record was none other than Potomac Falls High School boys basketball coach Jeff Hawes (aka Big Daddy of Leesburg), who receives $25. Hawes was one of only six fans to go 4-2 on the week and won the t-shirt as he took the tiebreaker, picking Briar Woods 31-21 over Christiansburg when the final was 28-26.

In the LoCo media (they are crazy, you know ...) race, Matt Brooks of the Washington Post went 5-1 on the week to break a 3-way tie at the top. Brooks finished 102-20 for the year and he will have $100 in his name given to the charity of his choice ... which is SOME (So Others Might Eat), an interfaith, community-based organization that exists to help the poor and homeless of our nation's capital.

Andy Hayes of Gameday went with his heart and finished 3-3 in the final week as Centreville and South County both lost in the state finals. He finishes at 100-22. Carl Lukat of the Loudoun Times-Mirror went 2-4 to fall to third and finish at 99-23. And we have to give a shout out to Dave Scarangella of Dulles District who was the ONLY picker among media and fans to get all six state title games right ... we assume he bought a lottery ticket over the weekend as well!

Finally, please thank Gayle King of Century 21 Redwood Realty for sponsoring the contest and her financial support allows us to pay out the winners ... so give her a shout the next time you see her!
