News: VHSL Initial Proposal Alignment Plan for 2013-14, 2014-15 Moves Briar Woods, Potomac Falls, Tuscarora, Woodgrove All up to AAA
(Nov. 30, 2011) - In the next two-year alignment plan proposed by the Virginia High School League, Loudoun will have more AAA schools (seven) than AA schools (six) with Briar Woods, Potomac Falls, Tuscarora, Woodgrove slotted to move up from AA to join current AAA schools Broad Run, Freedom and Stone Bridge. The proposal, which will be approved in the spring after debate and appeals, covers the 2013-14 and 2014-15 school years.
A proposed Cedar Run District in the Northwest Region would have six Loudoun schools -- Briar Woods, Broad Run, Freedom, Potomac Falls, Tuscarora, Woodgrove -- joining Sherando. Current Cedar Run schools Battlefield, Osbourn, Patriot and Stonewall Jackson would shift to the Cardinal District.
Stone Bridge would remain in the Liberty District in the Northern Region though there may be a push for some in Loudoun to get the Bulldogs into the Cedar Run District, which would give that district 8 teams, and create some tremendous local district rivalries with Broad Run, Briar Woods and Stone Bridge all based near each other in Ashburn.
The proposed slimmed down Dulles District, currently nine teams, would have six schools with John Champe High School, opening in the South Riding/Stone Hill area next year, joining Dominion, Heritage, Loudoun County, Loudoun Valley and Park View in an all-Loudoun AA district.

By Dan Sousa
VivaLoudoun Editor
Ashburn (Nov. 25, 2011) - A stifling Briar Woods High School defense, highlighted by a fourth quarter Red Zone stand that protected a 7-point lead, led the Falcons to a 21-7 win over Powhatan Friday evening in the Region II Division 4 football title game. For the defending state champion Falcons it was a 12th straight win and back-to-back regional titles.
"Championships are based on defense," Briar Woods coach Charlie Pierce told his players as they gathered after the regional title win.
Briar Woods (12-1) travels Saturday to face Region I champion Grafton in the state semifinals. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at York High School's Bailey Field.
"Let's keep it rolling!," said Briar Woods senior Alex Carter who had a key catch on the Falcons' go-ahead touchdown drive just before the end of the first half and had the game-clinching long TD run in the fourth quarter.

News: Body of Ashburn Father of Four Recovered After Canoe Accident; 7-Year-old Son Rescued by Local Teens
(Nov. 28, 2011) - The Ashburn community is rallying around Tony DiGiovanna's family Monday after the 49-year-old father of four reportedly drowned in a canoe accident on the Beaverdam Creek Reservoir Sunday afternoon. His 7-year-old son was rescued by bystanders who jumped into the cold water after the family's canoe capsized.
Family friend Tom DeMay posted on Facebook around 1:30 p.m. that DiGiovanna's body had been found by rescue workers around noon Monday. Authorities in Loudoun are now officially identifying DiGiovanna as the victim of the accident and confirming the recovery of the body.
Two of the rescuers who jumped in the water to help the son to safety have been identified as George Lewis, a senior at Briar Woods High School, and Brad Odenheimer, a senior at Stone Bridge High School.
Lewis poignantly posted on Facebook after the rescue: "Just helplessly witnessed a man lose his life and a ... boy lose his father. This is the most terrible thing I have ever seen or been through, to hear a man's last words before he sinks beneath the water in front of his own child."
On DiGiovanna's Facebook page, tributes were already pouring in for the popular father, coach, musician, and pilot among other things. Wrote one friend:
"R.I. P. My dear friend You will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing you. My thoughts and prayers are with your family. So long Twon, may your spirit soar above the clouds where you enjoyed being so much. you were A Great friend, A Super husband and father, An incredible pilot, Smokin guitar player A great man. love you and miss you always Twon"
Family friend Tom DeMay posted this detailed update prior to that:
"Here's what I know. Tony DiGiovanna, his son ... and his dog were canoeing at Goose Creek Reservoir and the boat capsized. (The son) had a life vest, Tony did not. Some bystanders ... were on the shore and tried to get out to help. They helped (the son) to safety. Somehow, the dog made it too. But Tony did not make it back.
